Are there really enough cases of a song being 'robbed' of #1 spot to justify an exercise such as itshouldhavebeennumber1.co.uk?

this is the question

potentially good for Oasis who of course have never had a #1 single and would really benefit from this sort of publicity and attention*. but who else? Deee-Lite? Sex Pistols? would enough people be bovvered?

How can you "rob" a number 1 spot? A number 1 spot doesn't measure anything but popularity, which I'd say it does accurately. No song is less worthy because it only made number 2 or 37.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

What a witless waste of energy and a potentially useful idea.

actually it measures number of copies sold.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

Exactly, which is all the new "system" does too, only it uses a much greater scope of what is sold. Popularity will win out, and popularity will be shown to suck.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's a fine idea and you're pissed off because you didn't think of it first, right?

naw, it doesn't. you don't have to own something to like it.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

In any case, as we all know, the last 20 years of singles charts have been less to do with what has sold best but what has been promoted best.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's a fine idea and you're pissed off because you didn't think of it first, right?

wrong as usual TBTIILXH, tho i know you're still bitter because you didn't think of Popular first.

i think the idea is pretty contrived and will not actually cater to many people's idea of 'justice' re the pop charts. i suppose it will cater to rockism by concentrating on already famous 'gallant losers' if not pedantry wrt focussing only on singles that stalled at #2. i'm being pessimistic but realistic here. at best it may result in top ten positions for already celebrated but underperforming in the chart indie anthems (love will tear us apart etc.). but i doubt that poor Sash! is rubbing his hands with the anticipation of potential vindication.

I think Popular is an excellent idea, and well done to Tom for starting and continuing it. I have absolutely no feelings of envy or animosity towards Tom at all, largely because he has all the open-mindedness, approachability and good humour which you so sorely lack.

If you think the number two idea could have been done better, of course, then you are entirely at liberty to start your own website where you can say that Sash! is the greatest ever pop star, the sky is green, &c.

potentially good for Oasis who of course have never had a #1 single

Plenty of their singles went to Number 1 - Lyla, The Importance of Being Idle, Some Might Say, Don't Look Back In Anger, and some other shit ones. Country House still >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Roll With It after all these years.

Obviously - but presumably the new system is going to demonstrate this fact with far greater precision and accuracy.

Otherwise, what would be the point?

killa bee (killabee), Thursday, 8 February 2007 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

"Roll With It" was a great single. In fact, better than most of the Oasis singles that have indeed been number one. The ultimate should-have-been-#1 single by Oasis is of course "Wonderwall" though.

and another one :

"MOZZA FANS STAGE DIGITAL CHART SCAM

Another 'let's abuse new chart rules to get an old track in the top ten'
project. This time Morrissey fans are trying to get 'Life Is A Pigsty' off
his 2006 album 'Ringleader Of The Tormentors' into the singles chart. Fans
are being encouraged to buy the track next week, so to chart a week on
Sunday. Info is at http://www.getmozinthecharts.vze.com. Presumably the
initiative is to make up for the time Morrissey missed out on the top spot
in the singles chart because earlier rule changes regarding digital sales
helped Gnarls Barkley sneak into pole position.

We should all be doing our part to raise awareness of song-on-song crime, whether it be robbery, murder, sexual assault, or just intimidation.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 9 February 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

um....The Smiths never had a number one hit did they? In fact wasn't Irish Blood, English Heart the first number one single Morrisey has ever had?

  • Elvis could've had a number one song in the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's had "Burning Love" not been kept at #2 by someone who only had one number one song in their entire career: Chuck Berry with "My Ding-A-Ling" in 1972.
  • Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Who, and Bob Dylan are all artists whose highest chart position was #2.
  • And holy crap, can you believe that someone took the time to compile this book?
  • Good morning everyone. This is Pleasant Bronson Plains signing off.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 10 February 2007 07:20 (eighteen years ago)

"The Wonder Of You" was a number one in 1970 and "Way Down" was a number one in '77.

The sad thing here is that despite having (in most cases written and) recorded "Roll Over Beethoven", "Thirty Days", "Too Much Monkey Business", "Brown Eyed Handsome Man", "You Can't Catch Me", "School Day", "Carol", "Back in the U.S.A.", "Little Queenie", "I'm Talking About You", "Let It Rock", "Maybellene", "School Days", "You Can't Catch Me", "Memphis Tennessee", "Johnny B. Goode", "Rock and Roll Music", "Nadine," "No Particular Place to Go" and "You Never Can Tell" (to name but a few), Chuck Berry only actually had one number one and when he did it with a novelty song.

