Wotz it like - wot should it be like ?

I hope he doesn't sleepwalk through it; a few of his latest releases (excepting Taxi, which was pretty good) sound like exquisitely produced soundracks for fancy perfume.

Sean, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That should have read fancy perfume commercials.

Sean, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Works both ways.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I first thought this thread said "Bryan Ferry - Fanatic" as in he ws going to be in an episode of the MTV show. That would be pretty cool.

dave k, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three weeks pass...
Just heard Frantic and it ranks among Bryan's best. Hiroshima, Fool for Love and I Thought are the stand out tracks but there are no throw aways.... Bryan has finally thrown off the mantle of Avalon...watch out!

Toby Kenny, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's sad this seems to get so little interest... I'm dying to hear it. Amoeba doesn't have the import yet, and the US release date isn't until May 21, so I might have to wait awhile. Is Ferry barely a presence in the UK? Is he thought of as a dinosaur or something?

Sean, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fret not, Sean, we can wait (im)patiently together.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ferry waz on Parkinson tv chat show tha othr week doin 'goddess of love'(i think was the title) - i liked it. i am saving up my pennies. warning - if it is good ill drone on 4evah aboo tit.

he lookd gud

a-33, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pretty good on first two listens...dunno if it's so great as the feller above is making it out to be. Certainly leading off with "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" is one of the worst sequencing decisions of all time, but there's a lot of good stuff later on for them that stick around.

John Darnielle, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hm. Maybe I'll just program the CD to start on track two.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, that's a pretty downbeat way to start an album... especially an album called "Frantic"!

Sean, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

More I listen, the more I think somebody at Virgin needs to be fired for putting "Baby Blue" in the leadoff slot. (There's a possibility that it was BF's decision, in which case, he himself should be fired.) The second song, "Cruel," is one of his best ever: only the Let It Be Lowenbrau guitar toward the end stops it from being truly rantworthy.

John Darnielle, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Best album he's done in years! I wish however we did'nt have to wait so long. Stand out's for me 'Nobody loves me/Hiroshima and I thought. Still the coolest man in England.

Stephen Bamber, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I called Virgin today asking if it was in... it's next Tuesday.

Sean, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like most of the album - esp. 'Hiroshima' and 'I Thought'. I'm not fussed about 'One Way Love' and the Dylan covers.

a-33, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a real mixture; a rich brew. I am listening to it constantly at the moment. Cover follows original follows cover. He has even arranged a short song/poem? by Richard Coeur de Lion! I don't know what the beef is with It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. It's a classy track if you ask me. Good to see him writing new material as well though. He sure hasn't lost his touch. Cruel and Nobody Loves Me I like particularly, and A Fool For Love is just sensationally good. As to what it should be like, well I leave that to the artist himself.

Ian, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ok, I bought my US copy the day it was released (yesterday). I must say the album shows a lot more vigor and surface enthusiasm than he's shown in years. His singing is mixed higher than on the last few albums, and the overall sound is more straightforward than the overproduced, cluttered sound of "Mamouma" and "Bete Noir". The Dave Stewart collaborations are the weakest things on the album; they're not bad but sound somewhat generic and harken the most back to the "Mamouma" sound. "Cruel" is a standout for me so far, and I like the Dylan covers as well. Best probably is the Eno collaboration, "I Thought". I can't say this is as great as vintage Roxy, but if you thought he sounded like he was falling asleep on his last few records ("Taxi" excepted, that one I really like), then you'll find his apparant vitality here to be gratifying. And of course all his fans need this one anyway.

Sean, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep. Had a listen at the weekend, and it's heartening to know he can still cut it. "Goddess of Love" and "Hiroshima" were my favourites on that first listen. I thought the Dylan covers were pretty good too.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was pleasantly surprised listening to it at the record store the other day...probably the most energetic thing he's done in a while. I'll have to pick it up eventually.

Though it sounds like his voice might be beginning to slip a bit? Maybe age has finally crept up. Still quite listenable throughout, though, hopefully he can churn out a few more of quality...

Joe, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not heard any of the new album yet, but saw Roxy Music last year in Glasgow and Mr Ferry was in very good voice.

He's playing Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh on Saturday, perhaps i should have a peer over the railings and check it out.

