Are B*Witched defensible on any level?

One of the cable channels is running a permanent playlist of "ha ha let's laugh at bad number ones" at the moment, but between all the irksome smirking they do play "C'Est La Vie" which....

a) it's kind of hard to imagine any band being like this anyway, a group of women in their early 20s pretending to be a bunch of six year olds
b) if I was Irish I think I'd hate B*Witched more than any band ever, thanks to all of that American-tourist-in-a-theme-pub level of representation of their culture. All those ad libs "I foight like me darrrr", "What are you loike?", "The blood of Bobby Sands must be avenged"

Four number one singles, you know? Fuck me.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 2 March 2007 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

I don't remember anything about them beyond:
1/the logo with the little star
2/a really badly photoshopped pic of them that looked memorably nightmarish
3/the "none of those bitches can sing" thing

Pashmina, Friday, 2 March 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

Four number one singles, you know? Fuck me.

That's not really saying anything though, is it?

tissp, Friday, 2 March 2007 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

The lead singer also looked like she should be a presenter of Loose Women.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 2 March 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

they were great. shut up.

Alan, Friday, 2 March 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

"what is 'e loike' diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly

Alan, Friday, 2 March 2007 10:58 (eighteen years ago)

This track was very representative of how I remember Irish giruls..

They'd be very "I'll show you mine if you show me yours"

Then someone'd put on "Riverdance" and they'd all be "Oh, I can do this" and they'd be off doing that legdance and that'd be it for the evening.

Classic, obv.

i gave my copy of the b*witched album to my 13 year-old niece a couple of months ago and she totally loves it. "how old is it?" she said. "oh, not that long ago," i replied, then realising it came out in 1999 (?), when she was FIVE. heh.

three great songs, anyway, and that's more than can be said for...fuckloads of people. plus, at least 2.5 of them were cute. which is nice.

CharlieNo4, Friday, 2 March 2007 11:05 (eighteen years ago)

I bought the first album at a service station once. I was travelling around cooking fast food on stalls at various festivals around the south-west. Bored of the tapes I had with me, I was craving new sounds, so I bought this. I liked 'C'est La Vie' and 'Rollercoaster' and 'Blame it on the Weatherman'. The other songs were a bit shit as I recall.

Punkest Band Around!

Hi xhuxk, it's good to see you around here!

Dom are you referring to "Cheesy Pop Songs - 1986 - 2006" on The Hits? I thought it was a great show - 2Unlimited, Reynolds Girls, etc. There were a few that I would have skipped - "(I'm) Too Sexy" or whatever, ditto the Cheeky Girls, never card for the nouveau-Ting Tang Walla Walla Bing Bang, either - but the whole thing was worth it for my own personal revelation that Lily Allen is the modern version of Vanilla!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 2 March 2007 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

no way

(no wai!)

Alan, Friday, 2 March 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

haha brilliant! although who could kate nash possibly be then...

lex pretend, Friday, 2 March 2007 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

1) When my band first started out, one of our aims in life was to snort snuff from the belly-buttons of B*Witched.
2) I once spotted them in a Wimpy in Watford Gap services. The giddy heights of fame.

emil.y, Friday, 2 March 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)

"Rollercoaster" was kind of OK.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 2 March 2007 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

Alan they both pay homage to Neneh Cherry, they both flaunt unabashed London accents, they're both obsessed with knocking back the wrong kind of boy, they both have "chatty" sections in their songs, and they both set their lyrics to music made famous by other groups!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 2 March 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

that could equally apply to MIA.

lex pretend, Friday, 2 March 2007 13:05 (eighteen years ago)

Whatever happened to Whigfield tho? *deep sigh*

Tom D., Friday, 2 March 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

Whigfield was class. Bring back Aqua as well! There is not a hint of irony or anything in this post, I really do like aqua and "Saturday Night" is a great song.

kv_nol, Friday, 2 March 2007 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

whigfield did a really good schaffel-pop track a few years ago! it was called 'was a time'.

lex pretend, Friday, 2 March 2007 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

Oh good, she's still around! She was teh gorgeous.

Tom D., Friday, 2 March 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

Whigfield was absolutely awful. Aqua had their moments in very small doses.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 2 March 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

all the bands mentioned on this thread are awful apart from lily allen.

the next grozart, Friday, 2 March 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

'Jump Down' under-rated.

blueski, Friday, 2 March 2007 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

Whigfield is now Sannie Carlson

braveclub, Friday, 2 March 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

I like Lily Allen a lot better than Vanilla, FWIW, which isn't a back-handed compliment

Tracer Hand, Friday, 2 March 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

"Saturday Night" by Whigfield, I thought was great and still think so. I bought the follow-up, the title of which I forget, and it was crap. Shrill & chipmunkish vocals, ugh.

Whigfield/Sannie is still hott!

Pashmina, Friday, 2 March 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

"all the bands mentioned on this thread are awful apart from lily allen"

WRONG.

Matt DC, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

Whigfield = the Scandipop its okay for Lex to like?

Matt DC, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

BLAME IT ON THE WEATHERMAN WAS A GREAT SONG

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 2 March 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

Dom are you referring to "Cheesy Pop Songs - 1986 - 2006" on The Hits?

Nah, "Awfully Bad Number Ones" on Magic. "Young at Heart" gets a lot of play, as does "Begin the Beguine".

Dom Passantino, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

I think there are way worse symptoms of the late-90s mock-craic boom than B*Witched, most of them involving pubs and shamrock hats.

Groke, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

Sham Rock's "Tell Me Ma" is a fucking anthem.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 2 March 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

i still stand by my "they were great. shut up." post

Alan, Friday, 2 March 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)