Am I not right in saying that Cliff Richard had at least one number one in the 50's, 60's, 70's 80's and 90's

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 10 February 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, but he is Cliff Richard so they don't count.

I Tried to Use My Cock as a Bong (noodle vague), Saturday, 10 February 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

But surely if Cliff was number one then (in most instances) someone else was being robbed?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 10 February 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

He is starting to get in a hurry to have his 00s number one though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 10 February 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

Songs that Cliff Richard has kept off number one:

"The Milennium Prayer": Artful Dodger Featuring Craig David - Re-Rewind the Crowd Say Bo Selecta

"Living Doll" (ft the Young Ones): Sam Cooke - Wonderful World

"We Don't Talk Anymore" BA Robertson - Bang Bang

    "Congratulations" Tom Jones - Delilah

"Summer Holiday" The Beatles - Please Please Me

"The Young Ones" Mr Acker Bilk - Stranger On The Shore, Chubby Checker - Let's Twist Again

"I Love You" The Drifters - Save the Last Dance For Me

"Living Doll (original)" - Lonnie Donnegan - Battle of New Orleans

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 10 February 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

As a rough comparison, songs that Oasis have kept off number one:

"Don't Look Back In Anger" Robert Miles - Children

"The Hindu Times" N'Sync - Girlfriend

"The Importance of Being Idle" Rihanna - Pon De Replay

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 10 February 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

"Summer Holiday" The Beatles - Please Please Me

This is the worst offence, in spite of "Summer Holiday" being among his better songs.

"Don't Look Back In Anger" Robert Miles - Children

Although this was in 1996, during the period in which almost all UK #1 songs entered the list at #1. And "Children" sold considerably better than DLBIA (as did also "Wonderwall" btw.)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 10 February 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

"The Wonder Of You" was a number one in 1970 and "Way Down" was a number one in '77.

Sorry. I should've mentioned that I was speaking of US charts.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 10 February 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

"Sorry. I should've mentioned that I was speaking of US charts."

I may be wrong but I wouldn't have imagined that Deee-Lite, Sex Pistols, Oasis or The Smiths ever troubled the US charts too much.

I am surprised by the even greater injustice that Chuck Berry apparently didn't fare any better over there than he did here 'though; and that Elvis was apparently more popular over here in the 70's and didn't even manage to get to Number 1 on a nostalgia ticket when he died (how did "Way Down" fare in the US charts?).

How much has Cliff bothered the US charts? Did you perhaps have the sense to start ignoring him once he started god-bothering?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Sunday, 11 February 2007 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

I think they ignored him long before that.

I believe "Devil Woman" was his only hit there.

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 11 February 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

Presumably someone managed to convince him that there was no need for him to give up his career because he wasn't quite as crude, as sexy, or as big a threat to anyone's daughter as he seemed to believe.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Sunday, 11 February 2007 09:49 (eighteen years ago)

Like he was ever gonna be a threat to anyone's daughter.

Songs Eminem has kept off number one:

"The Real Slim Shady" Samantha Mumba - Gotta Tell You

"Lose Yourself" Cheeky Girls - Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum)

"Just Lose It" Destiny's Child - Lose my breath

"Like Toy Soldiers" Elvis Presley - Are You Lonesome Tonight?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 February 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I'm the only one who thinks the original link was a viral Oasis/record label thing? Anyway, it's been up for a while, and if Chris Moyles can only get a song in the top 40 I doubt one website that doesn't have a targeted blast week can make any impact whatsoever.

Close, it was for a digital download company. Roll With It didn't even get top200 in the end (to give you an idea of how bad that is, the song at no187 sold 659 copies)

I think you mean "Billie Jean" - it was #1 for 7 weeks, "Beat It" for only 3 weeks. (They were separated by Dexys' one-week reign at the top!)

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 23 February 2007 04:09 (eighteen years ago)

But "Roll With It" is a great song. The closest Oasis have ever been to sounding like The Beatles, a band they otherwise don't sound as much like as they like to claim themselves.

Creedence had eight #2 hits ! (Or five, if double-"A" Sides don't count.)
If I had an hour to spare, I'd determine just which songs robbed 'em of that elusive #1 spot. And whether or not they DESERVED to.
