two favorite moments:
1. "contrary to rumor, i'd like to take a few questions right now."
2. the gtr solo with his arm around the backup singer's waist.

In my head, I had mixed up "Best of You" with "Times Like These", which is somehow even worse of a song. So I was pleasantly surprised that it was any other song he was covering.

from the lightning that seemed to cue it to how well he played under those circumstances -- fucking hell! i wondered about that one bit after "watchtower," had no idea it was a foo fighters song. maybe he was playing to his audience a bit, playing his hits (mostly) and the rock songs to show he can shred better than stevie ray, et al? i half expected a j.b. song myself.
i also thought he worked with stadium sound really really well, and foregrounding the vocals, drums and guitar seemed intentional, down and dirty style, awesome.
i'd love to hear a record from him where he's just a trio: electric gtr, bass/ keybs, drums. or has he done that and i don't know? bootlegs sounding like that out there somewhere maybe?

[edit] The UndertakerPrince originally intended to give this live CD away free with 1,000 copies of Guitar Player Magazine in 1994, but he was told by Warner Brothers that he couldn't. Some rare copies were leaked and heavily bootlegged.
The album's track list was as follows:
"The Ride" "Poor Goo" "Honkey Tonk" "Bambi" "Zannalee" "The Undertaker" "Dolphin"

For the record, that was a great performance by any measure. Not Prince's greatest, not the greatest I've ever seen him (live or otherwise) but dood certainly backed up his rep pretty fucking well.
This reminds me of that thread when he tore it up on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on VH1, and the haters who cling to the fact that they'd heard better, they'd heard him better, etc.

Here's how great that halftime show was: I watched it with a super-bowl party crowd of family & friends of all ages, most of them not Prince fans or even especially music lovers, and the room was spellbound. My friend's 3-year-old seemed not to be paying attention, but at the climax of Purple Rain he held up his toy, air-guitar style, and stuck his fist in the air like a rock star, like he could *feel* the attitude somehow. Everybody applauded.

• Prince? The artist formerly known as &*$%(!@?
• How many of the 75,000 ticket holders and 1.3 gazillion television viewers, do you think, can name even one song by &*$%(!@?
• Zero, would be the answer to that.

here's my theoryIt's black history month. The Superbowl featured 2 black coaches. For the "first time ever," as we have been repeatedly told.
The commission just "had" to have a black artist. Male. hmmm. Michael Jackson's out. And you can't have a black rapper. (don't ask me why, but i'm sure they have lots of studies to "prove" this.)
So, who do they have? of course, PRINCE. He's black, clean (maybe) articulate (well, does he ever speak?), good-looking (debatable, but then people's taste differ) So, Voila! We have a winner.
Of course, being a game played by two mid-western teams, they could have offered someone like Springsteen, or Billy Joel, but he was relegated to "anthem singer." He wasn't black enough.
Didn't someone give a speech a long time ago about not being judged by the color of your skin....?

The subsequent buzz — and news that Prince had covered the Foo Fighters' recent hit ''Best of You'' — prompted lead singer Dave Grohl to seek out the show on YouTube the next day.
''Having been a massive Prince fan my whole life, I was flattered beyond words,'' says Grohl. ''What an honor to be covered by one of your heroes!''
