Nina's "Wild Is the Wind" is one of the greatest recordings of the 20th century. But I'm not sure what attributes of "Sinnerman" you're seeking more of.

Lilac Wine is nothing like Sinnerman, really.

"My Sweet Lord/ Today..." is a good call. probably my favourite Nina track.

Yeah, "My Sweet Lord / Today is a Killer" is a good call in that it has similar arrangements, though it's more... subdued, not as frenetic. For me, though, nothing tops the sense of abandonment and urgency in "Sinnerman." Nina's version makes Peter Tosh's/Bob Marley's versions ("Downpresser Man") seem brittle in comparison.

Granted jed, "Lilac Wine" doesn't have the same urgency as "Sinnerman". But there's a brooding intensity that's shared by both tracks, at least to my ears..."My Sweet Lord" is just far too jaunty...

Not to be totally out of context but I remember in that Lives of John Lennon book there was a story of Lennon going to a Nina Simone concert really drunk shouting about how hot she looked until they kicked him out.

i think of "sinnerman," "tweeter" and "see-line woman" as essentially rhythm tracks. that's what's distinctive about them. i mean, they have good melodies and hooks, but the rhythm is what sets them apart to me. i wish nina had done more of that particular thing. maybe she did and i just haven't heard it.

I just can't think of how Sinnerman goes at the moment but my fave Nina track is from her less favoured later work - cover of Randy Newman's Baltimore.
If there's any The Wire fans on here, it would make a superb soundtrack to that

Apologies if this has been mentioned, but Timbaland liberally samples/manipulates "Sinnerman" on the opening cut of his solo album from last year. It's interesting, at the very least.
