Will it be really 'Chinese Democracy"? And what else could be in content? "Loveless"? "Song Cycle"? "A Night At The Opera"?

Loveless isn't even gonna come close. How much was that Jacko one about four or five years ago?

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

I'd always heard that it was "Gaucho".

Does the Blue Monday 12" count, or are we discounting packaging costs??

"The Seeds Of Love" by Tears For Fears was extremely expensive. Dunno if it beats "Aja" and "Gaucho" with all their session stars, but it is sure up there.

But, I mean, "Aja"? With several top class session musicians hired, and then several (possibly most?) of their contributions just ditched from the final mix. Surely must be close to it.

Btw. I mean, I suppose this is a question of the cost of the actual recording.

If you are speaking of the most expensive album (as in actual retail price) ever sold (discounting special editions), then I guess "Music For Supermarkets" by Jarre comes close. After the recording, he pressed just one vinyl album and then burned all the mastertapes, making the only existing copy of the album quite a collector's item.

.. if you like that sort of thing!

Def Leppard spent $1 million on just the demo recordings for Adrenalize, but I don't have solid information on how much the actual album cost to record.

The most expensive album to make and promote was Garth Brooks' The Life of Chris Gaines. Capitol never officially acknowledged the expense accounts on it, but once you add in the TV special, the aborted film, and all the secondary promotion it totaled out to roughly $1.7 million per song.

It's gotta be Smile.

"Btw. I mean, I suppose this is a question of the cost of the actual recording"

Yes, it is. Gene Simmons' solo album could be a close call too.
