Mike Dixn, Thursday, 1 March 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

The request body was too large to be cached during the authentication process

WTF???

I was gonna list a bunch of stuff but I guess it was too much.

part 1:
Alice Coltrane - World Galaxy LP. Beautiful copy. A very rare record of swirly cosmic jazz.

Konstruktivits - Glennascaul LP. I sold this in one of my purges and regretted it greatly. My favorite of his.

13th Floor Elevators - S/T LP. Shockingly, I have never owned a copy of this record, making do with a tape Steve Millen made me in the 80's.

V/A - Objectivity: The Object Singles Album LP. Just found out about this label and somebody had this for cheap along with a ton of amazing UK DIY 7" goodies I couldn't afford.

The Cramps - Psychedelic Jungle LP. This record is more subtle than the debut. To replace a CD copy that I sold.

Chris & Cosey - Songs Of Love & Lust LP. Shockingly, I have never even HEARD this record. Until now. It is really great.

Vic Godard & The Subway Sect - A Retrospective LP. On Rough Trade, a handy collection.

Tom Waits - Foreign Affairs LP (white label promo). Slowly finding all of his stuff.

Suicide - S/T LP with 3 bonus tracks. And a different cover! On Red Star! It's a 1980 JEM repress.

Yello - Claro Que Si LP. Original on Ralph in great shape.

Siouxsie & The Banshees - The Scream LP. Cause that remastered single CD SUCKS (overmodulated, clipped sound) and I am selling it ASAP.

Richard Thompson - Live (More Or Less) 2LP. Obscure repackage of the "...Bright Lights" LP with a bonus live album that is one of his best things ever, especially the long versions of "Night Comes In" and "Calvary Cross" on side 2... Thompson has never sounded heavier to me.

Killing Joke - Fire Dances LP. Replacement of a CD copy, mint.

Black Flag - Everything Went Black 2LP and The First Four Years LP. Used to have "Everything", needed it back. Don't have the singles and comp tracks on side 2 of "First Four Years" so it was worth it.

Einstuerzende Neubauten - Haus Der Luege LP. Replacement of a CD copy.

CTI - ELemental 7 LP. Upgrade of this stellar Chris & Cosey side project.

Ramones - Leave Home LP. Dubious Portuguese pressing with "Sheena", sounds just fine though.

Captain Beefheart - Ice Cream For Crow LP (promo). Absolutely pristine and beautiful, replacement of a CD copy.

John Cale - Paris 1919 LP. Ditto.

Nina Hagen - Nunsexmonkrock LP. Upgrade of this fantastic LP. One of my early 80's favorites.

sleeve, Thursday, 1 March 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

part 2:

The Creatures - Feast LP. Don't usually see this around my parts, never had or heard this before either.

Yoko Ono - Approximately Infinite Universe 2LP. Eight bucks! Hell yeah!

New Order - Blue Monday/The Beach 12". Replacement of my copy I stupidly traded in for some noise record circa 1987-88.

The Glove - Blue Sunshine LP. Never had this LP and it was $7.

Herbie Hancock - S/T 2LP on Blue Note Reissue Series. I listened to this last night, classic stuff, nice clean copy.

Neil Michael Hagerty - The Howling Hex 2LP. Probably the highlight of Hagerty's post-Royal Trux years, I foresee many listens ahead.

Miles Davis - Water Babies LP. Outtakes from various eras. Upgrade copy.

Bush Tetras - Rituals EP. Drastically underpriced ($6) copy of this classic EP that I used to have.

Siouxsie & The Banshees - Join Hands LP. Replacement for a copy long since traded in.

Big Black - Atomizer LP. Ditto.

Bikini Kill - Pussy Whipped LP. Only had this on tape, I think I have all their stuff now.

Miles Davis - Jack Johnson LP
John Coltrane - My Favorite Things LP
Miles Davis Quintet - Miles Smiles LP
Miles Davis - E.S.P. LP
Miles Davis - My Funny Valentine/In Concert LP
James Blood Ulmer - Free Lancing LP
Count Ossie & The Mystic Revelation Of Rastafari - Tales Of Mozambique LP

(all in good shape for $5 each from one dealer, I didn't have any of these)

Gong - You LP. Pretty beat up Virgin Records copy, I need to compare sound with my Charly version. This one has a different cover.

The Doors - Morrison Hotel LP. I probably sold this 20 plus years ago, bought it again for "Peace Frog" and will probably discover other good things I forgot.

Wall Of Voodoo - Call Of The West LP and Dark Continent LP. Definitely an ILM-influenced choice. $7 for both!

sleeve, Thursday, 1 March 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

sleeve, you are winnin! wotta lotta gems in there...

