Great album; no release.

So there's this band. They made a completely fantastic album--finished, mixed, sequenced, mastered, soup to nuts, maybe even the cover art was done, possibly advance copies even circulated--and then it never came out. The only way it exists is on bootlegs, although maybe one or two tracks snuck out here or there.

What records fit this description?

Douglas, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The first one that comes to mind is the Jungle Brothers' _Crazy Wisdom Masters_--I've only ever heard one track, "Troopin' on the Down Lo," and I understand a couple more came out on a ltd. vinyl 10" EP a few years back. I've been dying to hear it forever.

The Charli Baltimore album that never came out is surprisingly not-bad, too.

Douglas, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I take it you're being very specific so's that you can't name, oh, Smile as a choice? ;-)

Prince has had a few candidates over the years...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was wondering about this very thing the other day. In fact a lot of the same bands in the related thread still apply.

I'm *extremely* pissed off that Snowblind's "The Falls" never came out, and I would LOVE FOREVER anyone who has a complete promo copy they could CDR for me.

electric sound of jim, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure if either have ever gotten a real domestic release but The Conversation (actually this did just get issued on CD by Intrada) and Barbarella soundtracks are pretty good candidates.

Didn't the Large Professor have a much bootleggeed solo album that never saw the light of day? I don't know if it is fantastic though. I also thought that Crazy Wisdom Masters (which got released by Wordsound on a 10-inch EP I think) was just outtakes from J. Beez Wit The Remedy.

Alex in SF, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Puddle's Songs for Emily Valentine. (attn people who run record labels).

hamish, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Supposedly the last Glass Eye album was fantastic, but it never came out. Steve Albini is the source for that tidbit of info, from some interview a few years back. Having seen Glass Eye a couple times and always liking them better live than on record, I can believe it.

Slowdive's PYGMALION not getting released domestically in the US isn't quite the same thing, but since I was listing to this yesterday and it's such a great fucking record I figured I'd bring it up.

doug, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Posies' aborted Eclipse LP was fantastic (and later partially showed up on the At Least, At Last boxed set). It'll probably never see a proper release because the material is now eleven years old and Auer and Stringfellow are much more concerned with other endeavors -- but damn.

paul, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SY's Walls Have Ears? Or was that a concert recording? I don't know. I just know I desperately WANT IT.

nathalie, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bash and Pop (Tommy Stinson of the Replacements' band) had their last album suppressed by the label. I think it was called 7 Seconds. He's now stuck with Axl Rose in the re-constituted GNR.

nickn, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably no one of this forum cares but I'd like to see the albums in Ryan Adams drawer be released. Including the Strokes blues cover album. Not sure if it will ever happen. It's quite sad but those records would definitely be released if he died tomorrow.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(walls have ears was a concert release, miss claeys)

mark s, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was Walls Have Ears it ever release as a CD or vinyl?

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

depends on your definition of released, of course, but i would say:

"any lightweight modern pickup" by Puck.

hey, if anyone knows what i'm talking about; like the band members and so on, it's glorious and i still listen to my cassette of it all the time. why don't you get it out, at the very least on cdr??? (malcom?? - does mark have control over it???)

elizabeth anne marjorie, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Penn made an album for Bell in 1974 called 'Emmet The Singing Ranger Live in the Woods' which has never been released. And Jack Nitzsche's singer-songwriter alb has only just been issued by Rhino, nearly 30 years after it was recorded.

Andrew L, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Elcka's second album has still not come to light. It was recorded and mixed, but I've never heard of any promo CDs.

Any ideas Ned?

Zanny Gognet, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i believe there was supposed to be a Male Nurse album, but i have never ever seen it. guess it would have been posthumous, did guided missile can it?

gareth, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Neil Young - several, inc. Homegrown (some songs available elsewhere), Chrome Dreams (all available elsewhere, but some in different versions) and Times Square (all but one available on either Eldorado or Freedom).

Jeff W, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The second KMD LP only came out recently, didn't it? I haven't yet caught up with it, but it is reputed to be very fine.

The LP Betty Lavette recorded for Atlantic in (I think) '72 came out on a French label the year before last and is total classic genius.

