I finally got around to picking up the first Os Mutantes album. I like it a lot, now what should I get next? Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso? any recommendations?

Get yourself a funk carioca conpilation, if you can find them

Chupa-Cabras, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Tropicalia comp/collaboration is essential, as is Veloso's self- titled album from 1967 (the one with "Alegria, Alegria" et al). And there's lots more where those came from.

lee g, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

get the second os mutantes album because it's even better than the first!!! also, in addition to the two you mentioned, i really like gal costa's 1969 solo album (called gal, i think?) which is similar in tone and um, psychoticity, to the mutantes records.

dave k, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

get everything!!!

geeta, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, just buy anything by Mutantes, Veloso, Costa, Gilberto Gil, and Tom Ze that was released before 1974 or so and it's hard to go wrong.

Of course, tons of great Brazilian music, but your post seemed to indicate a specific interest in Mutantes-type stuff.

lee g, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The second Os Mutantes album!

Tom Ze.

Jorge Ben.

J, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"THERE IS tons of great Brazilian music," that is.

lee g, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the first gilberto gil album (1968) will kill you twice. you will not be able to resist the urge to dance wildly around the room, furniture be damned. the second and third Os Mutantes albums aren't bad either.

tyler, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the only song that i have ever heard by those guys is "Bat Macumbra," and its quite possibly one of the most fun tropicalia songs i've had the pleasure of listening to.

Brock K., Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Both Gilberto Gil self-titled albums are fabulous. Gal Costa's first two albums are great. The third(?) Caetono Veloso album (the one with "Tropicalia") is great. The first four Os Mutantes albums are all good (2nd is probably the best).

If you want a decent beginning point, there is a compilation called Tropicalia: Ou Panis Et Circencis which has tracks by all these folks plus Nara Leao and some songs written by Tom Ze. Only "Panis Et Circencis" is from the first Mutantes album.

Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 are nothing like Os Mutantes, ofcourse, and the're terribly bland but more than likeable none-the-less.

philT, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree totally about Tom Ze. He was on the first Tropicalia record and is still making 'out there' music today. No one has yet mentioned Secos e Molhados (which translates as: The Dry and The Wet), who are from the same school of gentle Brazilian psychedelia as Mutantes. Their singer, a cross-dressing falsetto named Ney Matogrosso has also released loads of solo material that I've yet to check out but that some people swear by. I have Secos e Molhados' self-titled album and it's fine. Other heirs to the Mutantes Braz-psych legacy are: Raul Seixas (hairy 70s rock), Cazuza (as Raul Seixas but more thoughtful), Titas, and best of all, Titas' lead singer Arnaldo Antunes, whose solo stuff mixes concretist poetry with odd tunes and occasional screams. Not forgetting Caetano's 70s stuff, e.g. the self-titled one with London London, Cinema Transcendental, Circulado and others. Milton Nascimento's 'Club da Esquina 2' might appeal to you. I tend to recommend that record to anyone, anyway!

I think Chupa-Cabras is referring to DJ Cliffy's new compilation entitled Black Rio, which is way cool. If you want to go down the Brazilian funk route choose this over Brazil Funk Volume One, which is badly disappointing. Alternatively just buy any Jorge Ben album between 1968 and 1978. I've just bought 'Africa Brasil' and it's storming.

Daniel, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex: We're talking about the same Veloso album (his second), with "Tropicalia," "Alegria, Alegria," and other classics. Guess that counts as two strong recommendations.

lee g, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh is that his second. Yeah, I'd strongly recommend it. His first is supposed to be more conventional sounding, but I haven't heard so I'm not sure.

There was a great boxed set which was the first Costa and Mutantes albums, the second Gil and Veloso albums, and the Tropicalia collection that is fantastic, too.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

CV's first album, Domingo, is full-on late-period bossa nova from a dedicated Joao Gilberto acolyte. It's really nice (Gal Costa guests on it too), but it sounds pretty staid compared to the breakthrough he was getting ready to make.

lee g, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

has anyone ever heard the solo stuff by the woman from os mutantes (rita lee?)? I remember hearing that there was one really great LP from just after she left the group, but I haven't seen it anywhere.

fritz, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YES! Rita Lee made two solo albums that I know of - and possibly more. The first is a lovely, lush, easy piece of tropicalia, with Rita looking beautiful and pensive on the front, c.1972 I think. The next is completely fucking insane. On the front is a scary, scary caricature of Rita. And within you will find ridiculous prog guitar solos, moogs galore, psychotically treated vocals...pretty much every psych-rock trick in the book, but really, properly mentalist. It's great. I can't remember what either of these are called (cuz I just copied them onto one CD and wrote 'Rita Lee' on it) but you should get them both.