There are no record stores near me but I did just order some sort of TVPs rarities disc that I hadn't known about. Don't know anything about it and it hasn't arrived yet.

I would love to have that Bush Tetras! I saw them a few times and used to have a big crush on one of them (and I thought they were great, of course). I am pretty sure that there is (and I have) a ROIR cassette of theirs but couldn't begin to find it, even if I had a decent cassette deck (which I don't).

Saxby D. Elder, Thursday, 1 March 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

The Bush Tetras ROIR cassette's available on CD as well (I have it) - you can get it on Ebay for not that much - less than buying a new tape deck anyway!

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 1 March 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks! But I really need a tape deck!

i was thinking I could get a good vintage nak on ebay but they are still pretty expensive! (and which one to get?!!) (that part is serious, if anyone knows which is the best Nak to get...)

Saxby D. Elder, Thursday, 1 March 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

Just got the "No One Left To Blame" compilation of twenty American punk unknowns '76-'82. After 18 long years of searching, the Fems "Go To A Party" will play once again at my house. Am elated beyond all belief.

Bought this at his Jazz Standard show last night:

Vinicius Cantuaria - Silva

o. nate, Saturday, 10 March 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

$43 total, all vinyl, from two thrift stores in Greenpoint this afternoon (part one, since apparently the post is too long otherwise):

Blitz Mob Die Organisation (German hip-hop double album, Blitz Vinyl Germany, 1995 -- the crew on the cover has 13 guys in it, and they do a song called "That's The Joint." Never heard of them before myself)
Hoagy Carmichael A Legenday Peformer & Composer (RCA, 1979 -- most of the tracks are actually sung by other people; nice die-cut or whatever it's called cover with a big round hole in the middle)
Ray Charles Wish You Were Here Tonight (Columbia, 1983 -- pop-country album; I remember liking it when it came out)
Divinyls Temperamental (red vinyl Chrysalis UK pressing, 1988)
Johnny Dodds Ji Grandid Del Jazz (Fabbri Editori Italy, ??? -- I used to see these collections a lot in Germany in the '80s, and used to own ones by Ayler and some other people but don't anymore -- lovely books inside with lots of Italian notes; I'm not sure what year they actually came out, though)
EPMD Strictly Business (Sleeping Bag/Fresh, 1988)
Junior Ji (Mercury, 1982 -- first copy I saw in one part of the Thing's basement bummed me out by having a Kool and the Gang LP inside instead, but a half hour later I found another copy with a more torn up cover but with the correct LP inside, so I combined the correct LP with the better cover, slick, huh?)
The Headboys The Headboys (RSO, 1979)
Little Girls Thanks Heaven! (PVC EP, 1983)*
Mother's Finest Mother Factor (Epic, 1978 -- I never owned an album by them before! But reportedly this is after they'd mainly abandoned metal for sub-par disco-funk)
Juice Newton & Silver Spur Juice Newton & Silver Spur (RCA, 1975, sealed! Record collectors please advise: Do I open it or not? And does the fact that the top of the sleeve is rather scuffed up negate the sealedeness?)
The Quick One Light In A Blackout (Epic, 1982 -- which will be the better '82 Brit-soul album, this or Junior? We'll see!)
Revanche Music Man (Atlantic, 1979 -- Italodisco LP I've never seen before by Malavasi and Petrus, who later masterminded....Change, right?)

* - Christgau review:

http://robertchristgau.com/get_artist.php?name=little+girls

xhuxk, Sunday, 11 March 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

part two (included in the same $43):

Rhythm Team Rhythm Team (Missle, 1987 -- definitely looks to have disco-metal possibilites, though I never heard of it before. Kenny Arronson is listed as one of about 20 "additional musicians" in addition to the about 10 people in the core group; Dave Douglas is on the former list playing trumpet too. And there is a rapper, and the guitarist looks extremely hair-metal)
SPK Machine Voodoo (Elektra, 1985 -- homoerotic proto-industrial/elektronic boody muzik on a major label? Or maybe not)
The Tymes Trustmaker (RCA, 1974 -- It hadn't occured to me that the same group who did the late doo-woppish hit "So Much in Love" later did the early bubbledisco hit "You Little Trustamaker," but now I know)
Andy Zwerling [i[Spiders In The Night[/i] (Kama Sutra, 1971 -- I know nothing about this guy, but I know I've heard of him a few times over the years, possibly from fans of Lenny Kaye, who plays guitar on this. Any info would be welcome. A quick google seach suggests it may be worth considerably more than the $2 I paid for it.)
Metal Killers (Kastle Killer compilation, 1985, with Tygers of Pan Tang, Diamond Head, The Hard featuring Bernie Torme, Quartz, Sledgehammer, plus "Fast As a Shark" by Accept among other things NWOBHM and not)

xhuxk, Sunday, 11 March 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

It's a dense record. Do you like Vannier's arrangements for Histoire de Melody Nelson? This record has that same sense of playfulness, only with Serge and co. replaced by bonkers musique concrete. It's not as immediate as HMN but I think it might hold up better in the long run. The repeated themes of HMN get a little cloying if you listen too often, whereas the Vannier LP always feel fresh. I would recommend it!