The Prince Jazzbo LP on Studio 1 took something like 15 years to appear. As with so many questions like this, the fairly chaotic nature of the world of reggae has led to untold rumours of lost / unissued / fictional records, e.g. a full Lee Perry / Augustus Pablo LP.

Dribs and drabs of a Subway Sect LP preceding "What's The Matter Boy?" have sneaked out, and it seems that it wasn't as good as "Marquee Moon" after all.

Tim, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and the first Blak Twang LP never really appeared, and is reputed to be very ace.

Tim, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim:

let me know if you track down a copy of "the Falls"

thanks

g, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Last's "Look Again", if only for "Difference" and Jeffrey Lee Pierce's "Jungle Book". On mp3.com.

dan, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any ideas Ned?

Not a clue. I'm surprised Menswear's second album even came out, so I highly doubt this one would.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It doesn't 100% fit the bill, but I can't resist mentioning the Beach Boys' Smile here. Smiley Smile isn't the same thing, though I guess it's more than one or two tracks' worth.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr Grayson Lane: Will do. I've got a promo 4-track EP of tracks from it, plus the unreleased "Easy Girl" single if yer interested..

I was very upset when the last Rosita single never came out. Although I'd be happier with a lifesize poster of Emmy Kate Montrose rather than any of their music (not to say I don't like the music though)

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The five or six Square Root Of Margaret albums that werent released (several reasons Im told but the most imporant is the loss of all their equipment in fire late 98).
The Peter Parkers ongoing saga of an album. And just for curiosity sakes, The Dandy Warhol's "Black Album".

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i second the Rosita thing. they had some fantastic songs and it was a shame that they never got proper releases - still, that's what you get for signing to a beastie boys label.

i would actually like to hear the unreleased third Marion album where its just Jaime and the new fella. i got the three demo tracks off their website when it was online and it was kindve schmindie, but hey, this is Marion we're talking about, not Squarepusher.

and did post-Dickon Orlando ever release anything? i understood there was an album in the pipeline at one point..

Wyndham Earl, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and any of the zillion or so Aphex Twin albums Richard James swears he'll never release because they'd kill music.

Wyndham Earl, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Post-Dickon Orlando? The idea gives me the fear

The The - Pornography Of Despair

Supposedly an entire Talk Talk album

Baxter Wingnut, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex, Crazy Wisdom Masters was the original version of JBeez with the Remedy that got buried by Warners for being too crazy. They took Bill Laswell's name off the credits and got Bob Power in to try and sa(l) vage it. Although in my opinion the resulting mishmash of jazzy "classic" hiphop and allout experimentalism might be more disturbing than the original album itself. That said, some of the ones that got away, ie RaRa Kid or the promo only "Troopin on the down Lo" are just colossal.

I don't know why wordsound don't try and release CWM in whole, it's not like they don't have access to it.

Bob Zemko, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also: Douglas, that 10" wasn't that limited, you'll probably still be able to get a hold of it. Check the Warp or Wordsound sites.

Bob Zemko, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

According to Wordsound's website it is still in print.

Unfortunately their order listing isn't always very reliable.

Alex in SF, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh yeah. Try again Wordsound's site. Silly me.

Alex in SF, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
Further to the stuff above about Snowblind, it appears that Independiente has picked up the ball and will be releasing "Easy Girl" as a single and "The Falls" album in the next couple of months. Hooray!

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The last Hated record is only available as a crappy bootleg, although insh'Allah that will change in the next couple of months.

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the puddle album did come out didn't it? on IMD, but then IMD died so it may have been the briefest of appearances. i did get a taped copy from mike stoodley from the old days on the kiwi-music list, it wasn't that great, though the first song 'terminator' was fab. the puddle should have only made 7" singles.

keith, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Regarding The Falls by Snowblind

Just to wet your appetite here is the track listing

1 Easy Girl 2 Slowly 3 Country 4 Wish 5 Summer In The Sun 6 Remain The Same 7 Cut 8 Haven't Got A Clue 9 Message For Glo' 10 I'll Be There 11 Fistfull Of Dollars

Martin, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So according to what meager information I've been able to scare up, the English band The Lover Speaks submitted an album to A&M which A&M refuses to release and which David Freeman, their frontman, says is "unavailable at any price." But his discography lists it as "self-released." Has anyone heard it or does anyone know anything about it? Interviews with Freeman suggest from his tone that he's kinda bitter/angry about the whole affair, or at least that it had a bad effect on him.

a whole Big Audio Dynamite album sits on Radioactives shelves. 'Entering a New Ride' .. ok its not a classic by any means but for those that like BAD this is a damn fine album .. far better than i ever expected. over and out ..