Leigh, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am loving it! This album is great as is all of Bryan's other works. Mamouna and Avalon are classic and some of the best lyrics I have ever heard in my life. His sound is original. I think choosing Johnny Greenwood from the great Radiohead for Hiroshima was a great pick! Brayn is still the King!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cheryl collinson, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sounded like he was falling asleep on his last few records ("Taxi" excepted, that one I really like)
hmmm - Taxi is his only solo record besides The Bride Stripped Bare that I really don't like, and I think about half of As Time Goes By is brilliant ("I'm in the Mood for Love" and "Where or When" anyway), so probably this "falling asleep"ish singing is part of what I like, though I do like his singing on "peppy" songs like Virginia Plain, Fingerpoppin', and Let's Stick Together. I haven't heard Frantic yet as I can't afford to buy full-priced CDs. As Time Goes By didn't take long to show up second-hand. I developed a theory (I used to be obsessed with Roxy Music to a crazy extent!) that Ferry's main themes were time and memory, so that's part of what I liked about the As Time Goes By album and the Where or When song in particular ("It seems we stood and talked like this before, the smile you are smiling you were smiling then, but who knows where or when...") - are these themes at all evident on his new album?

haloist, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Revive. I'm listening to it now. His voice sounds terrific! I'd forgotten how moving the Eno collab "I Thought" is. It and "One Way Love" are the greatest Ferry album closers since Siren's "Nightingale" and "Just Another High."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, John's comments up above are extremely on point (unsurprisingly) -- starting off the way that it does is odd, but it's a fine listen that has grown on me over the years. Very accomplished without being lazy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I disagree with his remarks on "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," which is a fantastic way to start. The shit-kicking guitar and harmonica, his vocal control, the sass – it's like he shook off the cobwebs and hair mousse. J

ust to be mean, I'm playing "Bete Noir" now and – wow. It's the difference between grabbing a hairbrush to lipsynch Julio Iglesias in front of the bathroom mirror and humming a song while sitting at the very last table in a hotel lounge.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Thought" is the OPO. As a song, it's up there with the ballads on Siren, and the mix is keeps revealing new layers.

I'll be among the few who has something nice to say about the Dave Stewart tracks - the vocal melody on "Goddess of Love" is really quite lovely and inventive.

Bryan Ferry "Don't Think Twice" > Mike Ness "Don't Think Twice"
The Church "Hiroshima, Mon Amour" > Bryan Ferry "Hiroshima, Mon Amour"

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the difference between grabbing a hairbrush to lipsynch Julio Iglesias in front of the bathroom mirror and humming a song while sitting at the very last table in a hotel lounge.

The problem with this comparison is that they both sound fun.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Bryan Ferry, "Hiroshima" >>>> Ultravox, "Hiroshima Mon Amour

"The problem with this comparison is that they both sound fun."

I'm doing both this weekend – a wedding!

Hey, Ned, I just read your "Bete Noir" review: you're OTM on "Kiss & Tell." I have a soft spot for "The Name of the Game," at least the part before the chorus kicks in.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Bryan Ferry, "Hiroshima" >>>> Ultravox, "Hiroshima Mon Amour

Ain't that the truth.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm doing both this weekend – a wedding!

Yay!

Hey, Ned, I just read your "Bete Noir" review: you're OTM on "Kiss & Tell."

I completely forgot what I said!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

surprisingly good album.
for me Mamouna and Bete Noire were disappointments, but this is great. 'I Thought' is his best song since... erm, 'Don't Stop The Dance'.

zeus, Thursday, 28 April 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

And it's such a delicate thing too. rogermexico OTM about how the mix reveals hidden layers.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 28 April 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bete Noire" was a good effort, if only for the songs 'Limbo' (and it's accompanying _cool_ video [Ferry's tribute to Josephine Baker] ), 'Kiss and Tell', and 'Day for Night'.

"Frantic" was a much improved LP, even though his voice had become smokier after..... uhh..... having given up cigarettes.

Still waiting on a new Ferry/Roxy album this year/2006. Odds on which comes out first??

Garfield Odie (garfield), Thursday, 28 April 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I downloaded this when it came out and loved it, but haven't heard it in a while. His "Baby Blue" was one of my favorites takes on it. I don't understand that criticism at all, but maybe I would have to listen to it in its original tracklisting ?? It's a great performance, regardless

jesus this is a great album. I only heard it for the first time this week. Cruel might be the best song he's done since...what, Love is the Drug?

