What was the last thing you heard which you surprised yourself by enjoying?

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just downloaded the Massive Attack/Mos Def collaboration. Pedigree here:

i) Tons of people have said it's boring.

ii) I don't like Massive Attack or Mos Def.

iii) It's blatantly Dan Perry music and so I must treat it with the suspicion I reserve for ICP, the Cure and Alicia Keys ;)

But I LIKE IT! Quite a lot! Wow!

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a flock of seagulls

gareth, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a couple of haven songs

vantasma, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The No Doubt album, the new one with the Sprouse-ish cover, whatever it's called.

Arthur, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alicia Keys? Maybe Dan was feverish.

While I figured I would like that there Apoptygma Berzerk album, I was honestly blown away by how utterly fantastic itself. I thought I might be getting at most vaguely retro Wax Trax! jollies and instead found one goddamn great collection of songs.

As for No Doubt, I stumbled across part of that "Hey Baby" song the other day while mall-wandering and was put off by its sheer nondescriptness. Why all the praise for this nothing?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

utterly fantastic itself

My new favorite phrase. Maybe *I'm* feverish.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because it's ace, you silly old goth.

(Mind you Pete and Emma agree with you.)

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

whatever it's called.
Rock Steady. And yes, it's quite good. I especially like the Ocasek and Sly 'n' Robbie produced tunes. The Prince contribution was a bit... of... a LETDOWN.

nathalie, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the Prince collaboration. I love most of the album actually. And yes the cover is Sprouse-ish.

Sean, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

VINDICATION! Although you might have to take Alicia Keys off that list depending on how I react when I finally hear her version of "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore" (which, if anything, should shut up some of the criticism of all of her piano playing being variations on "Chopsticks").

I think the last thing I heard which surprised me was a bunch of OMD covers. I've never gotten into OMD with the exception of 1985-86, when "If You Leave" and _The Pacific Age_ came out. (To this day, I still think "Forever Live And Die" is the best song they ever put out.) Listening to other people's interpretations of the songs shows me that there's a core to them that OMD's inherent Vince Clarkishness was causing me to miss. I almost want to hear the originals now. ALMOST.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because it's ace, you silly old goth.

Hey Tom, remember how in 1995 you were surrounded by Oasis tunes that supposedly defined a sense of 'Britishness' that everyone had? Now transpose '2002, 'No Doubt' and 'Orange Countyness' in that sentence and imagine how I feel about those idiots.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Doubt doesn't make me think of Orange County. They make me think of jumping out of my seat and dancing until I drop.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They make me think about blowing up Fascist Island.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, that's fun, too!

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, with *them* in it.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That single, "They-Say Vision" by Res. The fact that she's an uber- babe with a spectacular midriff had nothing to do with it, I assure you.

The fact that I found whatever the name of the new single by Lil Bow Wow is to be listenable makes me want to go put on a hair shirt and chastise myself thoroughly until I'm cleansed.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You'll be singing "Bootylicious" before you know it.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hold not thy breath on that one.

Destiny's Child still make me want to gargle with mine own filth.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(The secret plan is working! Release the Backstreet Boys!)

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That Shakira song isnt bad actually. Maybe its those pan pipes. or her ass. I also like Elton John's last 2 singles as well....the intro to Blue's "Fly by" had my foot-tapping...

michael bourke, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Doubt make me feel like jumping up out of my seat and dancing out through the nearest fifteenth story window.

John Darnielle, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A fine way of putting it.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, not that much of a suprise, but a couple weeks ago someone gave me a tape of instrumental music made using only guitar and cello, which I assumed I wouldn't like much, but it turned out to be only a little bit rubbish (when trying to 'rock out'), and even fairly intriguing in parts (when exploring the textural/timbral[sp?] side of things).

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That Holly Valance single. There's something about it's Turkishness that I like.

And No, I haven't seen the video. But I want to...

Nick Southall, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kylie

Honda, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait a minute, Ewing! Since when don't you like Massive Attack? They're #16 and #26 on your '90's singles list, and #42 on your album list! What happened?

(Incidentally, you hear it as "love is a doing word" ? I hear it as "love is a dueling word.")

Michael Daddino, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Martika - 'Toy Soldiers' on TOTP 2 on Monday. What a chorus!

Dr. C, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I watched the Princess Superstar video (the babysitting one) a couple of nights ago and despite her terrible terrible rapping I kind of enjoyed it. Not sure if it was the video or the catch-i-ness of the chorus, but something appealed to me.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sum 41's "In Too Deep", dEUS

Jeff W, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Since about midway through 2000, Mike. :) I still like those songs. That albums list really needs deleting because it's so out of whack now.

Tom, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Streets, I suppose. I don't like garage that much, and from the reviews I was sort of fearing a joke record, but it's not, it's brilliant.

Okay, that's not actually true, as the first review from Tim Finney gave me enough hope, but I was pleasantly surprised: so many things that are supposed to rock are just all right.

Actually: Andrew WK and the Moldy Peaches really surprised me by just how good the songs were, beneath the layers of great/terrible production.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That albums list really needs deleting because it's so out of whack now.

Don't delete it! Re-do it!

Michael Daddino, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha too late. I'll replace it with an unordered favourite albums list though. Maybe.

Tom, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Parts of Shakira's album. But then (similar to Andrew's experience above) Frank Kogan's review had preconditioned me into giving it a chance.

Tim, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just listening to the new Elvis Costello album with no expectations at all. And it's quite nice.

JoB, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll second the new Elvis Costello single, which I heard and thought it was one of his older songs that I hadn't heard before. Also, "Can't Get You Out of My Mind" by Kylie, which I was expecting very little of when I sampled it for Focus Group V and which has wedged itself into my head.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, the irony. Heh.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ding ding ding ding!
