I am noob. Old schoolers, plz to school the hoos. Based on what little little I've heard (recommended by AMG, no less) my desert island might be

Carcass - Heartwork
Deicide - Deicide
Morbid Angel - Covenant
Napalm Death - Fear Emptiness Despair
Entombed - Clandestine

Seen http://www.ilxor.com:8080/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=41&threadid=55263 but I wanna know what you dudes would choose to be stranded with.

Those are all very good records, but you also need Atheist's Piece Of Time and Pestilence's Testimony Of The Ancients and Suffocation's Pierced From Within (don't remember if that's early 90s or mid/late 90s, but it rules anyway).

unperson, Sunday, 25 February 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

There's also this POV DM.

I think I'd update that as:
Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Carcass - Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious
Immolation - Dawn of Possession (they released a string of excellent albums starting here - In After, but early 90s)
Demilich - Nespithe (free dl
Deicide - Legion

Oh cool, search must have missed that one. Sorry all, thanks dude.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 25 February 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for the DL, by the way!

Siegbran, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

My first post, hello everyone!

More deathly picks from the early 90s:

Asphyx - The Rack
Grave - Into the Grave
Illdisposed - Four Depressive Seasons
Incantation - Onward to Golgotha
Morgoth - The Eternal Fall
Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence
Nocturnus - Thresholds
Sinister - Cross the Styx
Tiamat - The Astral Sleep

Century Media is running a very nice series of cheap and good-looking reissues.

But Charlie that's only four.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

Entombed - Clandestine
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the sick
Autopsy - Mental Funeral
Bolt Thrower - The IVth Crusade
Incantation - Onward to Golgotha

Honorable mention to Cynic's "Focus", which doesn't feel like it belongs in the list even though I love it. Too newagey for, perhaps.
I'm not nearly as fond of the rawer 80's stuff as I used to be. No patience for "Seven Churches", for instance.

Gorefest - False
For some reason I never heard that one. I owned a copy of "Soul Survivor" at one point, which I found rather lame. They were going for more of a hard rock thing on that though, so I shouldn't have let it kept me from checking out the earlier records.

Øystein, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

Soul Surviver is terrible indeed. False is a whole different beast - think Bolt Thrower + old Pestilence + Left Hand Path-era Entombed + Fourth Dimension-era Hypocrisy. And better than all of these. None of that blast-all-the-time stuff, it's oldfashioned headbangable DM all the way. Everything works, riff after riff, all spot-on, memorable solos, instantly airdrummable, growl-along choruses. Jan-Chris' vocals are glorious. Unfortunately his voice was completely shot after the subsequent tour. "Erase" and everything after was absolutely afwul.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

I liked their "Autobahn" cover, though. Reportedly Gorefest are in good shape again (I didn't get to listen to the comeback album). They were also going on tour with Bolt Thrower last year but we got God Dethroned instead.

By the way, WELCOME no-nonsense! You have kicked me much knowledge, it's very appreciated and the CD collection is growing by leaps and bounds thanks to this thread.

I'd heard thrash doods speak pejoratively of Bolt Thrower before, but I'm pleasantly surprised to find that I really like The IVth Crusade!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

btw, weren't you guys in the ole metal newsgroups around 10 years ago?

no-nonsense, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I like all Bolt Thrower. The latest one was amazing, probably the best since "...For Victory".

Those were the days! I was not that regular a poster but kept an eye on them since the alt.thrash days until 2000 or so.

dollar general (am0n), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 15:50 (eight years ago)

where's Glenn, can he do a chart between this thread & the other DM POV that shows us which albums show up most often & gives us a consensus top 5

like on glance I feel like Mental Funeral & Onward to Golgotha & Erosion of Sanity all have a shot

(j/k Glenn I know you're busy)

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 16:00 (eight years ago)

actually replace tomb w/ none so vile

dollar general (am0n), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 16:14 (eight years ago)

otm

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Thursday, 2 February 2017 00:09 (eight years ago)

I guess I never gave mine

Blessed
Onward
Mental Funeral
Human
Erosion of Sanity

really this is a pretty great exercise for this genre because there's SO much you end up leaving out - None So Vile, Tomb, Legion, Heartwork, Thresholds, plus dozens of "but I love this one" like Gorefest but those'd be my five right now

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Thursday, 2 February 2017 00:13 (eight years ago)

ahh, a man after my own heart re: Erosion of Sanity. i feel like spinning that now.

Neanderthal, Thursday, 2 February 2017 00:16 (eight years ago)

feel weird that mine's all U.S. but...USDM is the stuff that opened the door for me, the only thing I had back in the day from abroad was an Afflicted 7" which I didn't really get at the time

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Thursday, 2 February 2017 00:51 (eight years ago)

or U.S. & Canada rather

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Thursday, 2 February 2017 00:52 (eight years ago)

I only listed those that hadn't yet been listed, my actual top, er 7, would be something like

Clandestine
Human
Testimony of the Ancients
Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious
Blessed Are the Sick
A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Deicide
Dawn of Possession
False
War Master

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Thursday, 2 February 2017 09:06 (eight years ago)

OK, top 10.
