Erasing Wikipedia Entries Fans Set Up for Your Band, C/D

I've set up entries for a particular favorite noise band on two or three occasions, only to discover later that said entries have mysteriously vanished.* Has this ever happened to you? Or, if you have a band, have you ever taken down an entry, and if so, why did you do this?

*In each case, the entry was a stub, very basic 75 words created as a starting point so that other fans could add to it.

(On a certain level I can understand wanting to maintain a sort of aura of mystery in an era where info about most subjects is only a few clicks of a mouse away; however, when dozens of indepth interviews/features on your band are available online already, well, yeah.)

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

Why would you assume that the bands have taken down your entry? More likely than not, it was Wikipedia deciding that the bands in question were "non-notable." (Who were they?)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

xpost
It's more likely that it was taken down by an admin as they probably thought it was too trivial/obscure/insignificant to justify an entry.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Jaymc: really? I didn't even consider this as a possibility.

That said, the fact that there's a Grey Daturas entry (and has been for months) and the Y3ll0w Sw@ns page I keep putting up keeps getting shafted is curious. In my (possibly useless) experience, the latter's better known than the former.

Could have to do with what you included too. Needs to be formatted a certain way etc.

we r deleted from wikypeedia because of non notability and have released 30 records in 20 years,so go figger.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that's weird, Dan, esp. because you were on a notable label.

i didnt try and insert my band into wikipedia btw,but heres th previously posted deletion log.."[edit] Bunnybrains
Tagged for speedy as "vanity self-insertion" which, whilst sounding unpleasant, isn't among the criteria. Bands are always good AfD-fodder though. Abstain. -Splash 00:18, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

Delete. Allmusic has a track listing of one cd, but no bio or other info. So they're real, but I see no evidence of meeting WP:MUSIC criteria. Friday (talk) 01:27, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
Delete nn. Barely even a claim of notability. --rob 02:53, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
Weak Keep I don't hold with "vanity self-insertion" but Goggle suggests they do it in public. And please edit it to stop shouting Dlyons493 05:37, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
Delete. Andrew pmk | Talk 22:55, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
Delete as per Friday. -- Kjkolb 07:59, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
"'Keep'" They released a 4CD box-set on Narnack records, and vinyl on Matador, which is one of the biggest and most important indie labels that I know of. I cant verify that the information on the page is true, but they are a real band, a pretty good band, and an important enough band to merit inclusion here.
Weak Delete as per Friday, but might become a decent article if left as a stub. Nihiltres 16:13, 17 September 2005 (UTC)
Keep The band more than meets WP:MUSIC criteria as has released multiple albums on multiple important indie labels (Narnack, Matador, etc). Epheron 04:27, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

Why is Helium in the "noise rock" category?

there's a rule on Wikipedia about not making entries about yourself. wikipedia is not a self-promotion tool.

The more you can document a band's existence with links to interviews/articles/reviews etc the less likely it is to get deleted, methinks. But if Bunnybrains can get deleted, that's pretty harsh.

Now let's try to find the most obscure band on Wikipedia. Here's my vote:

There's nothing in the deletion log for "y3llow sw@ns" (spelled normally). Wtf?

kudos to whomever deleted the y3ll0w sw@ns.

I've been flattered that someone has bothered to put Wikipedia entries up for a couple of groups that I'm involved in, even if they are just a couple of lines and a discog or something. I did consider deleting it to keep myself l33t and underground, but decided against it... people have even actually bought stuff after finding out about it via a random wikipedia pick.

I've obviously sold out to Wikipedia.

Oh. The tone of the article sounded like those bios on music promotional literature that constantly refer to the musician in the third person but was clearly written by the guy himself. Anyway, I didn't know this guy was famous enough to have a following (or is he?). According to the article history, it was mostly written by someone named J. Allen.

I am really really sad that the Deja Vue entry has been deleted.

In 2005 Gary Knight started a new project which after some different ideas for names became Deja Vue. This should have in fact been Deja Vu, as in the "already seen" phenomena, but due to inacurrate research Deja Vue was used and the name stayed. In December 2006 it was reported Deja Vue would be producing three tracks on the new Ashanti album.

Christ, the holocaust of words that Dan cut and pasted is more than enough fodder to justify the deletion of Wikipedia en masse.
