Eve (the rapper) - classic or dud?

I read Eve's got a new album coming out this spring, I wonder if I'm the only one anticipating it? She doesn't seem to get much props here, but I think all of her albums have been solid both beatwise and lyricwise. Especially the first one, which is still among my personal top 20 rap LPs with all of its feminist aggression and killer synthetic beats by Swizz.

Her new single can be heard here. It isn't exactly mind-blowing (not awful either), but I'll most likely be checking out the album once it's out. So let's talk about Eve.

I like the song with T.I. and Swizz, although it's been out for a few months now, I kinda doubt it'll be the single. Eve always sounds pretty good, whether w/ Ruff Ryders, the Roots, or Dre, but with her on Aftermath now who knows when she'll drop. I think the fact that she stopped putting out records for a while to do a sitcom (which was cancelled) killed her career momentum, though.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Monday, 5 February 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

Was the sitcom any good, it was never shown here?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 5 February 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

I love Eve. Scorpion is one of my favorite albums ever. I still don't think she's topped "What Y'all Want" though and I keep hoping she will. i.e.

The audacity of even askin me
for ass
I laugh
This bitch is fast and free

(Plus the beat - ga-ga- going!!)

Elsa Svitborg (tracerhand), Monday, 5 February 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

isn't she dating the son of some mad dictator?

roger goodell (gear), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't like Scorpion as much as the first album or Eve-olution. The first half is strong, and "Who's That Girl" is probably the best pop song she's ever done, but the beats get weaker as the album progresses, and Eve ventures into the worst song subjects ever, i.e. how terrible it feels to be a millionaire pop star. Plus the "No No No" remake was totally pointless, since it sounds pretty much the same as the original, except that Eve ain't no Dawn Penn.

Eve-olution, on the other hand, is as good as poppy rap in the 00's gets. There's only one weak tune ("As I Grow"), Eve's excels in both being bitchy and confessional, and there's two wonderfully catchy club tunes in a row ("Irresistible Chick" and "Party in the Rain"), neither of which was even a single.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

Agreed on "No No No" but I love every other song on Scorpion. Don't like the beats on Eve-olution as much.

'Let Me Blow Your Mind' alone makes her classic.

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

FUCKING DUD. I can probably name only 5 good female rappers/MC's EVER.

brightscreamer (brightscreamer), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

your loss.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

She's classic. I like the sort-of-throwaway "Gangsta Lovin'" a lot.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 04:09 (eighteen years ago)

Sleeve - enlighten me.

brightscreamer (brightscreamer), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

I think you might snark at some of my choices and/or already have dismissed them but....

Fannypack gals (really only on See You Next Tuesday, I think they have loads of potential)

Queen Latifah's older stuff

Monie Love

Roxanne Shante

Eve

Salt-n-Pepa

D-Fyne

So that's six off the top of my head, and the thing is, I probably know about/have/own less hiphop than any other genre I talk about on here. I'm sure other people could list a lot more.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 04:23 (eighteen years ago)

see, proof of my rap/hiphop cluelessness is that I forgot Missy E.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

and while I'm on this thread, "Eve Of Destruction" rules.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 04:26 (eighteen years ago)

None of your choices have ever been considered innovators or released any classic albums. Please don't say Missy Elliott is groundbreaking.

brightscreamer (brightscreamer), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 04:29 (eighteen years ago)

what would your five be?

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 04:32 (eighteen years ago)

is brightscreamer's position "girls are no-talents/generally can't rap" or what? that's how you're comin' off dude. roxanne shante, latifah & salt-n-pepa were all broke ground and made classic records which pretty much any mc would acknowledge I'd think

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

If there are not quite as many groundbreaking female rappers as male ones, surely that is because of rap's hypermasculinity, which probably discourages most women for ever grabbing the mike, rather than some essential inability in women to rap.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 07:43 (eighteen years ago)

You are a powerhouse of reason.

Eve's great. Unfortunately I've read this thread and I now have to go shoot my face off.

Missy Elliot has tons of classic albums! Your talk of innovators and groundbreakingness is zzzz.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

I'm honestly not sure what my list would be outside of Heroin (sp?) from Juggaknots and Jean Grae. Not that they've done wither of the things I mentioned, but they can easily hold their own with some of today's MC heavywaights. Salt-n-Pepa, on the other hand, would get laughed out of an MC competition. Don't make me seem like a sexist when they are the ones that were perpetuating the bullshit sex seperatism in hip-hop by portraying themselves as laughable arm-candy.

FWIW, Missy is fucking CLASSIC, but she'd have never been a household name without Timbaland. Also, her MC'ing ability is rather questionable.

brightscreamer (brightscreamer), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

either*

brightscreamer (brightscreamer), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

LOL @ heavywaights. Fuuuuck...it's early.

brightscreamer (brightscreamer), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

a few good songs, but mostly dud (or at least not really worth remembering)

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

this is why we can't have nice things (like rap threads)

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

wtf "laughed out of an mc competition"? hahaha

salt n pepa were real pips, tons of great singles, fly and cute as hell.

nobody's mentioned MC Lyte yet so I will. She was/is fantastic.

I like Eve. Even though her show isn't as good as Girlfriends.

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Someone play "Shoop" for M@tt plzthnxbye.

dude's bein' a dick about it but he's kinda got a point

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

lil kim's a really good rapper

Sym Sym (sym), Thursday, 8 February 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

three years pass...

vh1 is running a behind the music of eve which they apparently made this year, for some reason

J0rdan S., Sunday, 29 August 2010 22:17 (fifteen years ago)

i mentioned eve last night when my friends began applying temporary tattoos to their breasts

teledyldonix, Sunday, 29 August 2010 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it was pretty weird how the last run of hip hop Behind The Music episodes was like T.I. 50 CENT LIL WAYNE DMX and....Eve

some dude, Sunday, 29 August 2010 22:22 (fifteen years ago)

the wayne one was really good, haven't seen the others

J0rdan S., Sunday, 29 August 2010 22:29 (fifteen years ago)

weird thing about this even one is that it has some footage of a sit down with DMX & i'm not really sure how VH1 wrangled that

J0rdan S., Sunday, 29 August 2010 22:30 (fifteen years ago)

i thought the Wayne one was dumb -- like in terms of logic and chronology they made a total mess of trying to explain his career or why he was successful or even what order things happened in. like even beyond a "lol it's vh1 of course they don't understand mixtapes" kinda thing.

some dude, Sunday, 29 August 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

the dmx one is crazy, i didn't know he was smoking crack since he was 14 o_0
