Silverchair in the year 2007. Do you care?

I guess I've always held a soft spot for them, but 12 years removed from Frogstomp and 5 years since their last album Diorama they have a new single that bears little if any resemblance to what they've done up to now.

How will the ILM jury rule?

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Saturday, 3 February 2007 06:45 (eighteen years ago)

the best part of this was going to their pictures page on myspace and that annoying little talking banner said:

"I am counting the minutes until we can be together again"

These guys are beyond douche bags, they are douche pumps.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Saturday, 3 February 2007 06:49 (eighteen years ago)

"he's not dead yet"

Thats why its so fucking amazing!

what happened to the little anorexic eddie vedder man?
when did the guy from savage garden get beefed up?

Christopher Costello (CGC), Saturday, 3 February 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

It's twelve o'clock, and it's a wonderful day.
I know you hate me, but I'll ask anyway.
Won't you come with me, to a place in a little town.
The only way to get there's to go straight down.
There's no bathroom, and there is no sink.
The water out of the tap is very, hard to drink,
Very hard to drink.

You, wait 'til tomorrow
You, wait 'til tomorrow

You say that money, isn't everything,
But I'd like to see you live without it.
You think you can keep on going living like a king.
Oohh babe, but I strongly doubt it.

Very hard to drink.

You gonna wait 'til, fat boy,
Fat boy, wait until tomorrow

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Sunday, 4 February 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

verrrrrrry hard to drink!!!!!!!

the only thing I remember about Quicksilver is the Rolling Stone story about some kid who killed his family whilst rocking out to Frogstomp.

milo z (mlp), Sunday, 4 February 2007 08:50 (eighteen years ago)

I still don't understand how where the tap is, if there's no sink.

xhuxk (xhuck), Sunday, 4 February 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 4 February 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

This is a bummer. I really liked Frogstomp. And little anorexic girls everywhere loved Ana's Song (actually, even non anorexic ones did because it made Johns even more hot in his percieved vulnerablity). Now they look like arrogant rockstars. Even the mulleted dude.

Andi Headphones (Andi Headphones), Sunday, 4 February 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

it's a song for water softening.

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 4 February 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

the only thing I remember about Quicksilver is the Rolling Stone story about some kid who killed his family whilst rocking out to Frogstomp.

It was SPIN! Yeah, I almost made a reference to that but couldn't be arsed, didn't think anyone else would remember that. He hated his family because they didn't understand his music, I think. I remember one bit where he's watching Nirvana Unplugged on TV and his family's all "LOL he can't sing" so he killed them. I think he pushed his mom down the stairs or something?

Marmot (marmotwolof), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

hahah is that a mullet or a shadow?

chris joannou (sic?), you moose

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Monday, 5 February 2007 06:12 (eighteen years ago)

Mulletshadow is so gonna be my new band name

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 5 February 2007 06:39 (eighteen years ago)

So glad that article exists and wasn't just a false memory. The Internet turns up nothing.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 5 February 2007 06:52 (eighteen years ago)

i remember that article too. it freaked the hell out of me

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 5 February 2007 06:54 (eighteen years ago)

while i don't give much of a toss about defending this dreadful band

These blokes are just a weak copy of Nickelback. Rubbish.

this is kinda impossible since they significantly predate them

jimbo (electricsound), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

well, the rubbish bit is true

jimbo (electricsound), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

You know, I'd never paid attention to "Tomorrow"s lyrics before, outside of the chorus. WTF is it about? I wanna say "prison", but wasn't he like, 14 when he wrote that song?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 03:11 (eighteen years ago)

Also, god he looks dreaful now. At least as a kid he had that 90s Even Dando kind of thing going on for him.

Diorama was a pretty good record, Van Dyke Parks string arrangements and all.

mms (mms), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

I agree. Never understood their appeal until Diorama. I am loving Straight Lines right now.

-- xhuxk (xhuck)

There's two, one in the front garden, one in the back garden - for the lawn. You have to get down at an awkward angle to drink from either tap - hence, 'very hard to drink'.

moley, Monday, 6 August 2007 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

That's probably how he got that rather nasty black eye.

moley, Monday, 6 August 2007 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

the first three records were as wretched as wretched gets. god knows why people kept paying attention. but i guess 16 year old girls can move units too

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 04:18 (seventeen years ago)

"units"

latebloomer, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 04:54 (seventeen years ago)

*deliberately ambiguous*

:)

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

Out of morbid curiousity I watched their set at Lollapalooza this weekend. Let's just say that their more recent attempts at inflated, orchestral pop do not translate well to the stage.

She does this with pregnant people too. This could be lucrative. I'm going to set up a tent.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 4 January 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

I was talking with a friend at a dinner party only last night about the aesthetic merits of Ms Imbruglia, whilst listening to some vintage 'chair, and then I open the paper this morning to read...

preschoolin' life (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 July 2011 21:52 (thirteen years ago)

man you can HAVE Neon Ballroom...it was at that point I couldn't suppress the laughter anymore.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 10 July 2011 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

funny thing is that i think the last time this band took themselves seriously was "anthem for the year 2000" and after that they just started writing showtunes arranged by van dyke parks

best possible career trajectory imo

preschoolin' life (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 July 2011 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

Is it cynical for me to assume that they were probably only signed in the first place because the lead dude bore a passing resemblance to a recently deceased Kurt Cobain and execs were hoping that stupid kids wouldn't be able to tell the diff? Because they really were horrid.

I found myself tunelessly bellowing lyrics from 'Tomorrow' to a friend last week after I learned that he had somehow remained blissfully ignorant for the past 25 years that they were seriously singing the words 'FAT BOY, FAT BOY-EEE'.

It occasionally occurs to me how rough it must be to have the world forever judge you on the basis of something you did when you were, say, sixteen.

And then I think about FAT BOY-EEE, and I laugh.

Sgt. Laughter (Old Lunch), Thursday, 12 July 2018 19:41 (six years ago)

matt - yeah that works, but a) man just travel back 16 years and start a general "lol @ Luke St33le" thread? even this single is four months old and has had a sequel and Coachella and Vivid shows and press like Luke Steele & Daniel Johns Once Got High And Buried DREAMS Demos Near Windsor Castle b) fair enough I admire your lackadaisical commitment to keeping this thraed alive c) lol

kelp, clam and carrion (sic), Thursday, 12 July 2018 20:24 (six years ago)

they wrote that song at 14 if i remember rightly

it's still better than that fucking straight lines song

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 12 July 2018 20:31 (six years ago)

imagine if both DREAMS singles were remixed by another person with some influence but minor talent who made one good record a long time ago:
