What do you think? I find it very user-unfriendly so far. Dud.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

You'll get used to it. Also, remember: work in progress.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

i love it. classic. remember it's a work in progress, dude. as keith has explained about 100 times on ILE, the priority now is just getting something that works and is stable.

nu-ILX wasn't meant to go live this quickly, but thanks to jon's tireless diligence in pointing out the security holes and other flaws in the old code, which absolutely nobody else was aware of or had ever discussed, the go-live date was brought forward substantially.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

I had no idea no one liked it!

Alex Forgot His Email Address in SF, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

i am really starting to fucking miss the x-post warning, though :o

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

no x-post warning?

that's seriously going to kill my long-thought out three sentence posts.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

Too much white space makes it hard to skim the new answers thread, and the individual threads. The new way names appears is not as fun. The google search is set up weird--you place a term in a box, but then instead of clicking "search" as I tried to do, you have to click "submit a question". The "search ilx" function has way too much white space and not as much information and detail from prior threads. You have to keep clicking 'next' because the threads are so spread out.

I really do appreciate all the hard work, but sometimes ala "new coke," change is not good.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm, this is weird.

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe you should at least give it 48 hours before you start complaining?

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

I do wish we still had the option to change our display names.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

Please think of it this way, and I will say this once here on this board in the hopes that I will not have to say it again -- the cosmetic changes you see here (and, again, I *must* emphasize this is still a work in progress) are ultimately not as important as the detailed coding changes that are designed to help make the board more secure, more stable and ultimately better to work with as time continues on. Assuming that how the board looks and acts right this second is how it will always be would be an error.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

(That was to curmudgeon, and I'm not trying to be explosively angry at this point but my god people are jumping to conclusions WAY too fast here.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

We are offering constructive criticism ILX style.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

I have to say that there is a very soothing minimalism to this new layout.

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

change is scary people, just breathe deep.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

Ned, that's about the size of it. The bulk of the work went on making sure it was secure, even if that was only from Jon, but largely on making sure it would scale as well as it could, given that we don't have any money for servers.

So far, tonight, we have had 440,000 page hits, with the ILX software using only 0.3% of the CPU. That's good news so far, but it might not last. Fingers crossed. There will likely be some fixing to be done.

Keith, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

I say tonight, obviously you have to adjust that for your timezone. Tonight GMT.

Keith, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

The URL above says "#unread" at the end but it doesn't jump to the unread for me...is it just me or is this on the to-do list?

musically, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

It will if you're logged in...

Keith, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

it needs more boobies..

wesley useche, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

I like it, I really do.

Snowballing, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

I s there any way to link back to sandbox threads? I followed the new method for posting a hyperlink, but when I clicked on my sandbox hyperlink it did not send me to the sandbox but to an all ILE page. Maybe I am doing something wrong?

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

The jump-to-unread feature is really cool (and the no HTML reminder helpful).

I think I'll be used to this soon enough, but I'm definitely going to miss the display name feature. No "hoo got it for steen, vol. 4."

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

need bookmarks

deej, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

i am logged in and it does not jump to unread answers for me

chaki, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

I dig this crazy new style

DavidM, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:49 (eighteen years ago)

need links to 'new answers' etc. at bottom as well as top of board

deej, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:50 (eighteen years ago)

Err...

Keith, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

damn crybabies

blueski, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

i really like the new layout so far...looks cleaner than the old one, better spread out with good use of empty space...it's really nice

stephen, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

any chance of a URL rewriter up in here? ilxor.com/56333 instead of all that CONTROLLER mess up in there, makes it feel more robotic

neustile, Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

the layout is throwing me a bit, but i like the use of white space

it's prettier, more refined, less techy

kind of pleasing overall :-) that's my opinion, good only insofar as superficial opinions go

Surmounter, Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

It's horrible. Total dud.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:29 (eighteen years ago)

Err...

Keith on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 5:52 PM (43 minutes ago)

i mean below the answers box.

deej, Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

not all that great. i'm sure i'll get used to it at some point, though

van smack, Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

all c/d threads should be polls from now on.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

Many thanks for all the work programming and setting up the server. If we are taking a poll, I do not care for this new layout with all the white space -- too much scrolling.

Mark, Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

i don't mind the scrolling at all

stephen, Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

This new ILX board is blowing my mind, man.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 22 February 2007 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

This new ILX board is blowing my mind, man.

Is that a good thing, a bad thing, or just a thing thing.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 22 February 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

it's a snrub thing. you wouldn't understand.

scott seward, Thursday, 22 February 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

why do i keep having to log-in all the time?

scott seward, Thursday, 22 February 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, I was just coming to ask about that. Doesn't it like my cookies?

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 22 February 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

It logs you out after 30 minutes of inactivity for reasons of homeland security.

But it'll remember your post, so if you write a post then fill in your password, it'll post OK. Does fuck with the #unread thing a bit, however.

.stet., Thursday, 22 February 2007 01:58 (eighteen years ago)

has there ever been a website redesign ever, anywhere that anyone here liked?

keythkeyth, Thursday, 22 February 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

Reminders that this is a work in progress = sensible

Encouraging people to catalog the cosmetic and functional elements they don't like, as a helpful guide to how exactly said work might progress to best serve everyone = equally sensible

nabisco, Thursday, 22 February 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

Very sensible.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 February 2007 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

at least it gives one something to talk about

Surmounter, Thursday, 22 February 2007 02:51 (eighteen years ago)

As opposed to that nasty music.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 February 2007 02:54 (eighteen years ago)

True that, Geir. All those early threads with Pinefox going on and on about Mobb Deep are really boring.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 24 February 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

Geir, I am not anti-googler, I just seriously think it's reasonable to prioritize the needs and wants of the existing ILX community (?) which is already pretty big. I am not a native born ILXor anyway.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 24 February 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

I actually like the nu-ILX much more than the old...so there.

SeekAltRoute, Saturday, 24 February 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

Well, occasionally someone like Ramzi comes here as a Googler, and that makes the community better. Those appearances by the likes of Erlend Øye are also good for a laugh, as may even be the case of the appearances of fanatical Michael Jackson or DMB-fans, if kept in small doses.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 24 February 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

As I moaned on the salsa thread, I want more general interest music fans (who also have some interest in salsa and other Spanish language music genres) to post on ILX. More Afropop and southern soul fans would be nice too. Alas, making additional changes in the look of the nu-ilx board may not be enough to bring such new people in (if they even exist).

curmudgeon, Saturday, 24 February 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, you can go back to tech related issues.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 24 February 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

Don't push the river, curmudgeon.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 24 February 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

Would ordinary typical Oasis-fans and Coldplay-fans be just as welcome? :)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 24 February 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

Eh, maybe not, but hell, I say let it all hang out and see what happens.

I get to join the complainers too. Although I'll preface all this by saying I HAVE actually gotten used to all the white space. My eyes aren't hurting anymore. Also, can we have a poll about certain features we'd like to see changed or not changed? That would be nicely clean and democratic wouldn't it?

Also it seems to be going better with the constant logging in stuff. I found I was recognized and already logged in tonight when I didn't expect to be.

Okay so here's my main gripes:

1) I just want a clear way of figuring out where a thread was revived without scrolling needlessly like a dumbarse. Hopefully this isn't a complicated thing to accomplish?

2) I really did like it better when you didn't know who started the threads on the New Answers page. It injected an element of fun mystery into it, and it also kindof said "well the topic is more important than who started it" which I think is really true. It took any bias or prejudice out of the equation. Also there are some threads I started that I no longer feel much of a kinship with at all, so it's like...who cares that I started it? Also I agree it does clutter up the New Answers page. I also liked to be able to see how many total posts to each thread. Big difference between the Dave Matthews thread and something else, obv.

3) Xpost warning is needed but that has been established.

4) I am jealous of other folks who seemed to find cool features of the old ILX that I never even experienced!! Maybe I really missed out! :)

Bimble, Sunday, 25 February 2007 08:02 (eighteen years ago)

Also I'm just plain fed up with the Search function. The allintitle: operator on google used to work. Why doesn't it now? Even the link that says "Direct ILX search" doesn't give me anything. Quotation marks don't make any difference either.

I just feel like if the search function is lost to google inferiority forever, then I can live with that and we can start anew but I would like to have been told that, honestly, months ago, instead of holding out hope of its improvement.

Bimble, Sunday, 25 February 2007 08:22 (eighteen years ago)

Last thing on this topic and which should go without saying:

I would dearly love to reignite the creativity of changeable screen names. Surely the board's security can't be compromised too much by allowing this? It nearly breaks my heart to see Noodle Vague reduced to just...Noodle Vague. Say it isn't so.

Bimble, Sunday, 25 February 2007 08:35 (eighteen years ago)

Does this mean that Comstock Carbinieri has made his last ILM post?

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 25 February 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, the field's wide open for you now, Geir

Tom D., Sunday, 25 February 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

Personally I like the idea that screen names are fixed; knowing who is posting what trumps whatever amount of creativity will be lost.

Mark Rich@rdson, Sunday, 25 February 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

Well, keep in mind the possibility of name change has not been ruled out forever, merely that it was not a priority in the new code. There'll be more discussion about options soon, but patience will be needed.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 25 February 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

I kind of liked the changeability, also having names + email addresses + username gave you more info to parse in order to suss who was who.

ailsa, Sunday, 25 February 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

things I miss: the bar that separates posts with a large span of time in between them, the "total answers' stat on the new answers page

things that are weird: the post-skipping thing. especially without total answers to give you some expectation of the thread size, it can be kind of confusing.

bernard snowy, Sunday, 25 February 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

the thread skip message should be a bit clearer, red text or something. with a nice box around it. (it doesn't even have a style associated with it at the moment, it's just a standard <p>.)

and yes, a thicker <hr> line seperating posts from different periods (um, can't think of an easy way of doing this without checking each post. and how long is too long?)

koogs, Sunday, 25 February 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

Koogs! Nice box around it... You're a brave man to suggest that.

Keith, Sunday, 25 February 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 25 February 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

things i like about the new ilx:
- pages load very fast
- no breakdowns yet

things which should be improved
- as has been said before, long periods of silence in a thread should be made more visible.
- i think too much space is wasted. what i don't get at all is that the 8 tabs (or main links) are on three lines. why aren't they on one line there should be enough space even on a 14'' monitor. and what is the best way to get to the end of a thread? when i press ctrl end i arrive at the formatting tips and have to scroll up at least two screens to get to the posts located before the box. that is quite annoying, i find.
- in the old ilm new questions without answers yet were bold on the new answers page and were easy to spot. now they aren't anymore but they have (1 answer) next to them. that's wrong!
- has been mentioned before too: i'd like to see if i am logged in or out.

alex in mainhattan, Sunday, 25 February 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

alex in mainhattan OTM on all points.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 25 February 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

Personally I like the idea that screen names are fixed; knowing who is posting what trumps whatever amount of creativity will be lost.

Mark Rich@rdson

why DID people turn "show username" off anyway? only got yourselves to blame there!

fandango, Sunday, 25 February 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's do with them being fucking noobs or something.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 25 February 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

There are people who never used the new answers page! People be weird!

ailsa, Sunday, 25 February 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

I liked the new questions page. :(

novaheat, Sunday, 25 February 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

it's called "recent questions" now and you can find it under "more...".

alex in mainhattan, Sunday, 25 February 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

Oh.

curmudgeon, Monday, 26 February 2007 01:10 (eighteen years ago)

Seems like there are less folks posting on this board than in the past. Or maybe I'm just looking at the wrong threads (and likely it has little to do with the nu format but who knows.) And who needs those folks who left anyway!

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

A number of folks are having problems accessing the board from work situations -- it's being looked into, we think it has something to do with web proxies. Traffic has dropped some beyond that, certainly, but life goes on!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry if this has been mentioned upthread, but for me the grey opened threads are reverting back to the blue unopened threads every day--it makes it hard to keep up with what you've read or not.

Billy Pilgrim, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
I guess the " direct search" function is not able to bring up recent threads (from the last few weeks or so).

curmudgeon, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

Really? Hmmm. Can you post a thread on that on the mod request board with specific examples?

For those not checking ILE, a general code update has been done and Keith/Stet are looking to implement it in the very near future.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

Preview and test board with the new code.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

I was sure there was a recent thread on DC rock bands. I was trying to find it to post on that new thread about DC hardcore but was unable to find it via either a google search or a direct search. Hmmmm, was it "d.c." in the title or "dc" or maybe "washington" .

curmudgeon, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

I think there is a character limit so anything shorter than four letters won't register in the search.

Alex in SF, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

That explains it, I guess. I came up with threads with "Dischord" in the title, but not d.c. or dc

curmudgeon, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

Ned,

Can you explain to those like me with little programming skills what the effect of the "general code update" will be? Will we see a difference? Just curious.

curmudgeon, Friday, 23 March 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

Have you played around a bit on the test board yet? You'll be able to see some of the differences there, including how images work and the general appearance of the board. There's a rough list of changes somewhere but I'll have to dig it up; in the meantime, doesn't hurt to get familiar with the new version of the board in the meantime!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 March 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

I get timeout "Problem loading page"s on the test board link, Ned.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 23 March 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

This is pretty minor, but it would be nice if we could see the New Answers page for the whole week - like we used to do on oldILX. A next page function - like on the Recent Questions page would be great.

danzig, Saturday, 24 March 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

I get timeout "Problem loading page"s on the test board link, Ned.

Hmm, weird! I'll get Keith and/or Stet to check in here as they can.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 24 March 2007 00:04 (eighteen years ago)

I've missed that too, just to cosign.

fandango, Saturday, 24 March 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

also, my eyes keep reading "New Answers page" as "New Avengers page," can someone do something about that?

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 24 March 2007 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Need to get use to this now.

Where's the "google search"

curmudgeon, Sunday, 14 September 2008 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

I like it. Just different enough to be interesting, while retaining that familiar (and totally welcome) minimalism.

Tantrum The Cat, Sunday, 14 September 2008 04:31 (seventeen years ago)

I have to say that there is a very soothing minimalism to this new layout.

I'm with you. I love the new layout. Very professional looking, yet minimal and striking.
