Anyone else see Rhys Chatham play last night?

Wow! The difference between hearing his music on record and being directly in front of a dozen or however many guitars playing it is unreal...seeing Sonic Youth up there as yeomen strummers bangin away on a single note for fifteen minutes was pretty cool too

Has anyone heard the new album? Is it worth getting (or does it have to be seen live)?

I saw him in Buffalo Thursday night. It was a different group than the NYC ensemble (6 guitarists, at least some local, including Tony Conrad). It was pretty good, though it seemed to end a little soon. It was actually pretty rocking, with a strong beat. (No one else really seemed to be dancing though.)

I bought A Crimson Grail. (That's the newest, right?) I listened to it once. I think it's great. It's a very good recording, given the size of the ensemble. It's quite different from the set they played, more symphonic, less rock. It starts with lush, almost uplifting guitar washes without percussion and has a more dramatic Branca-esque second movement.

(There's a third movement too, I just didn't comment on it.)

I did. I had to listen from the periphery as the park at Lincoln Center was pretty crowded by the time I arrived (like 5 mins. into the piece). Sound was still clear from where I stood and I def. stood for the entire thing. Really jaw droppingly gorgeous in parts - most subtle yet massive layers of chords droning and building over each other. The second part of CG reminded me of the Ligeti piece used in the Monolith scene in 2001:A Space Odyssey - instead of human voices think guitars. I can't really do it justice since I'm not a writer but it was seriously a gorgeous sounding work.
