Not sure if this is public or anything yet but Cayce Lindner, leader of the great SF folk band Flying Canyon, passed away yesterday. This is not a thread for mourning, but for celebrating his music and giving it the credit that it didn't recieve nearly enough of in life. He was a friend and an inspiration to many of us and he will be missed. If you're not familiar with his music, here's a link you may find useful: http://www.softabuse.com/artists/flying_canyon.html

I read that he took his own life. It's very sad. I picked up the album last year and liked it a lot.

My goodness, that's sad to hear. I only knew about him/them via the album from late last year (my AMG review here).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 February 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah. I actually bought the album based on that AMG review. I wasn't sure if you especially liked the album, but I was intrigued by your comment that the album had a "sense of something looming in the background behind calmer feelings." That was on-the-money.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 8 February 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

Well, thank ya. I obviously wasn't trying to pretend to know what's going on in a person's mind, merely looking for the words to describe what I hear. Inevitably, though, I won't be able to hear the album again in the same way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 February 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

That was on-the-money.

I meant this in terms of your comment matching the album's sound, but I guess, in light of events, your comment could have been sadly on-the-money in more than one way.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 8 February 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

Mm, indeed. But I don't want to sidetrack Roger's thread further on that issue; I'd be interested in hearing more about Lindner's life and work in general.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 February 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

There is lots of stuff recorded that wasn't released. Hopefully that stuff will get out there somehow.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 8 February 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

I take it you've seen some of his films? Or were those more private affairs?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 February 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

This is a good way to honor Cayce Lindner, as Roger F says, there is lotsa unreleased stuff.

1) The Goodwill Tapes: I never saw 'em, but Glenn Donaldson of Flying Canyon and the Skygreen Leopards raved about them. And he and I like much of the same stuff. Donaldson's description of the Goodwill Tapes makes 'em sound amazing: http://www.dustedmagazine.com/features/292 (scroll down) I don't know of any releases. Anybody?

2) Some great Flying Canyon live stuff on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/flyingcanyon. Fairly different from the record, more fuzzed out guitar, more rock. Amazing.

3) The Golden Hotel: Another one I've never heard. This was with his bro Sidney, who also heads up Hotel Alexis: http://www.myspace.com/hotelalexis

4) Skygreen Leopards did an entire disc of Lindner brothers tunes: http://www.skygreenleopards.com/sglindex.htm (scroll down) You can actually hear the Leopards covering a Lindner bros tune on their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/skygreenleopards ("Broken Sparrow") It's beautiful.

A major talent was lost. And I hope more music comes out to make more people realize this. I might even start up a fan page, which I've never, ever done before. I feel like he was that good.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Thursday, 8 February 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

You should dude. I'm sure Glenn would help you with that too if you asked him.

And you know, I've never been one to don rose-tinted glasses when someone dies - plenty of creative, talented assholes die and people make them out to be saints among men. But Cayce really WAS a saint among men. So sweet and intelligent. And he was the only other self-described John Milius fan I've ever met. Lord knows you don't meet too many!

Damn.

I adore the live versions of the songs on the myspace page, especially "home." Maybe some more live recordings will surface?
The album is great, too.

The first song -- In The Reflection -- is still one of the best poppy-leaning but sort-of doomy songs of the decade. Parts of this disc are still pretty breathtaking.

two years pass...

Listening to this live version of "home" on the myspace page again.
