I'm trying to burn #1 Record and Radio City onto one CD

but together they're about 40 seconds over the limit. In order for both to fit I have to leave one song off. Hate to have to do it because I really like both, but I picked "Morpha Too" cause it's the shortest. Did I fuck up?

iiiijjjj, Sunday, 25 February 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Considering they were relased together on CD as a double album...

PappaWheelie V, Sunday, 25 February 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I was going to say...

Mark G, Sunday, 25 February 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

I know this, but for whatever reason I couldn't get em both to fit. Let me rephrase the question: if someone put a gun to your head and forced you to omit one song from this double disc, which would go?

iiiijjjj, Sunday, 25 February 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

And assume it was a fairly high-caliber handgun at close range i.e. you had to comply, no questions asked!

iiiijjjj, Sunday, 25 February 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

i would represent radio city in its entirety, and cut something from the first album. off the top of my head, i say the india song.

QuantumNoise, Sunday, 25 February 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

why does india song get so much hate :(

bernard snowy, Sunday, 25 February 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe you're accidentally putting gaps between songs? Let me consider the question at hand though.

shanecavanaugh, Sunday, 25 February 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

also, you can generally fit a little more than 80 min on a cdr. I use Nero, and there's an option for "overburn." I think I've gotten 81+ min before.

Lingbert, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

Not to be a dick but maybe just buy the CD. I am sure it's available used for like $4.

Saxby D. Elder, Monday, 26 February 2007 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

why does india song get so much hate :(

i dunno why, it's a nice fantasy piece, imo. and the arrangement with the flute is nice.
"not to be a dick" but why not buy the sacd hybrid that has both records and sounds sublime?

outdoor_miner, Monday, 26 February 2007 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

the fuck you think i'm made of gold

iiiijjjj, Monday, 26 February 2007 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

the fuck you think i'm made of gold

If this wasn't an absolute classic I wouldn't bring actually BUYING THE RECORD into it.

Saxby D. Elder, Monday, 26 February 2007 06:37 (eighteen years ago)

Considering they were relased together on CD as a double album...

... where, in order to fit both albums on one CD, they left off "In the Street" of course

Tom D., Monday, 26 February 2007 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

uh, no they didn't

Frogman Henry, Monday, 26 February 2007 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

Uh, yes they http://www.amazon.com/1-Record-Radio-City/dp/B000000XHA

Frogman Henry, Monday, 26 February 2007 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck, neither of knows how to post links on nu-ILX!

Tom D., Monday, 26 February 2007 11:13 (eighteen years ago)

... but check the link above, no "In the Street"

Tom D., Monday, 26 February 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

So. No they didn't.

Frogman Henry, Monday, 26 February 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

It's listed on your link. Are you mental.

Frogman Henry, Monday, 26 February 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, hold on, it is there! Sorry! But when my ex-flatmate bought it, it wasn't on it! That was years ago tho, when CD must have been smaller!!

Tom D., Monday, 26 February 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

... 'cos I remember slaggin' him off about it

Tom D., Monday, 26 February 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

Kay i believe you. Millions wouldn't.

Frogman Henry, Monday, 26 February 2007 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

I can't imagine having those albums and not knowing the glory that is "In the Street". I would junk "Don't Lie to Me" if anything. That one's piss poor.

Frogman Henry, Monday, 26 February 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, I love "Don't Lie to Me", there's no escaping from the fact that "The India Song" must go

Tom D., Monday, 26 February 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

no wai.

Frogman Henry, Monday, 26 February 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

I'd rather cut something from "Radio City". (not "September Gurls" ovb.) The first album is a wonderful collection of songs, and the presence of Chris Bell's wonderful backing vocals gives the album something their other two albums didn't have.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 26 February 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

Geir OTM!

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

no, really.

