Xgau puts New York Dolls at #1!
Kinda surprised to see Dylan at the top of the list overall, but maybe I shouldn't be.
Thought Waits would be higher up, too.

Can anyone explain to me in layman's terms exactly what is supposed to be so great about TV On The Radio?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

I've been asking that question myself for quite a while.

TVOTR? They have a good producer. And good singers. They seem to think that music can "say" something. I dunno, it's like non-shitty anthemic rock or something. I like stuff where the creators obviously beleive in what they're doing, even if it's misguided.

Is this list of "critics" all of those people who write for papers like the Ames Groupthink-Herald and Traverse City Multisyllabic Didact?

Clever lyrics on occasion. Not necessarily deep or anything, but clever enough so dumb twats can feel smart enough to get it.

Example: "... while all the weekend rockstars are in the toilet practicing their lines."

All together now: "Oooo... He made a cocaine funny."

Disclaimer: This in no way indicts me as someone who enjoys this music. And so, I will go to Tonic right now to get my drink/folk on. There is no metal tonight. I cry into my shot of Jager.

"... while all the weekend rockstars are in the toilet practicing their lines."

I quite like that line. Then again, I'm middlebrow. (Disclaimer: I've barely heard any Arctic Monkeys, one song I think.)

I love the Belle & Sebastian album. Love, love, love it. Loved 'Sinister and 'Tigermilk,' at the time. But rarely have I heard a songwriter transform the way Murdoch has from the sadness/melancholia obsessed, injured narcissism of the earlier songs to the more generous, warm, curious, and even exuberant songs on 'Life Pursuit.' Plus the excellent rhythm section sounds better than ever. Murdoch's singing is outstanding. There is very little (very, very little. none.) Isobell Campbell. 'Dress Up In You ' is so marvelous and would fit nicely on the underrated 'Fold Yer Hands.' What exactly don't you like about the damn thing, bee?

Stupid fucking rock critics! The new Bob Dylan album is boring as shit!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 8 February 2007 04:53 (nineteen years ago)

The Life Pursuit was my album of the year.
