Premier still on a roll
Rakim still sounds incredible
kanye's verse is utterly forgettable
Nas's verse is eh so so
KRS sounds pretty good!

deej, Saturday, 3 March 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

KRS actually sounds kind of generic but i was getting ready to hate his verse

deej, Saturday, 3 March 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

Really if this was just a Rakim song over this beat I wouldn't be mad at all

deej, Saturday, 3 March 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

I actually like (prepares for sonning) Kanye's verse best. Nas' & Rakim's are pretty good, too. KRS' verse bugs me shitless. I like the part of the vid w/ Prem putting the beat together. The beat really isn't anything special, though. It sounds just like most of the beats on The Ownerz. The problem with this is it sets my backpacker guilt into hyper-drive, so half of me wants to instictually hate it.

The Reverend, Saturday, 3 March 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

Goddamn I wish I wasn't at work so I could hear this.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 3 March 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

Agreeing with Deej on this one.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 3 March 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

krs-one really needs to stop saying shit like "the difference between mcin and rappin"

max, Saturday, 3 March 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

but deej otm--rakim owns this track in a way that the other three can't match

man if i was still in HS i would have creamed over this shit

max, Saturday, 3 March 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

krs' verse starts out good w/ the part about who owns criminal minded etc. but starts getting shitty with 'instead of smoking trees, more local MCs!' and the stuff about the difference between rappers and MCs like he's a 15 year old who just discovered a message board

deej, Monday, 5 March 2007 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

haha just heard it for the first time and deej largely otm

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 5 March 2007 05:38 (eighteen years ago)

I kinda like the "I don't need 'em/I got your respect" line -- good delivery.

Otherwise yeah, Rakim is the best one on the track. Kanye and Nas sound like they just don't want to use up any of their better rhymes.

The part where the beat drops out under Rakim actually gave me a little chill, because he really does look and sound aged when he says "age don't count in the booth/when your flow stays submerged in the fountain of youth" which gives the line this awesome shade of meaning.

Hurting 2, Monday, 5 March 2007 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

i saw krs-one speak at my school a couple years ago and the guy is really just a 16-year-old rap snob. and what a weird set of artificial distinctions he continues to make! hip hop vs rap, mcing vs rapping, WTF kris.

max, Monday, 5 March 2007 07:08 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know, I always get this weird twinge of doubt when I hear those kinds of criticisms coming from guys like KRS or Rakim. It's like Marx coming back from the dead and insisting that guys who call themselves Marxists aren't really Marxists.

Obviously there are massive holes in this analogy and feel free to mock me etc, just saying.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 5 March 2007 07:16 (eighteen years ago)

KRS didn't invent rap; he was just pretty good at it.

max, Monday, 5 March 2007 08:15 (eighteen years ago)

It's like Marx coming back from the dead and insisting that guys who call themselves Marxists aren't really Marxists.

If I remember correctly, Marx said "I'm not a marxist" while he was still alive.

But yeah, I agree with everyone that Rakim totally steals this show. He should do a full album with Primo.

Tuomas, Monday, 5 March 2007 09:08 (eighteen years ago)

The funny thing is that Rakim is only a year older than, say, Jay-Z, and five years older than Nas. I still can't believe he was only 18 when Paid in Full came out.

Tuomas, Monday, 5 March 2007 09:15 (eighteen years ago)

I think you can criticize rap of today for many things, but this purity of genre argument is always a cop-out, even when coming from one of the supposed pioneers. It's like Derrick May complaining how Europeans turned his lovely vision into hedonistic drug music. When you put music out into the world, you have to accept the fact that it'll take a life of it's own from that point on.

Tuomas, Monday, 5 March 2007 09:28 (eighteen years ago)

over the weekend i happened to hear two all-star collab hip-hop tracks for the first time, this and the dj khaled/t.i./rick ross/birdman/lil wayne one. one of them sounded fresh and vital and completely fucking cool, and had a massive sonic BOOM of a beat which made me want to dance. the other was kind of bleh and whiny and the beat was boring.

Nice, I've never heard the 1,2 Pass It remix. KRS One in top form. Mad Lion with what may be hip-hops only Captain Caveman reference. Jeru closing out the track with the multi-level awfulness of "We bring more drama than Kevin Costner/No I'm not Jamaican, but yes I'm a Rasta"

Hurting 2, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

I liked the original beat too though. Don't even know which I like better now.

T/S: Costner vs. TNT

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

The way Kanye starts his verse just has no energy. His flow next to Rakim's, yikes.

mcddcm, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

yeah putting Kanye in that context is really unflattering, beyond him being by far the youngest guy on the song he's just out of his league as a rapper. the beat is great, though!

I'm starting to treat whatever rap-related thread is on the first page as the 'rolling rap thread' at that particular moment.

So this rich boy album kind of sucks.

deej, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

did we talk about throw some d's? dyou like it?

max, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

deej did you listen to that Skillz/Freeway song on allhiphop? love it.

haha speaking of the canon, "danger zone" by Big L just came up on my itunes...the canon rules!

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

"Throw Some D's" is a great single, for the beat more than Rich Boy. I like Soulja Boy's version more, maybe:
http://www.myspace.com/souljaboytellem
listen to "Just Got My Report Card"

The album has some good beats scattered throughout but it more shows that polow da don isn't a great exec producer (i'm assuming he is one based on his contributions and co-producer contributions)

deej, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't heard the Free/Skillz song...link?

and what, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

deej, i heard it on allhiphop.com but no it looks like it was taken down...the song is called "Don't Act"....

it's in hiphopgame's audio section, halfway down..

also googled and found a zshare link, but i don't think we're supposed to post those on ILM.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

ugh I'm not entirely sure why but I hate that "front back" remake thing.

the Consequence album dropped this week, seems like it's going completely under the radar. anyone heard it?

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

I heard a couple tracks from the Consequnce album; my friend is really into it but I didn't think it was particularly memorable. It might be something that you need to listen to a couple times tho? I didn't love "Grammy Family" either.

max, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

i didn't hate that consequence single...it was the itunes free download of the week a little bit back.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

That's too bad abt the Rich Boy album. I still want to hear it--Polow da Don has been as consistent as anyone over the last 18 mos or so, although "Runaway" is really grating to me.

max, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

heres the tracklist on that consequence album

1. I Used To Love H.E.R. 2007
2. Bonita Applebum 2007
3. The Choice Is Yours 2007
4. Mecca and the Soul Brother 2007
5. T.R.O.Y. 2007
6. Itzsoweezee 2007
7. Jesus Walks 2007
8. Can I Kick It? 2007
9. Jazz (We've Got) 2007
10. I Left My Wallet in El Segundo 2007
11. Hot Sex 2007
12. Oh My God 2007
13. Stressed Out 2007

and what, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

"Front Back" is ... stable. I don't love it but its like, i remember rob them co posting some shit about how someone's music wanted to make him walk up and give it a firm handshake. Its like that.

I'm talking about the UGK song feat. T.I. produced by swizz -

more rap threads is a good thing in theory but honestly it just makes it harder to remember where we talked about certain things if we want to come back to the discussion later without repeating ourselves.
