S/D: "Black Power Free Jazz" ?

So I'm crate digging on the floor of the local shop and I guess the clerk thinks he's alone because he puts on some incredible free funk freakout that wouldn't normally get play at this time of day.

As he walks past me I ask him what's playing and he (heavily lidded and a little slurred) says "[INCOMPREHENSIBLE NAME OF ARTIST]...free jazz...some real heavy black power shit, man."

I remember lots of horns and heavy downlow bass, but obviously this covers a lot. Can anyone recommend anything in this vein, though? Phil, I know this is your territory...

Nation Time is exactly what I thought of when I saw this thread title, and teenage quiet is exactly right about how badass it is.

Yeah "Funky Donkey"...not so much "black power", but def lots of horns and heavy bass. Very funky.

Black Unity by Pharoah Sanders
-- sexyDancer (jjjjjjjjjjjjj...), February 5th, 2007.

this was my thought, too; pharoah sanders' name seems easier to render incomprehensible than joe mcphee's

It definitely wasn't Attica Blues that was playing, but that is a great fucking record.

It sure sounds to me like you're describing Nation Time. As far as recommendations, Pharoah's Live At The East and Izipho Zam are my favorites of his late 60s stuff, followed by Thembi and Summun, Bukmun, Umyun. I've never been a big Karma or Tauhid fan. Also, Archie Shepp's The Way Ahead kicks lots of ass, as does The Magic Of Ju-Ju and Blasé and Live In Antibes.
