1994: jungle surely?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

yeh definitely. 1994 was a strong year for music as is documented ona lot of other threads and "Music For A Jilted Generation", "Snivilisation" etc kind of defined it for me in a way, but I'd definitely go for Jungle in 94.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

doglatin you are basing the list on personal experience too much, or just whether you can remember thre or more top ten hits from the Summer of that year that all had the same vibe.

the whole match styles to years thing NEVER works.

vita susicivus (blueski), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

or rather you will never be able to establish consensus on it.

vita susicivus (blueski), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not saying there will be one all-encompassing genre for each year. same as everyone has different ideas about what their favourite band or album might be. yes the list is based on personal experience as that's all i have to draw on. The point of this thread is to do, as Tuomas did and suggest other things. I don't see what the problem is with that.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

if we could all establish consensus on everything there wouldn't be a discussion board here would therE?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

vita susicivus (blueski), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

i'd have expected that was a given. Unless you want to go through 7 years worth of threads changing every "Dubstar C/D" to "Do you think that Dubstar is classic or dud?".

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 29 January 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

well for starters, we've had more responses regarding the worthiness of the thread versus actual answers. your question isn't a very good one, mostly because you can't really reduce an entire year down to one genre.

also, you, who started the thread, answred your own question about halfway in.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 29 January 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

Charlie, it's because the thread is ridiculous. There is no definitive style or genre for any year ever.

1972 was the year of Desert Rock, as evidenced by these 1972 releases:

Steely Dan, "Do It Again": "In the morning you go gunning for the man who stole your water"

Blue Oyster Cult, "Then Came The Last Days Of May": "Parched land on desert sand, sun's just a dot"

America, "Horse With No Name": "I've been through the desert on a horse with no name"

Jethro Tull, "Living In The Past": "Happy and I'm smiling, walk a mile to drink your water"

Scorpions, "I'm Goin' Mad": "Walking through the desert"

Randy Newman, "God's Song": "The humblest yucca tree he chases round this desert"

Roxy Music, "Virginia Plain": "Someplace near the desert strand"

Captain Beefheart, "My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains": "Water deserts with my eyes until I find you"

Eagles, "Peaceful Easy Feeling": "I want to sleep with you in the desert tonight"

Jackson Browne, "Child In These Hills": "I am a child in these hills, and looking for water, and looking for life"

In addition, there's McCoy Tyner's Sahara. And the cover of this Santana record speaks for itself:
