first edition of SWANS ca.1982, one awesome confrontational rumble. Lee Ranaldo did a few gigs on bass.

did rothko have guitars? i genuinely can't remember. liked them, though. should dig them out.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 5 March 2007 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

They used to be three basses and nothing else. Then as I understand it two of them left and the remaining bassist got in most of Delicate AWOL in on guitars, keyboards, drums, flute... which was a bit of a shame because that first lineup was really unique and amazing to see (also: LOUD) the one time I managed to see them live.

(looks around nervously because I believe one of the old members used to post here)

ah, rothko. I saw the three-bass lineup many times. amazing band. never heard any of their later stuff though...is it worthwhile?

m the g, Monday, 5 March 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

Rockapella (though one's really a baritone)

HI DERE, Monday, 5 March 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

Ornette Coleman's on "Sound Grammar."

Jazzbo, Monday, 5 March 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

Tortoise on the first album, wasn't it?

Mark Rich@rdson, Monday, 5 March 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

didn't antietam have this line-up at one point? no they couldn't have 'cause of tara key playing guitar... hmm this is harder than i thought.

Mike McGooney-gal, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

(Is it cheating to reference jazz bands?) John Coltrane, on some occasions -- e.g. some of the '61 Village Vanguard stuff. Often "double trio" or "double quartet" configurations feature two basses -- e.g. Ornette's Free Jazz or Charles Tyler's Saga of the Outlaws. Duke Ellington used two basses for awhile in the 30's.

you know I could've sworn this too, actually went looking and found no notice of them having two basses. maybe they did some gigs like this, or we're thinking of some other homestead band?

first edition of SWANS ca.1982, one awesome confrontational rumble. Lee Ranaldo did a few gigs on bass.

I thought swans first lineup was drums-bass-guitar, then thurston joined on second bass (they still had a guitarist, tho)? thurston's on 2nd bass on the speed trials comp.

Edward III, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

ganger.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

What's that Spinal Tap song which is THREE basses and no guitars?

yeah my memory is hazy hahaha. maybe it was the 2nd or 3rd lineup of Swans but I definitely saw them open for Sonic Youth @ Danceteria around spring of 82 w/Lee on 1 of 2 basses, can't remember the rest of the instrumentation, though I'm pretty sure they had guitar (s) too so MY BAD. I was at that Speed trials gig too but I must've been drunk cause I don't remember Swans there. the Fall had 2 drummers then....

m coleman, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

Two astounding New Zealand bands: YFC (aka Youth For Christ) and Eight Living Legs.

yep. we had wolf knapp on bass and tim harris on bass for the first 2 records on homestead. and my humble self on guitar. sometimes tim harris on guitar as well.

Once they rocked. But their contribution to Ballads of the Book sounds alarmingly like a post-rock Keane! : (

Brian Wilson - I'm sure he's using acoustic double bass and Carole Kaye on Fender in many of his production. Future Pilot Aka has copied this trick. High electric basslines with loads of reverb and slapback with a double bass to provide the root note heaviness.

you were at speed trials? JEALOUS

speed trials was 5 days long, The Fall played first night, Swans 3rd or 4th night?

and if you saw Swans in spring of '82 that's a pretty early gig, maybe even their first, Hanel on guitar. Jonathan Kane says their second gig was july of '82.

yep. we had wolf knapp on bass and tim harris on bass for the first 2 records on homestead.

hiya! (always thrilled when a band we're talking about posts, it's like magic - you say their name, they appear)

Edward III, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

goddamnit, new pi tag isn't working...

Edward III, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)
