two favorite moments:

1. "contrary to rumor, i'd like to take a few questions right now."

2. the gtr solo with his arm around the backup singer's waist.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 4 February 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, thanks for catching me up with this. I remember someone saying this was going to happen and forgot about it.

Booper Soul (Bimble...), Sunday, 4 February 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

Well, to be fair I don't have cable, so I wouldn't have been able to watch it anyway, most likely.

Booper Soul (Bimble...), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, he looks great, I mean - how old is he now?

Booper Soul (Bimble...), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

48, and he does indeed look great.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

Good lord, a guitar solo with a girl around his arm? How does he do it??

Booper Soul (Bimble...), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

step one: hire skinny girls.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

Man, I'm not a huge Prince fan, but that was faaaantastic!

Booper Soul (Bimble...), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha Dr. Feelgood!!

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

Does somebody have a link to Prince-related Superbowl betting odds? Odds he closes his set with "Let's Go Crazy" = 4:5. Easy money, right?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Rock Lobster...

darrell perry (natlawdp), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Nice song selection with "Anotherloverholenyohead."

John Fredland (jfredland), Sunday, 4 February 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

so do you think this will be a secular half-time show?

richard wood johnson (rwj), Sunday, 4 February 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh, forgot about the Jehovah thing...hope he gives a little love to James perhaps.

Phil Dokes (sunny), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

they sent out a medley of all along th watchtower w sum foo fighters song that is as clunky as a gypsys jalopy

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Sunday, 4 February 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

I heard that Watchtower / Best of You live song, it was horrid. Of all the songs for Prince to cover, why choose a Foo Fighters song? According to Howard Stern they send a copy to him and asked him to speculate whether or not Prince was going to perform it at the Super Bowl.

def zep (calstars), Sunday, 4 February 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Prince is getting divorced, right? "Best Of You"'s double meanings (it's all "are you giving or being taken") probably hit him hard.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 4 February 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't see anything special in the video of the 'press conference.' And the fuck-you to the journos who were there... Aren't people tired of hearing Johnny B Goode?

def zep (calstars), Sunday, 4 February 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

also the Foos had a radio hit with "Darling Nikki," so maybe he's returning the favor

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 4 February 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

Prince and John Waters look kind of separated at birth to me.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 4 February 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

I've never especially liked "Anotherloverholenyohead," but I like this version. I should really try to see him live once while he's still performing at this level.

He is playing in the rain and appears to be dry.

He has powers we cannot comprehend.

Yeah, the Watchtower/Best of You song was a bit of a buzzkill.

Zachary S (Zach S), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

Best of You sounded way better than a foo fighters song has any right to expect to, though

mizzzell (mizzzell), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

Love that "Anotherlover" solo.

Welcome to the Pazz and Jop poll. (M Matos), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

did Prince always shred in concert?

milo z (mlp), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

omg yes

Welcome to the Pazz and Jop poll. (M Matos), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

That's true.

In my head, I had mixed up "Best of You" with "Times Like These", which is somehow even worse of a song. So I was pleasantly surprised that it was any other song he was covering.

Zachary S (Zach S), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

Audience sung Purple Rain outro sounded so awesome

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

aahhh! That was great! The ending was pretty spectacular.

Tape Store (Tape Store), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

considering it was raining all up on his shit, the guitar kept cutting out and the mix was bad, PRINCE FUCKING KILLED IT!

chaki (chaki), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

The marching band was used pretty tastefully too. I agree, considering the mix was weird and the rain must have been a factor, Prince did a great job.

Zachary S (Zach S), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

chaki otm. mizzzel too.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

I'm glad he made it through the halftime show without literally being struck by lightning.

Maltodextrin (Maltodextrin), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

Certain arrangements were made when he and Mother Nature had their sit-down last week.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

It was strange when they started off the show with CG lightning (that WAS CG, right?)

Zachary S (Zach S), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

chaki otm

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

The mix was great. All you could hear through my TV was vocals, guitar, and drums (and some keyboards at the very end). Total metal Prince. Loved it.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

Great, so I missed another Prince TV performance. Why didn't I turn on my TV when I knew half-time was coming?

Rockist Scientist, Hippopoptimist (RSLaRue), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

so great that the most riveting and r-o-c-k live performance you'll see "in super bowl history" (not that i've watched every one) is from someone most folks consider pop/ r&b.

from the lightning that seemed to cue it to how well he played under those circumstances -- fucking hell! i wondered about that one bit after "watchtower," had no idea it was a foo fighters song. maybe he was playing to his audience a bit, playing his hits (mostly) and the rock songs to show he can shred better than stevie ray, et al? i half expected a j.b. song myself.

i also thought he worked with stadium sound really really well, and foregrounding the vocals, drums and guitar seemed intentional, down and dirty style, awesome.

i'd love to hear a record from him where he's just a trio: electric gtr, bass/ keybs, drums. or has he done that and i don't know? bootlegs sounding like that out there somewhere maybe?

