I think "Porterville" is a great song myself, with a mysterious plotline about a guy who had to leave town because of his father's bad rep...as for the band itself, it catches them at a transitional period...this was one of their last singles as "the Golliwogs" before it turned up on the first Creedence album, and while it's less garagey than earlier Golliwogs 45's, it's not quite the "swamp-rock" sound they became known for...they kinda gradually eased into that on the second one, BAYOU COUNTRY, and by album #3 (GREEN RIVER) the sound was already fully formed.
