102 Beats That: will be up as soon as I can finish it. I fucked up last week (domestic issues) and did hardly any of the work I meant to on it. Hopefully we'll get something this weekend, and prior to that I'm going to try and notify by email everyone who they're reviewing and who's reviewing their record.

WE NEED a nice logo for it or a picture or something.

Streets Special: yes we are having a Streets Special. Articles ASAP please if you want to be part of it, or write to me saying when you can get something to me and we'll work out a deadline. We need a logo for this too.

Other Articles: the article pile is running a bit low. Again, my fault, I've been meaning to write to ppl I like and try to drum more stuff up and just haven't felt up to it. If you've got any ideas then they're very welcome. C90 Go!s are always appreciated too!

Duel! 2002: back on schedule, draw for round 2 is this Thursday in London, hooray.

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for your patience everyone!

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

io nylpm 2 articles which i PROMISE i will work on this week = my FREE WEEK => unfortunately [insert name of well- known improv drummer] just rang ten minutes ago and asked me how i wuz getting on with reading his manuscript ahem, and i had to rescue it from where it is folded up to stop the fridge being wobbly

mark s, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(eddie if you are reading this, that is an amusing self-deprecatory lie)

mark s, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Will "am i cool or not?" ever return?

Jeff, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeff - don't know. I have discussed doing it with a couple of people but (again I think due to my disorganisation) nothing came of it.

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And there's THIS, too....

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

tom- I tried to get an article on improv (a listener appreciation): We talked abt it in another thread. As I had a pile of work I couldn't focus on this. If you still want it I could do it in August.

What is Duel!

Julio Desouza, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio - that'd be great, whenever you want it really.

Duel! = the worst-band-in-the-world quest ongoing on NYLPM currently (keeping NYLPM going frankly thanks to dearth of effort from me, to change this evening hopefully)

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom - pl put my mind at rest - we could do albs as well as singles for 102 beats that, right? (I just knoooooow I'm going to get a pissing Radiohead rec...)

Andrew L, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Put me down for a C90 Go!, Tom -- I can have it written sometime this week.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ace Ned.

Andrew - yeah. Most people did, me included. No Radiohead though there was one record that two people did (one did a whole LP one did a single track).

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hey Tom...I'm kinda worried that my 102 Beats thing might not have got to you...I sent it from work, you see. Please, put my mind at rest.

jel --, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rest, O mind of JEL.

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to review Futurism, if that's ok? Any particular word range? I was thinking circa 600-700......

Ronan, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The NYLPM rule is that anything over 500 should be an article not a blog entry, so 700-ish is fine. I'm writing something on a couple of Futurism tracks but I think it'll end up on the blog.

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am down for all art-stuff as usual!!

ethan, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Curious about this band that warrants their own special, I went and downloaded. "Don't Mug Yourself" and "Has It Come to This."

Somebody please please please tell me this stuff is supposed to be funny or something.

John Darnielle, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's supposed to be the voice of the Midlands people. Like the Specials were, see.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, I sent you an e-mail a while back about restarting the AICON section (which I can only assume got lost due to your disorganisation :P ) . I'm still available for that if you're willing to start me in the right direction.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

After the Strokes special now the Streets special. Is it sufficient nowadays to start your band name with "Str" and you get all the hype you want? BTW the Streets are even more rubbish than the Strokes.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Upcoming special: Stripes, the White

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm holding out for a Stranglers special.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"the strums"

geeta, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Sarah's article on Five?

Nicole, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, i realize now that the '102 Beats That' logo i sent ya had freakytrigger.COM written on it. which is wrong. so i'll change that. I also want to make a STREETS logo. oh no! ethan vs mitch ART FITE! Oh NO!!

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's supposed to be the voice of the Midlands people. Like the Specials were, see.

Well, OK, maybe, but "geezer/meet, yeah" (from "Don't Mug Yourself")? That's not just weak, that's like the wackest rhyme in the whole history of the world. Except for a bunch of other rhymes all over the track. Eek.

John Darnielle, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Altho I must allow that the sung bit at the end is totally great ("and then this geezer turned round to me and said, 'what are you doing, you twat?'and I was like, 'What the fuck is this?'") and that the song itself, minus the weak-ass reprazentin' on the mic, is maddeningly catchy.

John Darnielle, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

John, it ain't about the SCENE, and it ain't about the RHYMES either. The track yer talkin about is actually "All Got Our Runnins" (can someone please post the *real* "Don't Mug Yourself" where I can hear it?) and it's probably my favourite Streets track. Skinner's rhymes are rarely that clever, but there's a crazy internal logic, an instinctive flair for turning random seeming talking into something quite musical and rhythmic. Admittedly Jay-Z can do both, but Jay-Z isn't really so radical.

Tim, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There, I sent the Futurism review to the ebros mail account. Hope it's ok.

Ronan, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Excellent cheers Ronan, Blimey I can see there actually being an update tonight...

Tom, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yah Tim yer right of course: what I was trying to say in the follow- up post was that despite a near-allergic initial reaction (the weak- ass rhymez, the Dre-worship of the synth-strings, and the rather comic effect of the guy's voice) to the song, I found myself listening to it, like, lots. Like seven times yesterday, that kinda lots. However it must surely be intended to be funny: I mean the "can't wait to live life my way" sounds so alarmingly like a Spice Girls line -- rite?

John Darnielle, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OI! Ewing!

Graham, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
