Well, Greatest Overlooked Band of the Late '80s/Early '90s perhaps. Someday someone will put together an Ambitious Lovers comp that will truly blow some minds. Additionally, I have to add that "It Only Has to Happen Once" from Greed is one of my favorite love songs by anyone ever.

I interviewed Lindsay about two or three years ago, and, while we never specifically discussed AL, I got the distinct impression that was he was strictly a solo artist now. I think he has even worked with Peter Scherer here and there, but not as Ambitious Lovers.

I was ruminating about Arto just the other day.

Too few people are posting here. Lust ("The very idea!") is my favorite, but all three are very fine. Too bad they didn't get through all seven sins.

I'm a big fan. "Let's Be Adult" is awesome; "Love Overlap" from the second one is aces. Just two great tracks out of many. I'm also, of course, an admirer of Arto's solo records, and Peter Scherer's Very Neon Pet is among my most-played records of the '90s.

you picked my favorite off Mundo, Alex. "Q Samba" really does what many have attempted and few pulled off--funky for real and just plain beautiful.

NY Times on Ambitious Lovers' Edgy Brush With Popularity
I like them better in the abstract than in the execution. Hate the way the records sound, hate the "synth bass" (Greed and Lust--the first one's ok. Was Scherer less involved on Envy?). Love DNA and Arto's post-Amb. Lovers solo records.

I always thought the "pop" in songs like "Love Overlap" was truly shitty pop inspired by the likes of Paula Abdul. Which of course is awesome.

via wiki:

"Most of their albums featured appearances from many prominent musicians, including guitarists Marc Ribot, Vernon Reid and Bill Frisell; Brazilian music legend Caetano Veloso; percussionists Nana Vasconcelos and Joey Baron; bassist Melvin Gibbs; and Nile Rodgers, who came to fame with '70's funk icons Chic.."
