Why do you care?

jimn (jimnaseum), Friday, 9 February 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

I don't particularly care, but if I read that uffie made a track to dis a message board I at least want to know what's going on there.

Robot Gunslinger (Robot Gunslinger), Friday, 9 February 2007 11:00 (eighteen years ago)

hmm, well it appears it may be related to the uffie vs hollertonix-board row from 2006. info on this is here on erol alkan's forum:

http://www.erolalkan.co.uk/

also the beef-inspired and *filthily* brilliant
'go play with your stickers' UFFIE track is here if u scroll:

http://www.stockholmbeatconnection.blogspot.com/

and yet further background info here:

After the release of Pop the Glock, Uffie’s validity as an authentic performer was put into question by the Hollertronix Message board community that sparked a still unresolved debate. Uffie’s authenticity was challenged because she was a white European transplant rapping over Baltimore Club influenced beats about American urban poor issues she has never experienced (i.e. poping glocks). Curtis Vodka, an Alaskan music producer, originally disliked Uffie for her beats and then remixed “Pop The Glock” which was blogged about even more then the official Ed Banger release. Uffie soon found out about the discussion and the Curtis Vodka remix and decided to openly challenge and debate with Curtis Vodka and other Hollertronix message board participants about her music and her validity as a female rapper. This debate is still largely unresolved. Most notably would be Uffie’s battle with New York mainstay club promoter Roxy “Oxy” Cottontail. Uffie and Curtis Vodka ultimately called a truce but are still not on good speaking terms. Roxy and Uffie still harbor animosity towards each other that was further accented when at Uffie’s New York debut she dedicated “Ready to Uff” to all of the “Hollerboard Haters” which was a small jab to Oxy since she was in attendance that night at the premier. In retaliation Roxy went on to East Village Radio and freestyle dissed Uffie with DJ Aaron La Crate calling out Uffie’s lyrical ability by saying “Uffie are your ready to rap” which is a play on “Ready to Uffs” lyrics. Ironically although Oxy has beef with Uffie who is signed to Ed Banger records, Oxy is still booking DJ gigs for other Ed Banger artists in New York. This has secured Roxy’s position as queen of ironical hipster club promoters. The Hollertronix message board is just happy that there opinion matters in the internet and blogger music world.

wow message board beef for real! like dudes from Philly (and Alaska!) making "Baltimore club" tracks can even say shit about whoever rapping on a Bmore-type beat.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

the funny/sad part is that when I was making crappy Bmore club tracks in my apartment in Baltimore County five years ago I didn't dare put them out because I didn't think I had any right to do so. little did I know!

@Raging Burrito / Azul

kissatlanta.com presents:

Flosstradamus
(Chicago)

Without a doubt Flosstradamus have created an incredible buzz all on their own and have solidified their status as the hot new thing. Their event Straight Flossin' in Chicago is an all out throw-down of ridiculous proportions. DJ's Autobot and J2K combine Juke, Bmore, Crunk, and a myriad of other pop tracks to create sexually charged, sweat-fueled hysteria everywhere they play. In fact, we're a little scared of people falling out during their set. However, forget what I say... just look to the bottom of the post for videos and a 30 min mix mp3 of the boys in action.

However, keeping in line with the way they do their events we want to keep this intimate and concentrated. I'm handing over Raging Burrito to them to get a taste of Straight Flossin' here in Atlanta. I'm even going to make sure there are Jello shots just to make them feel at home. Oh yeah, and we're in Decatur... so this shit ain't stoppin till 4am. Call in to work Friday.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

i saw them once. they were fun i guess. some pretty obvious choices sometimes.

jess if you liked girl talk I can't see why you wouldn't like this. Its not, like, a negative experience. Whats weird to me is their psuedo-celebrity status in the press.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

oh i'm sure i'll enjoy it. i really don't mind all this stuff as music qua music, just the "personalities" most of these dudes project.

racist illustrator for hire (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

or actually not so much the personalities they project as their publicists do.

racist illustrator for hire (dubplatestyle), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, come to think of it, I suppose their choices were on the "obvious" side (Switch, KW Griff, Daft Punk, Ludacris), but still entertaining.