Oh, and the Caetano/Gil live album rules.

Ondes Martenot, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rita Lee, the front singer from Os Mutantes released some interesting solo records in the late seventies. They were full of weird new wave/tropicalia fusion. After that, she went mainstream, became a brazilian top celebrity and her records became less interesting and more commercial. Her last album was released only a few months ago and it´s a collection of covers from The Beatles (some of them in English; others in Portuguese).

carlos, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

About the question: The next thing should be the first 4 Mutantes albums. (don't follow to the fifth! they become in a pathetic progressive band!).

And then, Caetano veloso's Album recorded in London , where included a fantastic song called "london, london" (in english).

About the answers: Rita lee recorded tons of bad albums after Os mutantes. Tons!

Oh! and following the southamerica psych/beat : try to find a copy of "LA conferencia del toto's bar" , from teh uruguayan band The Shakers. it's pretty cool (not so acid as Mutantes, but nice)

Marcos, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rita Lee currently writes a column for Leros, Brazilian magazine in London, and it's very witty and silly. I'm trying to track down a song of hers called Doce Vampiro. Anyone know which album it's from and whether the rest of the album is as lovely as that track?

Daniel, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was talking more about the Miami Bass like funk try the Furacao 2000 compilations for a sample here

Chupa-Cabras, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh you mean THAT kind of funk. The scary 'baile funk' stuff. Not sure about the connection with Os mutantes, but it is a fascinating scene. What is it about Flamengo that gives rise to so many songs?

Eu quis cantar
Minha canção iluminada de sol
Soltei os panos sobre os mastros no ar
Soltei os tigres e os leões nos quintais
Mas as pessoas na sala de jantar
São ocupadas em nascer e morrer
Mandei fazer
De puro aço luminoso um punhal
Para matar o meu amor e matei
Às cinco horas na avenida central
Mas as pessoas na sala de jantar
São ocupadas em nascer e morrer
Mandei plantar
Folhas de sonho no jardim do solar
As folhas sabem procurar pelo sol
E as raízes procurar, procurar
Mas as pessoas na sala de jantar
Essas pessoas na sala de jantar
São as pessoas da sala de jantar
Mas as pessoas na sala de jantar
São ocupadas em nascer e morrer
I wanted to sing
My sunlit song
I dropped the cloths on the masts in the air.
I dropped tigers and lions in backyards
But the people in the dining room
They are busy being born and dying
I made do
From pure light steel a dagger
To kill my love and I killed
At five o'clock on Central Avenue
But the people in the dining room
They are busy being born and dying
I ordered to plant
Dream leaves in the manor garden
The leaves know how to look for the sun
And look for roots, look for
But the people in the dining room
These people in the dining room
Are the people in the dining room
But the people in the dining room
They are busy being born and dying

I managed to track down an original mono 2nd album, it was cheap but advertised as "P" but it was fine and I recorded it to disc and did click removal, and the result was great.

Eventually, her popularity extended beyond Brazil. She performed in Portugal, England, Spain, France and Germany. In 1988, the British newspaper Daily Mirror revealed that then-Prince Charles admired her song “Lança Perfume” and considered her his favorite singer.

Wow, she wrote a lot of books too, incl. autobio---not seeing any English editions so far, but these look great:https://www.amazon.com/stores/Rita-Lee/author/B0BZW35HW2?ref=ap_rdr&store_ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=true

Would definitely like to have her autobiography (English), that would definitely have some stories, and her side of the ones I have seen…

Mark G, Wednesday, 10 May 2023 09:44 (two years ago)

Oh, and I take it there’s not been News at Ten or Newsnight coverage?
