David Lee Roth has officially rejoined Van Halen. Let's place bets on how long this one will last!

Jeff Treppel (Heavy Metal Hamster), Friday, 2 February 2007 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be generous and give it three months.

Jeff Treppel (Heavy Metal Hamster), Friday, 2 February 2007 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

LIES

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 2 February 2007 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

From the press release: Eddie Van Halen states, "I am very excited to get back to the core of what made VAN HALEN."

Yeah Eddie? How about patching things up with Michael Anthony then?!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 2 February 2007 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

Oh now that's just stupid.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 3 February 2007 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

I hope that Roth walks out onstage, in May, in North Carolina...stares out at the crowd...looks over at Edward Van Halen, and says, "Hey Ed, LOOK AT ALL THE FUCKING PEOPLE HERE TONIGHT!" Laughs...then says, "Damn man, it seems just like fucking yesterday..." As Ed peels into DOA...

Wolfie or Michael...1984 or 2007...Young or Old...if that doesn't give you the fucking chills...

Then get out your copy of fucking Balance and Bette Midler. Hit shuffle on your fucking pink CD player...and enjoy your BUBBLE bath...FAG.

amazing

I have to admit: looking forward

Dominique (dleone), Saturday, 3 February 2007 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

I think it will not only last at least 10 years, it will signal a full return to form. I predict a rash of new hits rivaling "Jump", critical reappraisal and rediscovery by a new generation, and David Lee Roth reaching new heights of never-before-attained sex symbol machismo.

the bluegrass thing was a hundred times cooler than anything van halen has done in 20 years

David Lee Roth is like Hell's Kitchen, Sammy Hager is like Jersey City.

Why must there be all this animosity between Roth fans and Hagar fans? Why can't you like BOTH Roth and Hagar Van Halen? They should unite in their mutual hatred of Gary Cherone!

Jeff Treppel (Heavy Metal Hamster), Saturday, 3 February 2007 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

"Why can't you like BOTH Roth and Hagar Van Halen?"

Have you listened to Hagar Van Halen?

yes

In the known universe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

Hagar Van Halen had some really good albums! They obviously aren't up to the quality of Van Halen I or 1984, but as far as 80s hard rock goes, they were pretty darn solid. The hits were mostly the ballots, which were the weakest part of the albums, but if you listen to the actual records, there are some great rockers on there.

Jeff Treppel (Heavy Metal Hamster), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

Ballads, not ballots. This is rock 'n roll, not an election (although Alice Cooper's "Election" is still one of his best songs).

Jeff Treppel (Heavy Metal Hamster), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

Obv, Dave VH is the "for the ages stuff." But it does seem to me that Sammy would be the easier dude to get along with. Dave seems to be complicated, which makes him a better artist but judging by various informed accounts, such as Mikey, and how deluded he frequently sounded on the radio, he's apparently difficult to be around.

EVH does seem to be a methed-out control freak: alienating Antony for the crime of enjoying Hagar's company more (clearly, the two are temperamentally similar) and going out and working instead of doing nuthin', after, what, 25 years of being a loyal lieutenant.

I bet you that Dave will probably palpably be more of pro on tour, and that EVH will frequently redefine horror show for our age.

veronica moser (veronica moser), Saturday, 3 February 2007 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

You're probably right on the money, Veronica, and it's inarguable that the DLR Van Halen years are by far the superior of the two singers. Still, while Dave might be a better "artist," if you were to compile good greatest hits collections for both Sammy and Dave's solo work (the DLR one that came out isn't bad, but the couple Hagar compilations have been woefully incomplete), I'd say they'd stack up about equally in terms of both songwriting and just plain fun. The individual albums, of course, are spotty as hell (although I do get a kick out of Skyscraper). I place the blame more on Eddie (and the time period) for the inconsistency of the Hagar Van Halen records more than I do on Hagar himself.

Jeff Treppel (Heavy Metal Hamster), Sunday, 4 February 2007 04:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm kinda betting I won't get to see this, because it'll be an outdoor arena like the Meadowlands instead of the Garden. But if they play the Garden, I'll try to be there.

Eddie is on the cover of some guitar mag this month, shirtless. He looks like Lawrence Tierney in a brown mullet wig.

The trek will feature founding VAN HALEN members David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen, with Eddie's son Wolfgang on bass.

VAN HALEN last toured in 2004 with vocalist Sammy Hagar, grossing nearly $40 million, according to Billboard Boxscore.

