Apples In Stereo--New Magnetic Wonder

Wow, this is really quite good. It has one of the worst leadoff songs in years, but once you're past that, you're in for a treat.

Much more lush than their earlier records, but never sounds overproduced. It's knocking my musical socks off!

Great album. Reminds me of when I first heard Fun Trick Noisemaker. (Can't say I've listened to that one in a while but at the time, I couldn't get enough of it.)

Gotta disagree about the first track though. "Can You Feel It?" is fantastic.

lindseykai (lindseykai), Thursday, 1 February 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

ooh this is exciting!

surmounter (rra123), Thursday, 1 February 2007 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't it though?! If you want excitement, we should be discussing Robert Schneider's new Non-Pythagorean Scale. It involves logarithms and irrational numbers and shit. But it's music!

lindseykai (lindseykai), Thursday, 1 February 2007 03:52 (eighteen years ago)

robert schneider's new non-pythagorean scale!? that sounds like absolute craziness!

surmounter (rra123), Thursday, 1 February 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

I am in love with them AGAIN!!

And how cool was Robert on the Colbert Report?! He is just awesome!!

He doesn't get nearly enough credit for a little label called ELEPHANT 6 either.

I saw them four times during cmj (ok, that part is a little weird, but one of them was acoustic!).

Non-Pythagorean Scale

Does anyone have any real info on this? Nothing I've found on the web goes beyond a surface description.

I've only heard the song "Energy" and thought it was pretty lame. I'll probably see the Apples this month in Pittsburgh, though.

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

The songs on the new album weren't written using the scale, just some interludes between tracks. The CD also includes a QuickTime movie of Schneider explaining how he came up with it. If I understand correctly, he based the intervals between tones on irrational numbers instead of rational ones. As a result, the tones get closer together the higher you are in the octave. It sounded strange but it worked somehow.

Can't say I have a natural understanding of music theory but this is what I got out of it.

OK, GREAT album. Easily my favorite of theirs.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 1 February 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

Bump...

The indifference is killing me. Surely somebody else out there must be feeling this. C'mon people!!!

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

I think everyone gave up on AIS years ago.

a.b. (alanbanana), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

That's too bad, because if this record was released by some obscure band nobody ever heard of, everybody here would be turning cartwheels singing its praises.

It's exceedingly rare for a band to make their best record more than ten years out, but this is one of those times.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Sunday, 4 February 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

probably not. going back to listen to the first few records reveals that they weren't as good as I thought they were at the time.

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 4 February 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

I'll take this record over something/anything?

Lamar J. (that liz kid), Sunday, 4 February 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

I want very badly to like this, and the production is nice and the songs pretty good, but in a way the ELO touches serve mainly to hilight how far he is from classic ELO.

Also, I hate to say this yet again, but when you're working madly to improve your sound, playing, production, etc., would it kill to take a voice lesson or two. What sounded kinda sweet in the early days just doesn't work so well w/the beefed up sound. Indie rawk's nasal high pitched achilles heel strikes yet again.

Not to say that it's not a fun record...

the 'making of' series on youtube is adorable!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

SERIOUSLY FEELING THIS

Davey D (Dave Depper), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

That's what I'm talking about!! Yeah yeah, let's hear it dawg pound!!!

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

I wish Robert would've put one of his "top 40 boogie rock" songs on this album.

blotter Budweiser Hackeysadk (nickalicious), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

Some of this is pretty great, especially "Sunday Sounds", "Same Old Drag" and that two-parter at the end.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

Seven Stars and Play Tough are my favorites.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

Just bought the dee-luxx 180 gram vinyl. In love...

Davey D (Dave Depper), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

four months pass...

I loved velocity of sound when it came out, can only listen to a couple of songs now though. This one however is littered with great ones. Really, really awsome. They even out oasis, oasis on open eyes,

seven stars! so good

gman, Sunday, 24 June 2007 08:16 (eighteen years ago)

Great album. As for "Velocity of Sound", I didn't like that very much when it came out, but after "New Magnetic Wonder" I started to like it. Strange.

zeus, Monday, 25 June 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

Dear Robert Schneider: Please lose Kevin Barnes's phone number. Love, a fan.

No Vacation owns. Not sure what to make of the weird mix of ELO wankfests (not a bad thing) and short straightforward tracks but I'll be buying the CD.
