Mariah. Even still, today, Mariah.

Mariah, indeed. Augilerie sounds like she's singing through a megahorn.

Err, megaphone.

The Reverend Rodney J. Greene in a DIE BLIPSTER SCUM! tee (R. J. Greene), Monday, 29 January 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

kindof a megahorn

altho with christina, it's like you gotta love her for tryin

surmounter (rra123), Monday, 29 January 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

mariah, which isn't to say that i don't prefer xtina's songs (and indeed mariah's songs now)

What?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 29 January 2007 10:12 (eighteen years ago)

lol... i know lex i think we need a little clarification on that one

christina really does sound like she's singing through a megahorn, but she also has that kind of voice that if you're in the right mood can sound fantastic

then again, when doesn't mariah sound fantastic? although sometimes she uses too much head voice

surmounter (rra123), Monday, 29 January 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Christina's been growing. musically that is

the Dirt (FunkDirt), Monday, 29 January 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

eight months pass...

mariah still

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

Yes indeed.

matt2, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

then again, when doesn't mariah sound fantastic?

When she goes from whispery to loud to whispery to loud in the same sentence/word/syllable even. Can't stand it.

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

Old Mariah had a lighter tone than Xtina, which is where the "trying too hard" comments against Xtina are coming from. Both of them were/are ridiculously talented.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

Nope, Aguilera.

Acrobatics are one thing, and they can both do them. Singing like you're not an emotionless robot is quite another, and Christina's got this in spades.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

Vision Of Love is good.

blueski, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno about this emotionless claim about mariah -- random to me. i fuckin hear emotion.

aguilera needs to learn to use some head voice sometimes. she's all chest.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

Random? This is a very common criticism of her singing.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

Aguilera isn't all chest, actually.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

chest VOICE (tho the former stands too)

HI DERE, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

i know, it is a common criticism! whch i didn't realize until i was reading her wiki recently... but it's random to me

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno sometimes i wish i could hear more falsetto from christina. sometimes she belts too much for me.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

She still can, and hasn't gone through an extended period of having to sing whisper-voice-style like Mariah has been doing for what, seven years?

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

i know sometimes it's bizarre how much mariah sports that. she's heralded for her voice but she's really done the whisper thing for a while now.

i gotta say tho, it sounds good to me.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

Buy one Isobel Campbell album, you'll be in heaven.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

Mariah's whisper-voice has this harsh, grating edge on it that makes it nigh-unlistenable for me.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

thanks for the recommendation!

i just love that she gets away with the whisper, and scores hits with it!

mariah's whisper vs. janet's whisper

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

Well, Mariah's.

Although I realize we are talking about EARLY Mariah here, so the whispering thing isn't AS relevant.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

it's true. EARLY mariah navigates her head voice with her chest voice really, really beautifully. she even pulls of this slightly whispery feel with her alto voice that is SO PRETTY.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

I almost never hear her using her "head voice" in her early stuff. She is as shouty as anything. Now she is all head voice, of course, because she can no longer belt anything, from abusing her chest voice!

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

haha.

no she DOES use it early on tho, just on very few tracks. but for instance the Music Box single, is mariah's head voice at its BESTTTTT. so fucking beautiful.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

okay so i'm listening to Shake It Off (of course), and mariah's voice is INTENSELY WHISPERY on this track, but i FUCKING LOVE IT LIKE THIN SPAGHETTI WITH MEATBALLS

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

thin is right

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

hahahahahahahahahahaha

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

it's funny how MUCH they work with her breathy voice. i mean the production TOTALLY embraces it. especially during those sections where they use her breathiness as a lush backdrop for the melody (like she'll just be singing "aaaahhhhh" behind the words" -- it's so crackly, i love it - it's like an airy synth pad)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

Mariah. All Mariah. I hate Aguilera, I find her voice really annoying and it pisses me off whenever I see her. It might be irrational, but it just is.

I know, right?, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

Mariah's falsetto really makes me want to tear off my ears.

I wish Christina would back off the chest voice.

As much as I like Christina I gotta go with Mariah on this.
