The Angels from Angel City

Lots of scattered references, but no one thread to guide us...

My next door neighbor moved away today and left behind a large tin labeled "classical cd's, please take." Inside, along with a bunch of classical cds, I find ELO's Greatest Hits, a Robyn Hitchcock promo from the 90's, Marc Ribot's "Rootless Cosmopolitans", a Source sampler CD, a Grace Jones CD EP, etc. Ok, so it's pretty obvious that I lived next to someone who got promo CDs at some point.

In amongst it all is The Angels from Angel City "Beyond Salvation" which means I have the US release. Have done some googling, and get the general picture, but what's the next step?

indeed. sadly other than 'salvation' i only know some of the singles - which are generally pretty great. perhaps pick up a cheap greatest hits cd..

'no secrets' & 'am i ever gonna see your face again' are the best tracks, but there's definitely further gems in the catalogue

I've got seven or eights LPs by them; not going to list them here, since I've yet to hear a bad one. If you see an Angel City or Angels LP cheap, buy it. More consistent than AC/DC, when you get down to it (not sure I'd say that if Bon Scott had stayed alive, but he didn't, so there). Higher IQ than Rose Tattoo. It would be a tossup for me to figure out which band I like the most.

And for an update, here's an email I got from Leanne Kingwell Friday:

I did my stuff with The Angels and got to close out the show singing "Long Way To The Top" with Dave Evans, (the original lead singer of AC/DC. He's lives in the US and fronts a band called "Dave Evans and the Badasses"), Randall Waller (Shania Twain Band), Mark Evans (AC/DC bassist), Dave Tice (The Bishops, Headhunters, Buffalo), Alan Lancaster (Status Quo), John and Rick Brewster (The Angels) AND... are you ready for this... the twenty piece Scottish bagpipe and drum band that Bon Scott was in as a kid. We jammed for twenty minutes before the organizers pulled the plug to meet the noise curfew. What a rush!

A press release from a couple weeks ago, about an earlier set:

Leanne Kingwell Pops
The Angels Cherry
Melbourne Australia 12th February 2007

Legendary Australian rock outfit, The Angels re-introduced Leanne Kingwell to her hometown Melbourne audience by inviting her onstage to front them for a couple of numbers at their Cherry Bar gig in AC/DC lane last night.

Kingwell, the first woman to front the band in their thirty-plus year history, blew the packed and enthusiastic room away with powerhouse renditions of The Angels standards, Be with You and Shadow Boxer.

"Leanne not only made an impression vocally, but also visually with her rock-chick sassiness," The Angels drummer Buzz Bidstrup said. "From my perspective behind the kit, it's a nice change from looking at John Brewster's butt."

Kingwell first saw The Angels live 7 years ago at The Palace In St Kilda. She was one of half a dozen girls in an audience of about 1500 guys who knew The Angels lyrics verbatim. "That night got me thinking about creating some kick-butt rock 'n' roll that girls would dig as much as guys," says Leanne. "It's such cool Zen to now be onstage with The Angels. They inspired me to make a chick record with balls."

Leanne's album, "Show Ya What" is receiving major mainstream and college airplay in the U.S.A. and was listed in both the Village Voice and Billboard's Critics Choice Top Ten Albums of 2006.

"When Leanne Kingwell got up to sing with the Angels it was a magic moment for everyone," the Cherry Bar's James 'the hound-dog' Young tells. "Leanne got to play with her heroes for the first time ever and the band was invigorated by sharing the stage with a young star obviously so thrilled to be part of such an unexpected collaboration. Leanne's vocals were perfect for the band's hard edge."

Kingwell will be onstage with The Angels when they headline The Bon Scott Memorial Concert at the Claremont Showground in Perth on the 25th of February. Rose Tattoo, Party Boys and Screaming Jets are also on the bill.
