1. Paula Zahn is doing a special called Hip Hop: Art or Poison.

You can take an "art or poison" survey at her website right now http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/paula.zahn.now

2. Onion AV Club discusses hip hop in a discussion that made me cringe several times:
http://www.avclub.com/content/node/58832

What is going on here?

Pretty even split on that Zahn poll haha.

I actually really like how the A/V Club one throws out its own embarrassment and tackles this stuff head-on, but I'm totally surprised by Rabin continually caving and granting points to Murray -- I know he's always trended a little toward the conscious and undie hip-hop, but his reviews take the mainstream seriously enough that I wouldn't expect him to go defending the genre in the same terms Murray's attacking it (i.e., "well okay but it's not all like that").

Seriously, though, the conversation's made a lot better by Murray saying honest stuff like "I just don't know how to tell good from bad."

nabisco, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

But I think some people worry too much about telling good from bad (in any genre).

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

Saying you can't tell K-Fed from Chamillionaire is a brave admission.

Mark Rich@rdson, Thursday, 22 February 2007 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

Prominent media outlet-type white folks have finally figured out it's not a fad?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 22 February 2007 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that AV Club convo is kind of interesting, although it's pretty funny when Rabin starts raving about how great Mark Ronson is (also, did he bite the phrase "Pete Rockist" from ILM?).

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 22 February 2007 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

there's something weird about how its structured as 'white middle aged' as if black middle aged people don't have the same age-identity crisises re: drugs and misogyny. But maybe i'm reading too much into the headline.

deej, Thursday, 22 February 2007 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

I like the classism in Rabin's responses. You're white, ergo you like Wilco. What about middle-aged guys who want to listen to Pantera?

unperson, Thursday, 22 February 2007 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

what about most middle aged white music fans, who don't listen to wilco

deej, Thursday, 22 February 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

ew the pro-hip-hop dude is almost as bad as the anti-hip-hop idiot

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 February 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

i consider myself a bit of an expert on white people.

i don't want to bore you with statistics, but to put it in layman's terms, let's just say that a good number of them don't actually like wilco.

HI DERE

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

hello chum! always nice to meet another white person!

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

"Anti-hip-hop" is a fairly idiotic way of describing Murray's position here: he's mostly just admitting that he doesn't get it, understand it, feel comfortable with it, or pay attention to it. (It's only when Rabin -- weirdly -- starts hedging and agreeing that Murray starts in with anything resembling specific criticisms of hip-hop, most of which he admits are based on no real experience with listening to the stuff anyway!)

nabisco, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

I like discussing me some hip hop, tho.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

Oh hahaha wait, did I just bother pointing out that LEX suggested something sweeping, bristly, and solipsistic?

nabisco, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

Murray just seems so bothered by what other people are thinking of him. No wonder he's got no sense of joy.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

This group is not for the faint of heart. All members are athletes of Caucasion descent. DISCLAIMER: In no way are the following memebers intolerant of others, we are just doing our duty of protecting the Arian brotherhood.

max, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

I can't tell the difference between Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

mh, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

i'm surprised to see him say the dude from little bro is one of his favorite rappers! he's so mediocre.

message board posters and the art of pretend obtuseness!

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

deej, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

deej, i don't know if i heard it...i just DL'd the 50 Bodies mixtape, but haven't listened to it yet... is it on that?

marley doesn't do much anymore that's exciting!

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

deej, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

cool, i'm listening to this now! i like the beat. real jazzy.

i don't even know if termanology is ACTUALLY good or just designed to push all my grumpy old late 80s/early 90s east coast rap taste buttons. but i like him, a lot.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

its good because its in an old style but termanology doesn't sound old

deej, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i kept listening his "the format" song is good too!

Poison: Art or Hip-Hop?

Hurting 2, Friday, 23 February 2007 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/feb/07/hip-hop

Once, online music zine Pitchfork - a sort of bible for the serious indie rock connoisseur - sat cosily within its self-proclaimed parameters of guitars, unkempt beards and light irony. A couple of years back, though, hip-hop broke in Pitchforkland, ushering in a new editorial policy where Kanye West sits next to Arcade Fire, Lil Wayne rubs shoulders with Radiohead and fans - and bands - are comfortable walking the join.

it's an incredibly stupid article, even for someone who writes for plan b.

Even when done respectfully, with enthusiasm, -- what does this mean? -- the sight of whitey "getting crunk" swings a little too close to a modern-day blackface minstrelsy for comfort (The Onion nailed it best with their mocked-up supplement bearing the headline We Try Way Too Hard And Come Across As A Little Racist With Our Dawg Lil Wayne).

the onion's magazine cover was spoofing white people's colour supplements -- like the guardian guide -- not straw-white-men rapping wtf?

For a generation that can't recall a world before hip-hop, though, this poses a conundrum: how to participate in the genre without looking like you want to own the show?

ok lol rofl he's shit and everything, but is this guy from a generation that can't recall a world before eminem? wtf is he on about?

special guest stars mark bronson, Saturday, 7 February 2009 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

Article was blah, but it did make me very curious about this: Salem, a Michigan trio who inhabit a realm somewhere between the cotton-wool bliss of the Cocteau Twins and DJ Screw

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

i.e. cLOUDDEAD

Suggest Bandage (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

but is this guy from a generation that can't recall a world before eminem?

Generally, those who were born in the 90s don't recall a world before Eminem. OK, they may recall Spice Girls and Aqua (the oldest ones of them, that is), but I think that's mainly it.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 7 February 2009 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i dont really need to read another 'omg im so embarassed about white rappers lol wtf' article. esp after eminem, cage, necro, ill bill, beasties, etc etc.

p-noid (titchyschneiderMk2), Saturday, 7 February 2009 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

(ie journalists feeling all self conscious and embarrassed about white rappers and generating lazy lols are much cornier than white rappers).

to be writing for the guardian, this guy is probably more than 19. obv there are kids out there who have never heard eminem but to not mention him is a bit ehhhh.

special guest stars mark bronson, Saturday, 7 February 2009 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

i.e. cLOUDDEAD - not really: http://www.myspace.com/jjhhmm

I hear early-Cocteaus somewhat, & there are some Screw-esque breaks scattered throughout - I'm kinda lukewarm to it, but I'm sure it would sound a lot better with some purple drank.

anway, back to white boys theorizin' bout the rap game.,

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Saturday, 7 February 2009 18:36 (seventeen years ago)

actually, the DJ Screw thing really does become more pronounced on the third track.

Ricky Apples (Pillbox), Saturday, 7 February 2009 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

Oh & wow, they roll out the Cocteaus on the fourth. I'm def warming to this a bit.
