I don't give a toss about this place anymore. Goodbye.

That's enough trolling, WL. Do your homework before starting such threads in future.

Perhaps I should start one about Minimal House featuring Des O'Connor and Joe Dolan.

you're obsessed with fitting things into categories, doglatin. but then i was too.

-- vita susicivus (n...), January 30th, 2007 2:33 PM. (blueski)

Errr... What about all the people going "Oooh, Dog Latin you are so dumb, you can't tell the difference between Electrohouse and Minimal House, FNARR FNARRR FNARRR!" or "How dare you say XTC are included in the genre 80s synth pop when it is clear to anyone that they didn't use synths? How can you say that they sound like Tears For Fears and Talk Talk when those bands have nothing to do with each other?*".

WHEN DID ILX BECOME SUCH A FUCKING NERD-FEST? GET ONE LIFE AND STOP PICKING APART EVERY SINGLE WORD I SAY AND GET BACK TO ENJOYING MUSIC!

I say this as someone who has been a regular here since 1999. ILX was never like this before. We used to help each other out with music queries, not fight endlessly over whether a thread is titled correctly or if a certain choice of wording was more or less appropriate to another. We didn't used to fob off noobs with sarcasm and oh-so-funny joke responses. We also didn't used to slag each other off day-upon-day and thread-to-thread for the odd bit of misguidedness in music.

The reason I come here is to learn more about music and to discuss different opinions.

I don't come here to act like a wanker and unnecessarily quote people unnecessarily quote people unnecessarily quote people unnecessarily quote people unnecessarily quote people unnecessarily quote people unnecessarily quote people unnecessarily quote people unnecessarily quote people without actually giving a proper response (the most cowardly habit that's been developing of late on this board, along with simply writing "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" underneath what someone has written).

People like Dom, Ethan and Mr. Que go round taking the piss out of other people and complaining about things like "list threads"** without actually writing anything worthwhile themselves. I may not always be right about every single fact but at least I try and contribute worthwhile posts which is more than can be said than for people like them. They feel that because they've been here for a certain amount of time they can swan about with this holier than thou attitude, taking the piss out of peoples posts while contributing nothing to encourage music discussion.

People like this are smothering ILX and frightening off other posters, some who only turned up for a short while (Charlie Howard to name but one, and I'm surprised Louis Jagger is still here after the way he's been treated) and others who have been here for ages (haven't seen G-Kit for a while have we?).

I'm probably opening myself wide to more harassment from these cunts but frankly I'm beyond caring and I know there are other people on this board who are also fed up to the back teeth with this bullshit. There's only one word for it and it's trolling and if most of these people hadn't once been decent contributors to this board they'd have been banned fucking ages ago in the same way Callum and that lot were.

* As was pointed out on the thread in question, XTC and Tears For Fears were often compared to each other in the late 80s, synth pop or no.

**A list thread is only a list thread if you make it a list thread. If you don't like writing lists, how about contributing something useful and objective to one of these instead of moaning about them? My thread about definitive genres was called a "list thread" but that wasn't the intention at all. Besides, in many cases a list thread can be informative to people who want to know more about a particular kind of music or artist.

DL, it won't help change the situation but it would probably be easier to deal with the change in tone if you mentally insert "haha wankers!" after every ILM post you read; I find that doing so makes the whole board a lot more fun to read.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

the problem is as much questions like 'what are some tracks like these?' or 'what songs fit into this category' because they do encourage just list-making and pedantic queries over accuracy. it's up to you to phrase your questions and explanations within in a way that encourages better responses. not much sympathy if you can't do this.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

and we all know the facts are an important part of enjoying music. i like the critic/actual listener divide on here. there are people who desperately want some sort of psychosociopoliterate kind of kudos from somewhere and then the dudes who just turn up and kind of wanna hear some new stuff.

george bob (george bob), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

the 'hostility to newcomers' thing also depends much on the attitude (or naivety) of said newcomers, plus everyone was a newcomer at some point. remind yourself what the differences are between ILM and other music msg boards - it's probably still MORE tolerant yet more...intelligent at the same time (i'm talking total archive rather than going by current mood). there are still lots of things wrong about ILM but it's always been pretty hegmonic and favouritist. i am unapologetic elitist, if you can't take the anagram of heat etc.

vita susicivus (blueski), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Ive only been reading for a year. Its a nice board. A good mix of knowledge and bullshit. You read what you want, answer what you want, start the threads you want. Theres obviously room for everything. But bullying belongs in the schoolyard, where there are fat nerds who really needs a bashing to stop beeing ugly, but here were all adults.

Erm, to be fair Doglatin, ILX has been EXACTLY like you complain it now is for about five years. Maybe you hadn't noticed before because you hadn't been on the receiving end but I don't know.

Also DL I think the minimal/electrohouse thing has kind of reached a head because you went through a phase of going onto every other dance thread and going "why don't I like this music? I just can't see it working in a club" and then seeing it derailed into a lengthy discussion on same. Surely you can see this would be annoying to people who are really into the scene and actually want to discuss the records themselves without it going all "why why why". And why this might make people a bit cranky with you after the nth time?

ILX was never like this before. We used to...

'used to' are such useless words! I wasn't around when ILX started, but the thread revives I've seen from ILX: The Golden Age aren't all sincere and friendly adults sharing their information with comradely joy, and frankly going "the past was so much better why can't we go back there why can't we why can't we" is whiny and futile. It's a very common thing, to romanticise the past, but it's the equivalent of daydreaming about winning a million pounds and then complaining that it's not in your real bank account. Could it not be 'plz to make ilm nicer' that people ask for, rather than 'plz to return to fantasy world past where there were only ten people on ilx and they all liked each other and were intellectual heavyweights with a fine and witty turn of phrase'?

ampersand, spades, semicolon (cis), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)
