Songs you love but can't sing because you don't know the lyrics?

Excluding songs sung in a foreign tongue. I'm talking about songs that thwart your attempts to sing along, either because the vocals are buried in the mix, or the singer refuses to enunciate. Or maybe even simply because the MUSIC itself is so compelling that you've never even attempted to listen to the words.

Any?

Why don't you just say 'doesn't enunciate' rather than 'refuses to enunciate'?

Bluto (Mr Happy), Saturday, 10 February 2007 08:28 (eighteen years ago)

About half of each of the first two Pretenders albums. The recent remasters print the lyrics for the first time, and I wasn't even close on "The Phone Call."

Hideous Lump (Hideous Lump), Saturday, 10 February 2007 08:34 (eighteen years ago)

Fine.

Make that "Doesn't enunciate. (Intentionally or not)"

Oh, and BTW, my choice: "She Sells Sanctuary" I know the word "sanctuary" itself is in there; also "and the world" and "keeps me alive" show up frequently. And that's all I know.

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Saturday, 10 February 2007 08:38 (eighteen years ago)

Hm. That one's actually not so hard. Or I could be completely wrong.

When did not knowing the lyrics prevent anyone from singing a song?

I never used to remember half the lyrics to our own songs when I was in bands....

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Saturday, 10 February 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

There's a lyric in REM's Rockville that goes:
"At night I drink myself to sleep and pretend I dont care that your not here with me. Cause its so much easier to..." then there is a phrase Stipes sings that I can never uderstand. Anyone know what it is?

Rock Enro (Rock Enro), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

is that the one that sounds like "(something-something) my problems when I'm too far out to sea"?

Bernard Snowy (sixteen sergeants), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, sounds like "cause its much easier to handle all my problems when I'm too far out to sea."

Rock Enro (Rock Enro), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

edit: "...cause its SO much easier..."

Pretty much all of Loveless.

graf cycliz (graf cycliz), Saturday, 10 February 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

"Close To The Edge" by Yes. Or at least, I haven't got the foggiest idea what the lyrics are about. :)

to scour or to pop? (Haberdager), Saturday, 10 February 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Songs you love but can't sing because the handwritten lyrics are illegible: Talk Talk - last two albums

to scour or to pop? (Haberdager), Saturday, 10 February 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

my serious answer to this question would be The Boredoms - Super Coming

to scour or to pop? (Haberdager), Saturday, 10 February 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

Smashing Pumpkins, "1979" - I barely know any of the lyrics but love the song. Just kinda hum along incoherently.

Adam Harrison-Friday (AdamFriday), Sunday, 11 February 2007 02:24 (eighteen years ago)

Ummm... what am I missing here? Just about every time I Google something about an artist or song (which as an indie distributor is something I do about every 15 minutes, really) I get prompted for sites with lyrics...

What I STILL really want are ALL the lyrics to Dr John's "Gris Gris Gumbo", which we're doing a cover of. After much arduous searching of websites on voodoo and shit, we're down to ONE LINE we can't decipher.

------

Oh the heads that turn
Oh, the heads that turn
Make my back burn
Make my back burn
Oh the heads that turn
And those heads that turn
Make my back burn
Make my back, make my back burn
The sparkle in your eyes

Keeps me alive
The sparkle in your eyes
The sparkle in your eyes
Keeps me alive
Keeps me alive
And the sparkle in your eyes
And the world and the world
Keeps me alive, keeps me alive
The world turns around

And the world and the world
The world
The world drags me down
And the world turns around
Oh the heads that turn
The world and the world, yeah
Make my back burn
The world drags me down
The fire in your eyes keeps me alive

The fire in your eyes keeps me alive
Oh, the heads that turn
Im sure in her youll find
Make my back burn
The sanctuary
And those heads that turn
Im sure in her youll find
Make my back, make my back burn, yeah
The sanctuary

And the world and the world
Yeah-hey...
The world turns around

And the world and the world
The fire in your eyes
The world drags me down
Keeps me alive
And the fire in your eyes
Keeps me alive
Im sure in her youll find
The sanctuary
Im sure in her youll find
The sanctuary

And the world
The world turns around
And the world and the world
The world drags me down
And the world and the world and the world
The world turns around
And the world and the world and the world and the world
The world drags me down

Ah...

Hey-yeah...

And the world
And the world turns around
And the world and the world
Yeah, the world drags me down
And the world
Yeah, the world turns around
And the world and the world
The world drags me down

Sanctuary
Sanctuary
Sanctuary
Sanctuary

PS. I want to use "I Tried to Use My Cock as a Bong" as a lyric... or am I too late?

Any number of Animal Collective songs. Also, if you conveniently ignore the whole "love" thing: 99% of all Clinic songs.
