ANYWAYS. he played "Wishing Well" by Terrence Trent D'arby and i've totally been grooving on it (never was a fan in the past) and i've been trying to convince people that even though it came out in 87, it's a 90s song.
when people are reviving the 80s, they include early synthpop and postpunk, all things that started in the late 70s. even if they're not actually from the 80s, they created the blueprint for what was to come and so can be included.

I think I understand what you're saying, but Cee Lo hasn't released anything as far left-field as TTD. And while Terence's "artistry" cost him most of his audience and untold millions, Cee-Lo actually gained quite a bit by changing up styles.

Acid house was and 80s trend. However, it was the beginning of electronica, which was very much a typical 90s phenomenon.
OK, you could argue that Kraftwerk etc. were also the beginning of electronica, but they influenced synthpop just as much as they influenced electronica.

Agreed. Very archetypical late 80s. Lots of FM synths and "hard" synth sounds.

I don't know when the 90s revival began but it is definitely happening. The secondhand price of the Yamaha DX-100 is going way up, and it is not because people suddenly have a passion for recreating "Nude Photo", but rather because it integrates well with a talkbox for emulating "No Diggity" and "California Love". Soon a shitty 4-op FM synth with minikeys will be able to pay my rent in new york city!

yeah but synth prices are generally going up. the price of an sh-101 for example has doubled in the past few years (my brother got one for £200 in 2006)

My local 70s soul jams station converted last week to New Jack Swing and 90s rapnb type of shit and I am the happiest man on earth.

yeah synth prices are going up but mostly on things that are actually good. I can't justify spending $5000 on a JP8 but it is at least a JP8! The DX100 will soon be as much as a DX7, which doesn't make any damn sense without the "talkbox" craze. Its like the SH-1 becoming more expensive than the SH-5 or 7. (SH-101 prices have always been a bit silly to me. I like the SH-2 a lot more, though maybe I shouldn't say that as I don't own one right now and don't want to drive up prices)

"The Wedding Singer" came out about ten years ago so we're due for similar movies that are all about LOLing the 1990s.
And we're only a few years away from countless grunge and "alternative" bands that were never that great to begin with being anointed as "classic." Pearl Jam should break up now and pretend they haven't been even trying for the last ten years.
And decades can sometimes be defined by their closing. I mean the "sixties" didn't really start until about 66-67, in terms of social change. I remember reading an astounding statistic that said that the number of Americas who thought pre-marital sex was immoral went from about 70% to 36% between 1966 and 1972-73, and it wasn't just young people whose mind was changed on the subject but older folk as well. That just amazes me.

66-67, in terms of social change.
Huh? What about civil rights?
― kornrulez6969, Saturday, 3 January 2009 02:15 (sixteen years ago)
I think he meant "hippies" of the late 60s, to the kids who wore collared shirts and sweaters to Rolling Stones concerts in like ... 64-65.
― burt_stanton, Saturday, 3 January 2009 03:32 (sixteen years ago)
all of this boils down to people lazily categorizing music by decades. it's a pretty dismissive trend, and it leads to much confusion and innacuracy for the generations to follow

Apparently, every single sound in this demo was generated by an SH-2. Color me impressed.
