Boston Phoenix on VVM

This is the fairest piece I've seen yet on the new Village Voice Media and on what it's like to work for them. Lots of good, lots of bad, with a perfect quote from ex-OC editor Will Swaim:

“I took them at their word when they said they really like what I do,” says Will Swaim, the ex-publisher and editor of OC Weekly. “And my sense is, if you like what I do, leave me the fuck alone. That was not their sense. For them, process is very important.”

This is also the one piece where everyone on all sides comes across as looking good. Except for Andy Van de Voorde -- his must be the loneliest job in the world.

You are Mike Lacey, and I claim my $5.

This confirms that the P&J intro was written by Jensen and then rejected.

Mark Rich@rdson, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

It does say "purportedly".

Alex in SF, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah you're right. Though that it was being considered for publication, whoever the author was, is asserted . Which seems significant.

Mark Rich@rdson, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

I think the disclosure that Jensen was once the Boston's paper's editor serves as a pseudoconfirmation that he wrote that lame essay.
“he did it by saying, ‘This guy was kicking our ass for the competition, so we figured it was a good idea to hire him to go kick other people’s asses.’ That’s emblematic of how they do things. It’s this kind of cheapskate-tough-guy swagger.”
lol