s. morris, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

I would add that -- if you're in the US -- getting the CDs of any Finders Keepers release is the way to go. They might not be as pretty, but unless you've got a record store near you that stocks the LPs you'll have to pay $24 plus shipping online compared to like $12 for the CDs on overstock.com. Of course, if you're a vinyl fetishist that doesn't matter, and the Finders Keepers packaging/liner notes are pretty great. Just something to think about.

s. morris, Monday, 19 November 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

It is sometimes worth waiting, though- a lot of Finders Keepers releases get cheap reissues on B-Music, the US branch of Twisted Nerve/Finders Keepers/Delay 68, usually within 3-4 months of the UK release if not sooner.

In the last couple months or so:
Andy Votel- One Nation Under a Grave
Glass Candy- Beat Box
Cabaret Voltaire- The Voice of America reissue
v/a- Dirty Edits, vol. 1
v/a- The Portable Supersound
Benji B Presents: A Space Odyssey
Lindstrom- The Contemporary Fix EP
Daft Punk- Alive 2007 preorder
The Cure- Pornography 2xcd reissue (Amazon US has this for $15)
v/a- Four Songs by Arthur Russell EP
The Oscillation- Out of Phase
Dinosaur L- 24->24 Music
Giorgio Moroder- E=MC2
John Cooper Clarke- Zip Style Method

It is sometimes worth waiting, though- a lot of Finders Keepers releases get cheap reissues on B-Music, the US branch of Twisted Nerve/Finders Keepers/Delay 68, usually within 3-4 months of the UK release if not sooner.

This is only for the CDs though, correct? If B-Music releases cheap FK as well vinyl I'm going to be kicking myself.

s. morris- Correct, only CD so far. And there are a few annoying gaps in the catalog, not everything gets brought over.

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

s.morris, yeh Vannier is my favourite of Gainsbourg's arrangers, his work on the cannabis soundtrack is astounding too. He did a show at the barbican last year with a full orchestra and choir doing L'Enfant assassin des mouches & melody Nelson in their entirety. it was pretty much mind blowing

cw, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

That sounds excellent! I'd be interested to hear how they did L'Enfant live... did Vannier have tapes of the concrete material or did they have people banging and buzzing in real time?

s. morris, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

it was all live!! little kid marching in sandpit and mucking about with shears. it was pretty spectacular.

dang, colonel poo, you go on vacation or something? otherwise that's a lot of international shipping, even with the weak dollar!

ian, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I went to LA for Thanksgiving, went to Amoeba, Fingerprints & some place in Culver City the name of which escapes me. The fact that everything was so cheap led to me spending WAY too much money in the end!

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 23:50 (eighteen years ago)

some damn nice records in there colonel. shame about the one glaring piece of crap - i'm sure the band would have sent you that for free.. you know the one i mean

to answer s. morris' question one month late, the Harmonia record is about what I expected -- beautiful, meandering, wallpaper jams but only they really had that sound

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

Yoshi Wada - Lament For The Rise and Fall of the Elephantine Crocodile

Just found this on UbuWeb. Incredible stuff, and recorded in an empty swimming pool!

And which of the Obscure Tape Music from Japan albums would you recommend? (From the samples I've heard, it sounds like all of them.) Shame it's only select ones available as LPs.

The new CD of the Yoshi Wada sounds a lot better than the vinyl transfer on Ubuweb, also longer tracks and pictures of the recording session. never seen a set of bagpipes that long

Some of the Obscure Tape Musics are more consistent than others but every single one has at least one great track. Vol. 4 is the prettiest / most ambient. The Ichiyanagi Vol 5 has a 20 minute improv feedback set with Cage & Tudor from 1967, incredible shredding noise.

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Tricky - Blowback
Freedy Johnston - Never Home

Ballin' on a budget.

kiss out the jams, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

I remember reading about Ichiyanagi in Japrocksampler, but can't remember the details, or even if it said anything at all about that particular performance. All I recall is that he was Yoko Ono's beau before Ringo.