In hospital. May have suffered a heart attack:

Hey Look More Than Five Years Has Passed And You Have A C (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

Official statement just sent out: "Bryan Ferry has left hospital following a 24 hour period of routine observation and tests. All is well and he will be touring his 'Olympia' solo album commencing on April 19."

oh hi i really like this album

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 16 November 2014 03:43 (eleven years ago)

Frantic was def an unexpected blast of (comparative) fresh air as far as Ferry records go.
Not classic, but waaaaaay better than it was likely to be. Still enjoy it.

I've only just discovered how amazing I Thought is. My favourite Ferry song and one of my all-time favourites by anyone is Just Another High and incredibly, this songs touches similar ground.

PaulTMA, Monday, 2 April 2018 20:39 (eight years ago)

The chintziness of the organ preset is part of the charm -- it sounds like one of Ferry's beloved musical idols, beaming in from the ether to this island earth.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 April 2018 20:42 (eight years ago)

I've found a live version on youtube which is 5-10 bpm faster and it largely kills the mood, sadly. Guess they didn't think it would go over live well at the original tempo. It really does sound like it could have been written in 1975 though

PaulTMA, Monday, 2 April 2018 20:48 (eight years ago)

Has either Ferry or Eno discussed this song much in any interviews? I can't help but think that Eno simply handed over the outro chords from The True Wheel, which make up 90% of the song

"I Thought" is phenomenal. The rest of this album doesn't do much for me. Too many upfront guitars and shuffly breakbeats. I guess I prefer hazy and overproduced, singing-in-a-barely-enunciated-whisper solo Ferry.

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 9 December 2023 23:28 (two years ago)

Also much prefer this mix of "Hiroshima". Ups the mystery.

one year passes...

I had never heard this before picking up a $2 cd yesterday to fill in my collection and it’s… okay? It’s more energetic than his 80s/90s stuff, but none of the covers did much for me, and the originals didn’t grab me on first listen except for “I Thought.” I’ll spend more time with it though.

once beloved, recently troubled (Dan Peterson), Sunday, 29 June 2025 15:55 (ten months ago)

yeah the covers are whatever (which is usually the case with Ferry IMO) but the originals on this album are great, particularly 'Cruel'

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Sunday, 29 June 2025 16:07 (ten months ago)

oh I guess that was the last comment on this thread before the revive

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Sunday, 29 June 2025 16:08 (ten months ago)

The Dylan covers seem perfunctory, like Dylanesque leftovers. I was surprised this album came first. And he has a way of plopping an (imo) unnecessary “Carrickfergus” or “Amazing Grace” in the midst of things that disrupt the flow for me. On this one it’s “Goodnight Irene.” I’ll focus more on the originals next listen.

once beloved, recently troubled (Dan Peterson), Sunday, 29 June 2025 16:28 (ten months ago)

The "One Way Live" cover is magnificent; it complements "IThought." When he sings, "Take it from me, I know what I say" it's a big friendly aural wink.

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 June 2025 16:31 (ten months ago)

"Love"

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 June 2025 16:31 (ten months ago)

I don’t know “One Way Love” at all so that one slid right by me.

once beloved, recently troubled (Dan Peterson), Sunday, 29 June 2025 16:38 (ten months ago)

The opening “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” positively *blasts* out of the speakers/headphones. It has a delightfully energetic late period Ferry vocal (perhaps his last) and a honking harmonica solo. I have absolutely no idea what all this “perfunctory” business is all about.

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 1 July 2025 22:39 (ten months ago)

Also Chris Spedding IIRC

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 1 July 2025 22:39 (ten months ago)

Yeah, it's one of his greatest covers.

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 1 July 2025 22:41 (ten months ago)

This for me is his best post-70s release - his Heathen.
I like the Dylan covers on this better than any on Dylanesque. Maybe "Don't Think Twice" tied with "Gates of Eden".

Certainly leading off with "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" is one of the worst sequencing decisions of all time

It's a bold move that plays off - "let's start from the ending and see where we can go from there".

Cruel is the standout track on this for me

It's good, especially since it features his first lyric that isn't based on romance/"the high life" since Manifesto, maybe?

things that disrupt the flow for me. On this one it’s “Goodnight Irene.”

A friend suggested the best way to appreciate this was to imagine Ferry singing it in denim overalls in the middle of a pigsty.

Don't like "Goddess of Love" or "One Way Love", sorry Dave Stewart.