Wolfgang Van Halen, the projected replacement for VH bassist Michael Anthony, told People magazine in April 2007 that he wasn't disappointed there wasn’t' going to be a VAN HALEN tour this summer following his father's decision to check himself into rehab. "My dad's taking care of himself," he said. "I also think I'm too young for the experience, because I know there are a lot of bad things out there."

Eddie Van Halen issued a statement addressed to fans in early March announcing that he was seeking treatment because "at the moment I do not feel that I can give you my best.

"That's why I have decided to enter a rehabilitation facility to work on myself, so that in the future I can deliver the 110 percent that I feel I owe you and want to give you," the statement said.

Back in January, Eddie Van Halen told Rolling Stone magazine about Wolfgang, "Wait until you hear this kid play. I pick him up from school every day and we jam. We've got a shredding bass player now that's laying down the law for Alex [Van Halen, drums], so I get to weave in and out."

VAN HALEN was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March.

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 13 August 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

lolz @ reunion sans Michael Anthony - I mean of all the members NOT to be involved, he's kinda not the one anyone would've expected to be the lone holdout.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 13 August 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

He was fired so Eddie's son could join.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 13 August 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

they're like the fuckin Von Trapp Family Singers now, can't imagine Dave will enjoy it for very long before they gang up on him and start some shit

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 13 August 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

Here's hoping sober Eddie != asshole Eddie and that Dave sticks around for the whole shebang.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sticking with my prediction of 3 shows.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

Punch out in Philadelphia, Matt?

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

i think Michael Anthony's absence is HUGE. what does everyone else think? there's just something about him. i mean, sure, he's a great bass player, but it's michael fuckin' anthony, the dude with the jack daniels bass. he's vital! i'm bummed.

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

yeah his backing vocals are pretty key imo. Even so, I might really try to make that St. Louis show. If they make it that far.

will, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

It being 2007 and all, I would honestly prefer to see the Hagar/Anthony "Other Half" tour than this version of Van Halen.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 02:28 (eighteen years ago)

I hear you, but that's probably a lot of "Right Now" and "When It's Love" and, uh "Mas Tequila" to put up with.

will, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

For no rational reason, I'm being an optimist about this one - I thought this was more likely than a Police reunion, and that seems to be...well, going, at least. I'm going to take the ballsiest stance and predict they'll finish the whole thing.

chris.steffen, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

I'd be happier about this if it was a Don't Look Back/complete album show and they just played all of VH I or Fair Warning.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 05:13 (eighteen years ago)

go down a little bit, and see Dave shot out of a cannon; Ed and Al as uncomfortable as MTV awards '96; Dave making conspicuous refs to Wolfie, which may be at Eddie's insistence (or maybe Dave, who I would guess, his nuttiness notwithstanding, has a big heart, is just trying to reassure the kid…

Veronica Moser, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

No Michael Anthony = No Reunion. Boyctt! Boycott! Boycott!

They're in it for the money -- the greenbacks alone will pretty much guarantee the dates above, and probably more.

christoff, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

Everyone seemed in good spirits, but the fact that DLR was talking about a lean mean updated VH is kind of worrisome. If they make songs from Women and Children First sound like songs from Balance, that's not what anyone paid for.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

This has crash and burn written all over it.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

The exclusion of Michael Anthony is a travesty, but as borderline embarrassing replacing him in the band with Wolfgang is, I think it's kind of sweet that Eddie seems to be doing it mainly for his son and is letting the kid write the setlist. His voice might even be high enough to do the backing vox justice!

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's kind of sweet that Eddie seems to be doing it mainly for his son and is letting the kid write the setlist.

Brings to mind George Lucas letting his kid attend dailies and make suggestions on the Star Wars prequels

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

Convincing EVH that fans want to hear deep cuts from Women And Children First > Jar Jar Binks

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

You know, it's worth bearing in mind that according to my iPod, the first six albums have a collective running time of only 3 hours 21 minutes. Once you chop out the little acoustic instrumentals and stuff like "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)," they could play almost their entire DLR-era catalog in one night, no problem.

unperson, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

20-minute version of Eruption

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

You're forgetting 5-minute DLR monologue nonsense between every other song in the set. x-post

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

And the time outs for hits from the oxygen tank for EVH and his son.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's kind of sweet that Eddie seems to be doing it mainly for his son and is letting the kid write the setlist.

And to think people got mad when Sprial Stairs sequenced Brighten the Corners.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

They did? I think BtC is pretty perfectly sequenced.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)
