zane lowe's radio 1 show is really good.

listened to the whole show on tuesday. considering that it's meant to be an 'indie rock' programme, it really is surprisingly diverse compared to say, the lamacq playlist of 5 years ago. he does some people's heads in i know but i can't quite understand why.

here's the traklist for the show i heard:

A mate of mine knows him from MTV, and says he's a lovely bloke and really sincere and enthusiastic about music. This doesn't stop him coming across as an insufferable pillock on the radio, imho.

its the overly urgent vocal technique where everything is emphasised to the point of pain that just really grates over time, and anyone who calls a section of their show Crowdrocker deserves a serious telling off. but theres no denying he doesplay some music thats definitely worthy. just enough of the vocal exclamation marks please.
(or has he calmed down since i last listened ?)

Huw Stephens is a revelation though, the best DJ on Radio 1 (national radio, maybe) currently going.

Zane Lowe - Mike Yarwood does Tim Westwood.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 8 February 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno about 5 years ago, but I'm pretty sure Goodier/Lamacq before that was never as homogeneous as people make out. Zane's playlist there is about the same mixture, hardly mindblowing, but not all bad.

You've heard that Chris Morris flexidisc where he impersonates Goodier? That was EXACTLY it!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

the token dance records are nearly always some kind of horrible student drum'n'bass or annie mac-esque big beat 'electro' stodge though...

I haven't heard that, wonder what the careerist f*ck is up to these days? (Goodier, not Morris)

Produces, mostly. If you hear "This was a Wise Buddah production for BBC Radio 2" then it's one of his.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

Zane Lowe:Pendulum::Steve Lamacq:Monk and Canatella

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

can't help feeling goodier is less of a twat than this twat.

i wasn't listening five years ago but lamacq in the early/mid nineties did play non-guitar, non-indie musics.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

i hate zane. that cocaine confidence and over-excitment at everything is grating. i know most radio 1 deejays now present like that - everything is GREAT and THE BEST THING EVER and AMAZING but hes just more annoying cos of his pumped up-ness about everything.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

zane lowe's playlist = 1 or 2 token 'urban' tracks + 1 or 2 token 'electronica' tracks + an 'eclectic' mix of NME-friendly indie acts.

= pretty much the same formula as lamacq five years ago!

i liked it the other day though, when kelly osbourne took over the evening session, she played some good stuff.

a nuclear-powered carrot (braveclub), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

What did she play?

Enrique is correct as I recall, when I listened to evening radio 1 all the time circa 95-98 there was a pretty wide range of stuff played, considering what I'd've thought to be their remit at the time. A lot of the actual music may have been pretty shit in retrospect, but probably no more so than a Peel playlist if we're talking backing averages

Hell Hath No Furry (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

He's an easy target. I always thought his MTV2 couch thing was ok. But he's the most astoundingly sycophantic interviewer ever...

"backing averages" = batting averages. Gah

Hell Hath No Furry (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 8 February 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

The Evening Session was never the same after the Rhythm Pals left.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 8 February 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

neither was Top of the Pops, let's be honest here

robin carmody (robin carmody), Friday, 9 February 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

who were the rhythm pals?
or is this a joke i'm not getting?

pisces (piscesx), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

I agree with Bravecub, the balance here is pretty much exactly the same as it was with Lamacq in 97 (ie the last time I was listening to the Evening Session or indeed the radio with any regularity).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

The Rhythm Pals were Kid Jensen and John Peel. I guess you had to be there.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

Mark Ronson's mini mix last night was well done, if a bit obvious.

What did [Kelly Osbourne] play?

The only track I can actually remember was 'Sexual Feeling' by LaToya Jackson, which is one of the most hysterical things I've ever heard.
