wow, you can post a new question w/o a body?!

jaxon, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

anyways, looking for good soundtracks. been totally digging the Roy Budd Final Option soundtrack lately. lots of driving electronic and disco-rock tracks. also really dig the John Carpenter albums i've heard, and a few Tangerine Dream albums.

jaxon, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

oh, and of course the Midnight express soundtrack

jaxon, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

The excerpt I heard from Moroder's soundtrack for Metropolis had a killer bassline.

no-nonsense, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

Wrote this not long ago but it's in French, not to mention "for dummies". So I'd add cheezoids W. Carlos & P. Vangelis to those already mentioned in this thread & era.

blunt, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

Electric Dreams

Pye Poudre, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

Well, R. Sakamoto in the 80's also

blunt, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

tangerine dream - firestarter

nice QA on the empty bodied question there, jaxon!

chaki, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

woah you can submit an answer with no body too! woo!

chaki, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

a blog recently posted a bit of the italo soundtrack to De Palma's Body Double, or maybe it's only that part, but I've always loved it. It's by Pino Donaggio.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

i should get the Tangerine Dream score for Risky Business (or maybe just more of their 70s stuff)

blueski, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

the shining one is good...hard to get in full tho...

Ronan, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

hey dan, that Body Double link is expired (stoopid yousendit). would you remind reupping it?

jaxon, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 00:19 (eighteen years ago)

L'Apocalypse des Animaux by Vangelis is one of my favorites. Particularly the second side of the album. A really, really beautiful soundtrack.

ah, forgot i had this. thanks, need to pull it out.

jaxon, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah...and the REAL soundtrack, not the one with the non-Carlos stuff on it but the one with the full version of Timesteps and more vocoder madness...I found that for like 50 cents somewhere.

Goblin! most 70s stuff i've heard is good, my favourite is Suspiria

zappi, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 07:09 (eighteen years ago)

christian bruhns soundtrack to timm thaler, a german kids tv show from late70s/early 80s (finally got reissued a couple years ago)

i cant remember if its you, jaxon, that isn't a fan of the get carter soundtrack. no, i think its alex in sf. i find this quite inexplicable

of course i still think all the francois de roubaix soundtracks are amazing, though some of them were only 7" soundtracks, some of which are on the reissues, some are not. as usual with stuff like this, the reissues and comps are seemingly arbitrary in what sees a release

688, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

If you like the John Carpenter stuff, check out the soundtrack to Friday the 13th Part 3... the theme , by Hot Ice, is absolutely killer. It's like Disco Carpenter!

Ben Boyerrr, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

halloween iii: season of the witch!

688, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah...and the REAL soundtrack, not the one with the non-Carlos stuff on it but the one with the full version of Timesteps and more vocoder madness...I found that for like 50 cents somewhere.

WORD. and the pickwick records version that is just some dude with a synthesizer pretending to be carlos and playing jive-ass versions of all of the songs, too.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

Barbarella!

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

"i cant remember if its you, jaxon, that isn't a fan of the get carter soundtrack. no, i think its alex in sf. i find this quite inexplicable"

No, I like the main theme quite a bit (god really who couldn't like that.) There is some definite chaff on the complete soundtrack though.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

I used to own this, it's a soundtrack to some documentary I've never seen. Even though it's by Jack De Johnette, it's almost totally electronic, with just a couple of trumpet solos from Lester Bowie. I wish I could find another copy, it's great.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Another obvious one that JaX0n probably already has:

La Planet Sauvage (The Fantastic Planet)

Some more italo horror too:

The Beyond
Zombi 2
Libra{/i]

And of course Popol Vuh:

[i]Aguire, The Wrath of God
Fitzcarraldo
Nosferatu

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

La Planet Sauvage is great but theres nothing really 'electronic' about it.

chaki, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't there? I need to listen again (it has been a while.) I thought there was a lot of keyboard stuff on it. I blame Ninja Tune and Mo' Wax for making me think otherwise if I am wrong.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

This has a good one, good luck finding a soundtrack:

Edward III, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

Shock Waves is on the creepy droning end of the spectrum.

Aguirre, yes!

Edward III, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

some dude with a synthesizer pretending to be carlos

some dude, but that WAS Wendy Carlos!

sorry.

Barbarella Soundtrack care of Bob Gaudio, the genius behind the Four Seasons. Or was the Bob Crewe?

dan selzer, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

Crewe, I think.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

yes i remember it was you now alex, and its your disliking of the other tracks that i find inexplicable, hallucinations and getting nowhere in a hurry are just amazing, love the pub version of how about you as well

i will listen to cyrus faryar tonite!

688, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

La Planet Sauvage is great but theres nothing really 'electronic' about it.

I think there are more electronic sounds in the actual movie than there are on the soundtrack album.

walterkranz, Thursday, 1 March 2007 04:31 (eighteen years ago)

some dude, but that WAS Wendy Carlos!

heh. no, i'm talking about the ghetto cash-in version. "monte cross with the english festival orchestra - music from the movie a clockwork orange."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/rankingmonkey/ilx/montecross-clockworkorange.jpg

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 1 March 2007 06:48 (eighteen years ago)

From what I can gather I'd say that The Warriors might fit the bill.

kv_nol, Thursday, 1 March 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

I was kidding about the wendy/walter misunderstanding.

dan selzer, Thursday, 1 March 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

Dan: Care to comment on those unique soundtracks to Norman McLaren's amazing NFB shorts - the ones he created by physically scratching 'em onto the very film stock itself?