Kid Sister is fun (though maybe not yet as good as Amanda Blank), and she was very nice. They seemed to project no personality at all!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

They seemed to project no personality at all!

thats the problem, isn't it

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

with their artists, i mean, not the DJs.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 9 February 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

OH, well Kid Sister had personality, but the DJs just kind of did their thing - which I usually prefer.

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

I thought Zoo Magazine was a lads mag? Or is there an ironically named hipster mag as well? Uffie is like a living Chris Morris sketch (more-so than that Johnny Tang and the Ting Tang Tung (or whatever) being discussed in that recent zing thread). Still, I really like the vocoder-y sound of "Pop the Glock." And her all-over-the-map accent.

Savannah Smiles, Monday, 10 December 2007 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

Huh. According to her Wikipedia page:

"In November 2007 Uffie recorded the video for her next single, "Hen Fap (It's Something That I Need To Have)", a track based around a sample of "Roll to Me" by Del Amitri. Many believe this track to be part of a reconcilatory gesture from Uffie towards the Hollertronix message board which she had recently beefed with, as Del Amitri frontman Justin Currie is a prominent Hollertronix poster, under the pseudonym De La Mitri"

Uffie is like a living Chris Morris sketch

Explain how

Thinking specifically of Nathan Barley there. Maybe less Morris and more Brooker, considering her bio on Wikipedia reads like a TV Go Home listing.

Savannah Smiles, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

lol

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:37 (seventeen years ago)

Not sure if that's a sarcastic 'lol,' but just to further illustrate:

Anna-Catherine Hartley was born in Miami, but moved to Hong Kong when she was four due to her father's work. The family once intended to spend a year sailing, but a typhoon struck and the family had to abandon ship in the Philippines. She later lived in Fort Lauderdale and Miami, but at age 15 relocated to Paris with her father; greatly preferring the lifestyle, she has lived there ever since.

Her first single, "Pop the Glock", after getting a limited promo release on Arcade Mode in January 2006, was released on French label Ed Banger Records. Both the single (produced by Feadz) and its B-side "Ready to Uff" (produced by labelmate Mr. Oizo) contained elements of electro and rap. Her music has been described as being "often performed in a wannabe English accent" which "have a deliberately staid anti-flow delivery that walks a fine line between electro and nu-skool rap." The release also featured a remix by SebastiAn.

Two more new tracks from Uffie, "Hot Chick" and "In Charge" were first proliferated through audioblogs in July 2006 before appearing on her MySpace page.

It's all pretty "Bad to Have a Bad Uncle."

But I really do like that one song I've heard.

Savannah Smiles, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:44 (seventeen years ago)

Oh right, those Chris Morris sketches that were just unblinking rolls of bland facts and figures

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:57 (seventeen years ago)

What are you talking about/getting at/so dead set on being willfully obtuse about/all worked up over/like, anyway?

Savannah Smiles, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

(or, rather, if your fandom of/friendship with this person (or whatever is happening here) makes it difficult for you to pick up on the Charlie Brooker/"Cunt"-isms of a raunchy jailbait female rapper from Hong Kong/Miami/Paris who raps about popping glocks, strikes pornographic poses for spreads in UK fashion magazines, and boasts a total musical career output of 5 songs (with 7 million MySpace plays), then I'm comfortable giving you the last word in the form of another vague, sarcastic comment and just moving on).

Savannah Smiles, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

Uffie stole my nan's pension

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

And when she walks her dog she always has it piss against the side of Mr Patel's cornershop. It's horrid.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think I've actually heard Uffie more than once or twice in my life, let alone met her, but there doesn't seem to be anything in the biographical material we're dealing with here that's innately objectionable. Also people who go "lol its like real life Nsathan Barley!!" when faced with anything remotely linked to quote-unquote "fashion" are boring

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

That's all I was looking for - some idea of what you were getting at. Sorry to have "bored" you (internet message boarder bored by other nerd internet boarder for citing cult tv show in discussion of obscure internet rap 'star' = very N.B. of you, by the way!). ZZZzzzz, I suppose; fair enough.

Savannah Smiles, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 14:48 (seventeen years ago)
