sub-question: is Pere Ubu post-punk or art-rock, and is your reason based on chronology, geography or sound?

pere ubu are pre and post and art and punk

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

Just like Roxy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

and rock

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

Roxy Music kick the shit out of Pere Ubu. Stranded is, like the best thing ever!. And Also actually the best thing ever.

Roxy Music wins this by a lot for me. Ubu's best records by far are those few early singles.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

i love them both but roxy definitely have more albums that i love.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

for Ladytron and Mother of Pearl alone!

sub-question: is Pere Ubu post-punk or art-rock, and is your reason based on chronology, geography or sound?

they are both and neither, simultaneously. my reason is based on all and none of the above.

and i'd have to go with roxy music, by a (fashionably coiffed) whisker. while both bands started out with an untouchable series of lps, and both edged ever closer to crapulence over time, pere ubu seemed to lose the plot more dramatically than roxy did (song of the bailing man, worlds in collision, etc.).

how 'bout ts: brian eno vs. allen ravenstine?

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

i love both band's debuts a ton, but even there i would pick roxy probably. just based on how many times i've played both of them. i would die for final solution though. or carve the lyrics on my arm. i would kill for it. but it's pretty much the only ubu i would kill for. NOT TO DISCOUNT HOW AWESOME FIRST UBU ALBUM IS CUZ IT IS AND SO IS DUB HOUSING, but roxy had too many great songs when all is said and done.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Scott speaks for me (except for the dying and carving parts).

Andy_K (Andy_K), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

(And killing)

Andy_K (Andy_K), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

Murderer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

if i had to choose between the musical output of the state of ohio in the 70's and roxy music though, i would have to choose the buckeye state. but it takes a whole state to beat them!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

i should also point out that love is the drug is one of my favorite dub house songs.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

Roxy for me.

There are times when listening to Pubu, that I think on the whole, David Thomas's contributions (i.e. hysterical wailings) are detrimental to their sound.

Phil Knight (PhilK), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

what Tim said. Now if you were talking first three singles, I might have to go for Ubu.

sleeve (sleeve), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

Ordinarily I'd say Roxy without a blink but at the moment I think I'm in an Ubu frame of mind because they're grubbier and awkwarder and because I feel like somehow David Thomas' relationship to Rock and Pop and Vaudeville is more fraught and egocentric than Bryan Ferry's is. But these feelings are always temporary and might change tomorrow and Roxy are a more consistent love affair I guess. It's not a competition I'd want to judge tho.