I know you raved in "I Love Everything" about some boxed-set you aquired awhile back

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 1 March 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

haven't heard them in a while, lent out the box set to someone ages ago. It was pretty awesome, lots of bloops and bleeps. Was that the tech where the audio would be recorded visually or magnetically?

dan selzer, Thursday, 1 March 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I've seen the McLaren films but Oskar Fischinger did a similar thing by putting wavy lines & stuff onto the optical soundtrack and it made nice primitive synthesized noises. Maybe it's a similar thing?

walterkranz, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, that's totally it. If it was a magnetic soundtrack and you scratched it it probably would sound all crappy, not bloopy bleepy.

dan selzer, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

the soundtrack to the Long Good Friday is very nice.

jaxon, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

lipstick. there is a super scarey song called the rapist.
that one by the guy from ymo and it has the song merry christmas mr. something or other.. i can;t remember the name of the movie.

speculator, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

yeah but what is the name of the movie? no google allowed.

speculator, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

Some more italo horror too:

The Beyond
Zombi 2
Libra

Haven't heard of Libra- who/what is it?

Telephone thing, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

The American title is Shock.

Also the name of the movie is Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.

Alex in SF, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

are you sure? i have a record and it has that and it has some japanese name like wakatakahashi, but not really.. like embryo or hiro or something.. i can;t be arsed to look for it though..

doesn;t francis lai have a couple of weirdo electroniccy songs?

speculator, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

Well okay the Japanese title might be "Senjou no Merii Kurisumasu", but most of us are going to know it by the English name (esp. since it was a British movie.)

Alex in SF, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

I'll second the Francois De Roubaix stuff. There are 2 comps that focus on his electronic work that I love to pieces.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

Mr Lawrence is also called Furyo in some countries.

By Shock do you mean the creepy late Mario Bava movie about the possessed kid?

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

yes! furyo!!

speculator, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

Really one of my favorite classic electronic records of all time. I'm pretty sure Creel Pone reissued this on CD, but it's not as cool as the hexagonal record version.

I don't think it was ever released as an album, but the soundtrack to Eric Rohmer's Chloe in the Afternoon is amazing. I remember it sounding like a Mika Vainio solo record.

William Selman, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 03:27 (eighteen years ago)

Aargh. Image dead above. Anyways, it was The Andromeda Strain by Gille Melle.

William Selman, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

wow already pino donaggio's had a mention.

man his soundtrack to de palma's BLOW OUT is amazing. simply amazing.
and real *sad* too man.

(slsk ssshhhh)

pisces, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 03:47 (eighteen years ago)

but it's not as cool as the hexagonal record version.

NOTHING IS! great soundtrack, too, yeah. there was a japanese real cd reissue of it a few years back, too.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...
I must say that the "Planet Terror" soundtrack from the new Grindhouse movie is a loving homage to this style of music. Some very moogy / moody action produced by Robert Rodriguez, Graeme Revell, and others. Also, this "Planet Cinematic" podcast has a cool electronic 70's section about midway through.

Dougie Chimes, Monday, 16 April 2007 05:44 (eighteen years ago)

John Carpenter's soundtrack to Assault on Precinct 13, though I'm not sure if it was ever actually released. Definite classic, though.

lucas pine, Monday, 16 April 2007 06:26 (eighteen years ago)

oh, Carpenter's already been cited a few times upthread. deserved a mention regardless!

lucas pine, Monday, 16 April 2007 06:30 (eighteen years ago)

very cool, and looking through one of the links in that post it looks like the Precinct 13 score was released after all, but only four years ago? krazy

that is my blog ;)

JW, Monday, 16 April 2007 07:54 (eighteen years ago)

Dunno how electric you could claim it is, but Mike Oldfield's theme for "Killing Fields" was absolutely beautiful.

i saw this last night and was so stoked on the soundtrack to the rodriguez part. totally sounded like john carpenter or goblin. GOOD JOB BUDDY!

Kind of astounded no one's mentioned Jerry Goldsmith yet...? He used synths heavily alongside orchestra throughout the 70s in scores like Logan's Run, but his first all-electronic score was for the Tom Selleck sci-fi vehicle Runaway and it's fucking awesome. His score for Hoosiers is also pure synth, in a more pop mode, and equally awesome.

Also search search search Christopher Young's score for Haunted Summer.

Morricone's score for L'Humanoid too!

five minutes of iguana time (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

What year's that Tomorrow's World theme from? It's great, particularly the bit that first comes in at 0.45.

I am flesh and blood. You are software and circuitry. (chap), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

Carpenter really is the Man for this. In addition to the scores already mentioned, there are several Italo-ish things he did -- "The Bank Robbery" from Escape from New York, "Christine Part 2" from Christine and (my personal fave) "Unheimliche Schattenlichter" from Dark Star which is just this great thumping arpeggiated LinnDrum jam.

Also, I'm w Geir on Oldfield's score to The Killing Fields -- some great Fairlight stuff on that.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

Im a big fan of Nico Fidenco's soundtrack for Emanuelle and the last Cannibals which was also rehashed as Zombie Holocaust, some great primitive drum machine sketches and the uptempo version of the the 'Make Love on the Wing' is amazing

id also heartily recommend Johny Trunk's show on resonance FM for amazing soundtrack headscratchers. The show with Moon Wiring Club is unbeliveable
