X-plane me "Spring Awakening"

I don't get the praise, hosannah's, hooplah. There must be some rules about musical pop songs (yes, I get that they function within a larger plot and may have to express more direct lines,) but Spring Awakening, to me, is just Duncan Sheik with different singers. Can someone clarify? Has someone seen it? (I searched the ILM archives, nothing, so apologies before hand.)

yeah I saw it a couple weeks ago (got the tickets as a brithday present)and I thought the songs were good in theatre context, advancing the plot while sounding in theory anyway like actual free-standing rock songs for the most part. haven't listened to the soundtrack album yet, but my wife did and enjoyed it. also I'm totally unfamiliar w/Duncan Sheik's work so I can't comment. Worth noting that Sheik wrote the music and somebody else did lyrics.

it wasn't the best musical I've seen, that would be the recent revival of Sweeney Todd, and for that matter I'm more of a rock guy than a theatre uh person. so I can't really explain why I liked Spring Awakening so much but I did.

the best musical ever is You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, for real.

Best musical evah thread to the thread!

So that may explain why listening to Spring Awakening ain't doin' much for me. Was the storyline good? It's just gotten such raves from ppl and critics I thought it'd be more interesting.

one year passes...

Spring Awakening was amazing.

The music isn't really 'rock' per se and at times is a little predictable but I really like it. especially "The Word of Your Body".

I saw this. The word "bathos" comes to mind. But I did think the pit band was good and I enjoyed them in a nerdy musician way.

Emm...that's probably the worst criticism I've ever seen of the show, but hey, whatever floats your boat! :)

The book (based on Franz Wedekind's 19th century play) is loads more intelligent than the majority of theatre out there right now.

The music is supposed to be the antithesis, the raw emotion of each one of the characters. The lyrics are somewhat simple (at times they are admittedly cheesy), the music emotive, sometimes cliched, and not really rocking, but it works.

It's basically what Rent could have been if Rent had a brain (not saying I dislike REnt but...no comparison!).