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

still one of the best sounding CDs i own! the orginal american reissue release of the first two albums. amazing. considering how long ago they transferred it to cd and how often people fuck stuff like that up.

scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

Sure it sounds nice, although the mono version of "O My Soul" is one major flaw that was corrected with the recent version.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 26 February 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

"Morpha Too" is a good choice.

abanana, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

not really because it's an awesome song. ditch something from the first album.

teenagequiet, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

"Don't Lie To Me" is perhaps the most incongruous track, I'd have to pick that one. But it would have to be at gunpoint.

sleeve, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

the radio station live "don't lie to me" with chilton singing solo is soooo good

ghost rider, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

isn't the obvious answer St 100/6??? sure it's pretty but there's plenty more pretty on the album

ghost rider, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

"Morpha Too" is the only Big Star song I've put on a mixtape. Luv it.

libarian, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

"Morpha Too" seems like a decent choice. "India Song" is great, haters are fools.

clotpoll, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck it, cut September Gurls and just listen to it from some soundtrack...

Saxby D. Elder, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 06:44 (eighteen years ago)

If it's really only 40 seconds you need to lose, just fade a couple of the longer numbers early (or lose a chorus or two). Either Don't Lie To Me or The India Song would be my choices too. Certainly nothing off Radio City. All the short songs are *essential*.

harveyw, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

Without "September Gurls", the entire "Radio City" album would sound like some pointless rock'n'roll album.

"#1 Album" was their sole masterpiece album, although none of the songs were half as good as that perfect pop single.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

"in the street" and "st" were left off of the first cd issue of #1 record/radio city, presumebly (sp) because cds would only fit 75 minutes rather than 80 minutes.

you really should just buy it

babedad, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 09:03 (eighteen years ago)

"in the street" and "st" were left off of the first cd issue of #1 record/radio city

Told you!

Tom D., Wednesday, 28 February 2007 10:14 (eighteen years ago)

the newest one has all the tracks

babedad, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 10:19 (eighteen years ago)

"newest one" = "the one I bought in college over ten years ago"

J, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

I think he means the SACD version, which came out in 2004. ASIN: B0001Z4OVK

Jazzbo, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

Just saw this thread, but I have the original CD issue of this on Big Beat and it is 69:32 long. They note that they left off the two aforementioned songs because of "manufacturing limitations." It's dated 1987 (liner notes August '86) when the limit of a CD was 70 minutes.

"India Song" has grown on me, but I would have left it off too, probably, if I was deciding back then.

nickn, Thursday, 1 March 2007 09:15 (eighteen years ago)

I was j/k... I was the one to suggest that he just come out the pocket and buy the fucking thing.

Hmmm, my version is quite old, I wonder if mine is missing some shit. I never really thought about it before, like I just assumed it was all on there. I might have to buy it too!

Saxby D. Elder, Thursday, 1 March 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

those two records are right at 74 minutes total, so...huh? I got rid of my old complete big beat CD and burned the two records from the fantasy reissue, because those liner notes, where the guy berates alex chilton for not continuing to make records that geir hongro will like, are just stupid. in the words of robert gordon, people who have this big problem with alex chilton's "like flies on sherbert" are dickheads with bad record collections, or, what he didn't say but implies, they're dickheads who really really BELIEVE in their record collections. in "perfection" and the chiming twelve-strings that transcendeth sense. so as I always say, geir (and I love a lot of the same pop touchstones you do, man)--have fun!

anyway, radio city is A+; #1 record is an A-. because I don't quite love "my life is right" or "try again." whereas trax on the second record like "she's a mover" and "mod lang" are just as cool as the big statements like "sept. gurls" and "back of a."

whisperineddhurt, Thursday, 1 March 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

That's the only Big Star CD I own. I thought most people owned this, as opposed to the 2 albums seperately, but I guess I'm wrong? Yeah, don't cut anything. It's all there. Buy an 80 minute CDR. They're 99 cents at FYE.

billstevejim, Thursday, 1 March 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

So is the SACD version worth getting if you don't have an SACD player?

Jazzbo, Thursday, 1 March 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure the current single-disk version has everything. CD capacity has been at 80 minutes for some time now. No need to buy a SACD.

nickn, Friday, 2 March 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)
