Not including Christmas, but taking inspiration from Tom's thread about Xmas songs.

So for me it's a trio of albums -- Skylarking by XTC, Big Lizard in My Backyard by the Dead Milkmen and Pure by the Primitives -- that I can only listen to in the summer months. Reason being that I got these all around the same time, freshman year at UCLA, as spring became summer. So the effect is partly nostalgic, but also because something about all three of them (XTC mostly blatantly due to "Summer's Cauldron") call up warm, golden evenings and a pleasant contentment, in a strange, hazy way.

Suede - Dog Man Star requires a *very* specific time and place.

i'm a total seasons fascist. i seriously doubt i could listen to low birth weight in the summer...it's purely october-january music for me. likewise, most pop gets shelved between those same months. something about the cold just makes it hard to take...

jess, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not so much a seasonal thing but for me erik satie for instance can only be listened to in the afternoon.

and hefner are good for early evening train rides.

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

which hefner?!

There are certain albums that simply sound better or are more appropriate for certain season. Bjork's Vespertine and Goldfrapp's Felt Mountain were made for the winter, I think, whereas I'd much rather listen to some of Squarepusher's psychotic drum 'n bass (Go Plastic and Big Loada for instance) in the spring/summer.

I generally listen to "Pinkerton" on warm days when I'm feeling bored, angry/apathetic, empty and girl-less.

The most summery music, for me, may be soca. Nonethless, it's also good 'cheer up!' music for dismal days. I'd rarely listen to Ben Webster other than late at night. Tom Waits too. Mostly, I'm pretty flexible.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Man, Ned was completely spot-on with XTC's SKYLARKING. Good call!

For relatively easy-to-surmise reasons, I don't believe Reggae should be listened to in the Fall or Winter. "96 Degrees in the Shade" just doesn't sound right while you're shovelling snow off your stoop.

When I fly, I listen to Scott3 or Scott4. They transport me somewhere else. I suppose I'm cheating a little here, but I can listen to these records at other times too.

Some Brian Eno (music for airports/films)I listen to only at the very end of the day when my body is shutting down. The same with Ken Nordine.

Big Star 'Sister Lovers' - Summer Evenings

Scott Walker 'Til the band comes in' when I'm a little high or drunk and laying in bed in absolute peace about 5am, when dawn is creeping.

vantasma, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i enjoy bossa nova most on breezy summer nights

Hm, so far on this thread it seems to be summer = upbeat music = summer. Yeah sure, me too, but in the summer months I really tend to prefer more gentler, simpler rythems. Beth Orton's 'Central Reservation' (fr'instance) has that woozy summer haze; languid, langourous, lazy.
Too hot to bop. Can't move from my chair. Summer! Ahhh, relax.

Some Brian Eno (music for airports/films)I listen to only at the very end of the day when my body is shutting down.

Labradford is PERFECT for that too. I can only listen to them at night.

lots of music is full of emotions, and either change the mood I'm in, or let me immerse deeper into a mood. I always pick music depending on my moods, and sometimes it hits the sweet-spot, and the music is so much better. ----- I usually only listen to Swans, Merzbow, or GvsB when I'm mad or what to scare myself. Also I only like hip-hop when it's very late at night and on BET.

I can only listen to Slowdive's "Catch the breeze" on a rainy day

i bust out shudder to thinks' soundtrack for the movie "first love, last rights" whenever i'm in such a bad mood that i wanna puke. comforting i guess.

dyson, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Besides "Summer's Cauldron" and "Grass" which seem like obvious summer songs, the rest of Skylarking seems more spring-y to me. The rainy tracks in the middle and the sense of cycles seem like a very spring thing.

I love the one Enya CD I have (Paint the Sky With Stars), but it requires playing in the daytime with a view of the outside. It doesn't work for me at any other time.

For some reason all those New Zealand pop records I have only get radio time on foggy/rainy weekend days. The Bats, especially. The fact that I'm never awake during the day anymore means I don't listen to this stuff much anymore which is really too bad.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't explain when but sometimes I think Shalabi Effects double cd is the greatest thing since sliced bread other times I can't even finish On The Bowery.

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick Drake/RL Burnside for hangovers The Saints/Snivelling Shits for severe withdrawals

Harry H, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only play Radiohead on my stereo when I immediately leave the house after putting it on.

nathalie, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Beatles - Rubber Soul (US lp version)(autumn)

Sting - Mercury Falling (winter)

David Sylvian - Dead Bees on a Cake (spring)

seven months pass...
"Astral Weeks" always sounds the best when I'm alone, with the sun coming up.

Jim M, Sunday, 1 December 2002 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I can only listen to Joy Division at lunch-time. No, really. I don't know why.

Callum (Callum), Monday, 2 December 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Enjoyment of Sigur Ros is very mood-reliant for me. Not sure how to define that particular mood, though.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 2 December 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

'Emotionally pliable' perhaps?

Callum (Callum), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Vivaldi's The Four Seasons (the classical thingy) only in the morning for some reason, don't care what season it is.
