mark s (mark s), Saturday, 3 February 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

Marquee for the song, Freebird for the solo

Spate of Hijackings (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 3 February 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

Marquee for the solo, Freebird for the song.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Saturday, 3 February 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

Marquee for both.

jimn (jimnaseum), Saturday, 3 February 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

I hear something new in "Marquee Moon" whenever I hear it, so I'm going to go along with that.

However, if we're drawing up two camps here, you can put me in the "Marquee for the song, Freebird for the solo" camp.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 3 February 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

haha DC nerds to thread

Haikunym (Haikunym), Saturday, 3 February 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, I think the "Freebird" solo is a bunch of repetitive wheedling, not great at all. The "Marquee Moon" solo is unique and subtle, inducing a trance before building to that huge climax and crashing into that lush bed of jangle and guitar sobs. I'm picking it as a better song too. If it were up against "Whipping Post" or "Mountain Song," I'd have to think though.

Sundar (sundar), Saturday, 3 February 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeebird!

wesley useche (electronicmaji), Saturday, 3 February 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

Marquee Moon. Free Bird is damn fine song, with some great soloing, but Marquee Moon is as well, and isn't a total "Layla" rip-off.

Yeah, I said it. What?!?!?!

Skynyrd's best songs are not 1) Free Bird or 2) Sweet Home Alabama.
And the Allman Bros. DESTROY them in the Southern Rock category.

B.L.A.M. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

The great Allman Bros. war is upon us.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

And I will bear the standard for the Bros. Who's with me??!?!?!?!!?!?!

B.L.A.M. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

Does anybody remember Naked Prey? The one time I saw them, they seemed to connect the dots between Television and Skynyrd, which was a very fine thing to do.

A Radio Picture (Rrrickey), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

i will carry a standard for the Bros, but Marquee Moon towers over freebird

grbchv! (skowly), Saturday, 3 February 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

Marquee Moon. as Skynyrd songs go, "freebird" is corny

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 3 February 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

Agreed. I think I shall listen to Marquee Moon right.....NOW!!!!

B.L.A.M. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Saturday, 3 February 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

play it pretty for atlanta

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 4 February 2007 05:56 (eighteen years ago)

Marquee for NOT BEING FUCKING FREEBIRD.

John Justen goes to work like an architect (johnjusten), Sunday, 4 February 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

Both songs have that double "heartbeat" rhythm guitar playing chords. "Freebird" has a chika-chika in between them like a heart murmur though.

In order for me to really decide, I need to hear the Kronos Quartet cover Skynyrd, k thanx.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Sunday, 4 February 2007 06:09 (eighteen years ago)

I always thought Akron/Family (esp. split album with Angels of Light material) kind of split the difference between Television and Lynyrd Skynyrd/Allman Bros./CSN&Y type stuff. I love it. I wonder whose side they'd take...

Does ILM love Akron/Fam?

Yoshinorimike (Yoshinorimike), Sunday, 4 February 2007 07:17 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. (New one not as much)

Matt Dorinsky (Matt Dorinsky), Sunday, 4 February 2007 11:33 (eighteen years ago)

I love "Layla" and am not a huge "Freebird" fan but I don't really see how "Freebird" is a ripoff of "Layla."

Did Kronos play "Marquee Moon?" Was it any good (i.e. better than their Hendrix)?

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 4 February 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

(I don't hate "Freebird" or anything FWIW. The slide guitar bits are nice.)

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

Does ILM love Akron/Fam?

-- Yoshinorimike (Yoshinorimik...), February 4th, 2007.

I dunno about the rest of ILM, but I love 'em to death and am eagerly awaiting my first opportunity to see them live.

Bernard Snowy (sixteen sergeants), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

I've always thought that "Marquee Moon" was um, anticipated, by "Heavy Load" by Free. Very similar structure.

Phil Knight (PhilK), Sunday, 4 February 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

Freebird is just a ripoff of Layla

If I had been in a bar, this would have been the point of the evening when I randomly threw my drink into the face of some girl I decided I didn't like because of her shirt or something. Totally without cause or justification.

B.L.A.M. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Monday, 5 February 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

Kronos did play "Marquee Moon"

It wasn't very good.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 5 February 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

Hard to beat Marquee Moon -- amazing song. That said, the solo of Freebird is just an event, as if it were its own carnival.

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Monday, 5 February 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously, what's great about the "Freebird" solo?

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 5 February 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

The "Freebird" solo has more momentum - it feels like part of the song itself. Which makes the "Marquee Moon" solo more of a "solo", in the improv sense. So TV wins, solo-wise - even tho I STILL much prefer Richard Lloyd to Tom Verlaine.

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Monday, 5 February 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Marquee Moon solo sounds like angels crying, in a good way.

Freebird solo sounds like having sex with a pig in a swamp, while covered in gravy, red beans, and spanish moss.

Marquee Moon wins.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 5 February 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

Sundar, it's so great because you've been listening to this lugubrious dirge for about ten minutes and finally something has happened to rouse you from your slumber.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Monday, 5 February 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

haha mr que you will make me learn to love freebird yet

say it with blood diamonds (a_p), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, I guess I prefer "Gimme Three Steps" and "That Smell" to "Free Bird."

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

I like 'em both, incidentally, but "Marquee Moon" is far less played out. Also features my favourite dual guitar-mesh on any album that isn't Trout Mask Replica.

[Common thread: Both songs had to wait until the CD reissue era to have their full-length unfaded big-finish versions released.]

Myonga Von Boring (M. Agony Von Bontee), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

Ever heard "Highway Song" by Blackfoot? It's a clear Freebird rip, but better.

Bill Magill (Bill Magill), Monday, 5 February 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

The last few minutes of Freebird are so fucking ecstatic and perfect that there's really no comparison. Too bad about the tenth of an hour you spend getting there...

the new sincerity (Pye Poudre), Monday, 5 February 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

This thread is silly. I prefer Tuesday's Gone.

strom (strom), Monday, 5 February 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

"Green Grass and High Tides"!

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

haha I just realized I meant "Mountain Jam" instead of "Mountain Song" up there, although I'd take classic Jane's over "Freebird" too.

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 5 February 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

UK chart trivia

highest chart placing of each on the UK top 40

16/04/1977 Television - Marquee Moon #30 (Prove It got to #25 though)
19/06/1982 Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird #21

i am guessing there must have been radio edits...

all the A/F talk here is OTM - live especially, they do some awesome heavy boogie-psych stuff. i saw them last year, and they played for fucking 2 hours or something. the first 45 minutes to an hour was just two heavy heavy hippie jamz, then they did their poppier modest mousey stuff which was cool for like 10 minutes or something, then they did this unforgivable singalong bullshit. thing is, when dudes arent indulging their summer camp stuff, they totally have one of my two or three favorite band sounds around today. and i mean, as long as they have 45 minutes of psychy stuff, i will def go see them...

69 (plsmith), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

WTF "Freebird" charted in 1982?! And I had no idea Television charted anywhere.

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, in a nation where Trout Mask Replica can peak at #21, anything's possible. (Presumably John Peel was a factor.)

Myonga Von Billboard (M. Agony Von Bontee), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

according to wiki Marquee Moon got an incredibly good NME review sparking general interest. perhaps someone else who was around at the time could explain, also they could explain why Freebird re-entered and peaked in 1982.

acrobat (elwisty), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

"...also they could explain why Freebird re-entered and peaked in 1982."

Because it's rad?

the new sincerity (Pye Poudre), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, is/was the music press actually that powerful in the UK, to the point where it actually affects what mainstream listeners purchase on a statistical level?
