I'm completely clueless here. I don't follow the scene at all, but I'm trying to make an inroads. I have most of the Daft Punk & Basement Jaxx albums and would like to dig a little deeper. I know I like Daft better than Jaxx if that helps. So could you recommend some house classics, hot new shit, personal favorites. Thank you.

Both acts have aged (well or not? sideline) but you could probably start with more producers from France & Britain. Digital-sounding, filtered, sample-heavy & riff-laden technoid house. Who cares.

yeah, try some frenchie stuff. also, i think mixes are excellent for this sort of thing. if you want to hear some newer things, subscribe to the Resident Advisor podcasts, which range in quality and genre, but might help give you a better idea of what yr into.

Shouldn't a definition of the difference between House and Techno be offered?

I think it was Mike Grant who said House is more a drum machine accompanied by a keyboard or two, whereas Techno is keyboards accompanied by a drum machine. Or something like that.

Not sure that holds up over time but it seemed true to me at one point.

can some house dudes drown this thread in youtubes? came to the realization the other night that some of my favourite music are big crossover house vocals of the past couple years (happy house, azari & ill) yet i've never bothered to find more. this is me saying that i'm ready for more

I find I prefer the stuff at the margins of house and electro house or house and vocal trance, but I haven't a clue how to avoid the cheese... I find a lot of Ultra Records stuff is a guilty pleasure... Mea culpa.
