Beyond Max Roach, Art Blakey & Jack DeJohnette I am so so lost. I realize this is a broad category, maybe narrowing it down to recs w/drums as bandleaders would help. Please to educate Hoosteen?

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

Drummers as leaders is a tough one. Generally speaking, my favorite badasses were playing behind other badasses. Ronald Shannon Jackson's made some great records as leader, though, and so has Paul Motian. But damn, just in general?

Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Dannie Richmond, Ed Blackwell, Andrew Cyrille, Pheeroan AkLaff, Steve McCall, Gene Lake, Han Bennink, Susie Ybarra...

Candy: tastes like chicken, if chicken was a candy. (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

Denardo Coleman (yes, even at 12)...

Saxby D. Elder (Saxby D. Elder), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 04:24 (eighteen years ago)

I'm also all about free jazz drummers!

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

Leon Parker and Brian Blades have both done interesting things.

Jubalique (Jubalique), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

so jazz drummers then? today, you can run out and see: joey baron, david king, jim black, bobby previte, tom rainey, kenny wolleson, ben perowsky

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

Scott Amendola was AMAZING when I saw the Nels Cline Singers.

do i have to draw you a diaphragm (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 04:53 (eighteen years ago)

Billy Cobham. He could be a wanker, but his work with Miles is really thrilling. Rhino put out a good compilation a few years back.

Also: ROY HAYNES

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 05:15 (eighteen years ago)

I generally avoid drummer-bandleader records other than Max Roach, Tony Williams, Art Blakey of course, and maybe a couple of others I'm forgetting. I think I remember some of Art Taylor's Wailers stuff being good but I don't have any.

A few records off the top of my head where I especially love the drumming:

Miles Davis - Milestones (Philly Joe Jones)
Chick Corea - Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (Roy Haynes)
Monk's Music (Art Blakey)
All of the Ornette Coleman records with Ed Blackwell and/or Billy Higgins
Max Roach - Drums Unlimited
Pretty much any sixties Miles record with Tony Williams - actually pretty much anything with Tony Williams
Chris Lightcap's recent quartet stuff with Gerald Cleaver
Albert Ayler - Spiritual Unity (Sunny Murray)
All the classic coltrane stuff with Elvin, obv.
McCoy Tyner - Inception (also Elvin)

Check out Idris Muhammad's two first albums as a leader, Black Rhythm Revolution and Rhythm and Soul (available on one CD), they're underrated gems with both soulful and experimental tunes. Muhammad's later albums are more fusion, but definitely worth checking out if that's your thing, escpecially House of the Rising Sun.

On the fusion tip, you might enjoy Billy Cobham and Alphonse Mouzon, though they can get quite wanky, as mentioned. Still, Cobham's Spectrum is an essential fusion album and A Funky Thide of Sings is a fun little jazz-funk LP. Harvey Mason is also an essential fusion drummer, check out Sunburst by Eddie Henderson for example.

The recommendations on Elvin Jones and Roy Haynes seconded. If you're willing to expand to percussionists, Airto Moreira is always worth a listen.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 09:23 (eighteen years ago)

Tony Oxley, Hamid Drake

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 09:49 (eighteen years ago)

In case the image upthread ends up broken — Milford Graves.

I'd add William Hooker, and, for drummers-as-leaders, Tony Williams gets less love than he should for Life Time and Spring, his Blue Note disques from his teenage years. Had they been released on ESP-Disk or Savoy or Impulse, they'd be thought of as free-jazz classix.

mark 0 (mark 0), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

Spring heartily seconded.

Not bandleaderz per se but don't forget:

Philly Jo Jones and Kenny Clarke on the bop, Andrew Cyrille on the avant tip and Dannie Richmond in the Mingus band.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

joey baron, chris corsano.

Fuck, everyone OTM.

for drummers-as-leaders, Tony Williams gets less love than he should for Life Time and Spring

Yeah, I agree -- both great records.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

lovebug otm on all counts

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

Sting vs. Miles

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

oops. sorry, wrong thread.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Everybody already mentioned seconded! (Esp. Elvin & Tony, whom Austin wasted no time in mentioning.) And I'll add Rashied Ali to the mix.

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

I love young jazz drummers.

Ben Perowsky seconded, esp. his s/t trio record (i.e. Sascha Baron Cohen's jukebox pick in Talladega Nights)

Dave King (Happy Apple, Bad Plus)

Ari Hoenig, he is the sickest, but I'm not that into his main gigs (Jean Michel-Pilc and the Jazz Mandolin Project?)

Bill Stewart (w/Larry Goldings & John Scofield)

Shannon Powell & Herlin Riley, the New Orleans dudes

Brian Blade, both of the Fellowship records are fantastic

Ted Sirota, Chicago dude, his last record is great (and has some for-real dub, afrobeat, etc. tunes in addition to the jass)

I could go on.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I do feel like there's a bumper crop of good young jazz drummers right now - drums are the new tenor sax, but in a good way.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

Kahil El'Zabar (OMG first to say this?)
Satoshi Takeishi (great alone or with amazing bassist brother Stomu)
Olivier Le Goas (up and coming French dude, really tears it up sometimes)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

I'd be interested what people think about PRE WW2 drummers, too. Who do you think is great?

All of Steve Reid's albums as leader are great great great, ditto his duet albums with Kieran Hebden from last year, which were innovative in a way that was long overdue and well worth the wait

You want young guys?

Jeff Ballard
Gene Jackson
Tony Jefferson
Billy Kilson

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

What about your boy Junior -- I just realized the other day he lives around the corner from me.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

He's a friend, I gotta exercise restraint in posting his name, the same way I might not post your name on a Great Unsigned Alt-Country Drummers thread, Hurting. You should see if you can get invited to one of his parties.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

Paal Nilssen-Love, Done a couple records as leader also plays w/ Vandermark, Gustafsson, Parker, Atomic, The Thing, etc. Great drummer.

chris besinger (chris besinger), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

xpost Understood, hence I did not mention by name.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Since I'm listening to the new "Mahavishnu Project" thing right now, it seems ridiculous not to mention Gregg Bendian. Hoost, I think you need to go to the Fine Arts library and get "Interstellar Space Revisited" RIGHT NOW.

Candy: tastes like chicken, if chicken was a candy. (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

One guy I haven't heard a lot of talk about, despite his relatively high profile, is Jorge Rossy, previously of the Brad Mehldau Trio. Really unique approach I think -- accents in all kinds of strange places, lots of interesting cymbal work, generally very unpredictable.

Tyrone Quattlebaum (Hurting 2), Friday, 31 October 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

he's obviously great but he was kind of transparent in the mehldau trio, you know? i haven't heard too much of his other work, but i'd like to hear him in a situation where he can use sticks more and maybe have some more space.

Jordan, Friday, 31 October 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I know what you mean. It was only when I saw him live that I came to appreciate him, partly just in a "Whoa, wtf is he doing?" way. I think the trio was a lot more interesting with him than it is with Jeff Ballard, although he's great too.

Don't really know what Rossy is doing now.

Tyrone Quattlebaum (Hurting 2), Friday, 31 October 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

Jordan, Friday, 31 October 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

three weeks pass...

RIP Tony Reedus.