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

yes there is one its dope AND it's an official release or it was limited or something. its called the undertaker.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

oops i guess its not.. but look for it! it rocks! from wiki:

[edit] The Undertaker
Prince originally intended to give this live CD away free with 1,000 copies of Guitar Player Magazine in 1994, but he was told by Warner Brothers that he couldn't. Some rare copies were leaked and heavily bootlegged.

The album's track list was as follows:

"The Ride"
"Poor Goo"
"Honkey Tonk"
"Bambi"
"Zannalee"
"The Undertaker"
"Dolphin"

Greatest Super Bowl halftime concert our generation will ever see. It stopped the rain and made it turn back on again. Wardrobe malfunction's got nothing on this.

great performance
terrible game

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 5 February 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

Well, you're in Chicago. But yeah, Prince was great .

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Monday, 5 February 2007 03:51 (eighteen years ago)

Best halftime performance in recent memory by a long shot. I loved that the dancers were doing their thing stepping in puddles. A real chance of electrocution and Prince couldn't care less. Classic.

def zep (calstars), Monday, 5 February 2007 04:03 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe that when you search "Prince" on youtube the first thing that comes up is Bonny Prince Billy.

I also realized today that if you search "khyber" in Google the Philly rock club comes up before the pass.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Monday, 5 February 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

That mix had to have been a screw up. They seemed to finally fix it near the end so you could ACTUALLY HEAR THE BAND.

Prince was pretty rocking.

YOU RULEZ CHAKI.

For the record, that was a great performance by any measure. Not Prince's greatest, not the greatest I've ever seen him (live or otherwise) but dood certainly backed up his rep pretty fucking well.

This reminds me of that thread when he tore it up on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on VH1, and the haters who cling to the fact that they'd heard better, they'd heard him better, etc.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 04:40 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks from a troll, Chaki.

Here's how great that halftime show was: I watched it with a super-bowl party crowd of family & friends of all ages, most of them not Prince fans or even especially music lovers, and the room was spellbound. My friend's 3-year-old seemed not to be paying attention, but at the climax of Purple Rain he held up his toy, air-guitar style, and stuck his fist in the air like a rock star, like he could *feel* the attitude somehow. Everybody applauded.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 05:08 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, so 12-minute version of Shoop = the Undertaker's obligatory WTF cover

The Reverend Rodney J. Greene (R. J. Greene), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 06:24 (eighteen years ago)

i had completely forgotten that i had picked up this video last year. hidden away up in the attic till now, as my video machine aint all that. but i have just checked it, and even though the sound wasn't crystal clear, but still was worth checking out.
its a strange dark 40 minutes thats for sure.
starts with model type girl calling Victor (remember all that nonsense !) on the phone in a bland office lobby - getting the brush off and then taking massive overdose of pills.
then cut to rest of the 'film' in which prince and band (only 2 really - drum and bass by michael b and sonny t) get down some deep and heavy funk-n-rock on a rehearsal stage while the girl falls about in her drug induced state, including one upfront throwing up soundeffect at the end of 'the ride'.
lo-fi filming make this look like a warhol type of art movie.
i guess this would be classed as a For Fans Only type of release.

I think they looked way hotter in the warm up show because of the dress "a la 60s tina".

Halftime show was fucking-A-MAZING. The single best sports-related thing I've ever seen in my life. Agree that it wasn't the second coming of Christ, but fuck that sad, soulless quibbling. He slew a billion dragons with his giant purple dicktar. How often you get to see that on TV?

• Prince? The artist formerly known as &*$%(!@?

• How many of the 75,000 ticket holders and 1.3 gazillion television viewers, do you think, can name even one song by &*$%(!@?

• Zero, would be the answer to that.

fuck yr face blogger (a_p), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

if he's gonna play the superbowl, i want it to be overblown. I want him to rip a guitar solo and i want the stage to explode, literally, before he walks onto it. I want the FAMU marching 100 to hit the field halfway through, and i want it to rain purple for 'purple rain' and to end it by throwing down the mic stand and having the crowd sing along.

Different Strokes...
... For different folks... Everybody has there own taste in music, right ? personally, I think Prince is in the same class as Nilli Vanilli, but that's just my personal opinion.. Now, if they really wanted to raise some eyebrows, they would have booked KISS to do the halftime show.. Maybe next year the NFL will consider a band that all can enjoy, like AC/DC or GODSMACK

Verbivore writes:

here's my theory
It's black history month. The Superbowl featured 2 black coaches. For the "first time ever," as we have been repeatedly told.

The commission just "had" to have a black artist. Male. hmmm. Michael Jackson's out. And you can't have a black rapper. (don't ask me why, but i'm sure they have lots of studies to "prove" this.)

So, who do they have? of course, PRINCE. He's black, clean (maybe) articulate (well, does he ever speak?), good-looking (debatable, but then people's taste differ) So, Voila! We have a winner.

Of course, being a game played by two mid-western teams, they could have offered someone like Springsteen, or Billy Joel, but he was relegated to "anthem singer." He wasn't black enough.

Didn't someone give a speech a long time ago about not being judged by the color of your skin....?