Captain Beefheart - Bat Chain Puller

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Utah Saints made a second album, which was never officially released, there's only bootlegs available. It isn't the same as their "official" second album, which came out much later.

I'm not sure whether this counts, however, since I'm probably the only one who thinks even Utah Saint's first album was any good.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah doomie the Snowblind album eventually came out on Independiente. But somehow it's status change from "lost classic" to "readily available" killed its mystique a tad..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Elysian Fields' second album recorded between "Bleed your cedar" and "Queen of the meadow" had been refused by a major (Universal I suppose) who finded it too dark. It contains alternate versions of "Black acres" and "Bend your mind" and was produced by Steve Albini.

Sami (Sami), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The Dandy Warhols' _Black Album_. My taped copy is starting to die, and there are hundreds of MP3s whizzing around the net. But my god, I'd love to have a nice, finished, properly mastered version. (THen again, the tape hiss and the stops and starts where generations of bootleggers have had to flip the tape have almost become part of the appeal of the album...)

there is a second Spent Poets album that was recorded and unreleased by whatever label they were on (geffen?). Though it's possibly total shit, the first one is kind of a classic of a sort at least for me.

Yeah, it came out last year. It's called Black Bastards, I think. Anyhow, it is very fine, though I don't like it as much as Mr.Hood. It's darker, but with a title like that, I guess that's to be expected. Sort of how with the Pharcyde, everybody loved the first album because it was fun - and got turned off by the 'new mature' pharcyde for the 2nd album. Anyways, its worth picking up.

Did that Dre-produced King-Tee album "Thy Kingdom Come" album made like eons ago ever come out?

The Puddle's Songs For Emily Valentine has been released by Powertools records, early 2006. A new CD "Playboys in the Bush" is almost ready too. Reviews of Songs For Emily Valentine have been very positive - as if it's a missing historical artifact that explains the past - which in a way it does. The reviews are probably better than they would have been at the time, as people view the '90s through nostalgia tinged ears (ha!)- and borrowing those organs to hear it with is revealing - the arrangements as if they were intended? Brilliant - it was Mike Stoodley's genius to offer as wide a range of (well chosen) tonal effects as possible, record as many layers as we wanted, then insert every phrase that adds to the song and delete the rest - so that sometimes the buzzing silence between the vocals and rhythm section implies all that's needed. So that what was recorded as self-indulent jamming plays like intricate arrangement. 5 of the 13 songs have been released as 7" singles (good notion Keith - if only bands and fans ran more record labels - Andrew from Powertools stuck "Terminator 2" - a song originally written for Snapper - on his latest small-run, magazine-like label compilation) or their modern equivalent, the best track on a compilation CD (Southern Man earned this distinction thrice, tho it wpould be bigheaded of me to claim it the best track on the 3 -CD best-of-all-time-nz-recordings "But I Can Write Songs OK" (Yellow Eye), and it is only the best track on BFM's "Louder" compilation (which would have been #1 if compilations were counted in NZ) because Dinosaur Jnr and the Breeders re-recorded their tracks with amateurish guest vocals (giving BFM tracks that had been issued already, and were only "new" mixes - the Americans' unscrupulous fleecing of the hicks at BFM (completely unrelated to their need to finance drug addictions, no doubt) was The Puddle's good fortune, as "Southern Man" became a nationwide radio hit memories of those days playing a part in the healthy sales for Songs For Emily Valentine now. The original IMD? "release" was only a cover for 15 demo copies and a bit of pocket money - IMD never took orders, which they could not have coped with in any case. Not a real label or release, the Puddle were not involved - it was an accidental spin off from the mastering process. And so on.

Papa Sprain's full-length never saw the light of day...supposedly, it was nothing but a bunch of James Joyce text readings over ambient noise...also, Paddy McAloon is always going on about several Prefab Sprout albums that got stopped at the gate...and, the one-and-only Thieves album never hit the shops, even though it was reviewed by all the rags at the time...(though I think some of it surfaced as a David McAlmont solo release)...
