The Idle Race C/D

Influenced by this thread, I thought I'd just make this thread because they deserve a mention. Obviously one of the most underrated bands ever? And surely Jeff Lynne did some great stuff way before ELO too.

They're pretty good. Not sure I place them anywhere near the best freakbeat/psych stuff though.

It looks like their stuff is being released on CD after being OOP for years. The 2CD complete collection thing that came out in '96 was ridiculously collectable for a while.

Only ever heard "Knocking Nails Into My House."

You've never heard "Imposters of Life's Magazine", Tim?!?! That seems hard to believe.

I was telling someone a couple of weeks ago that The Birthday Party makes Bee Gees' 1st sound like [I]Fun House{/I].

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 5 March 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

"Knocking Nails Into My House" (on Rubble Vol. 2) sounded like a pretty good Move soundalike but also a little cornball so I never checked them out further.

"Imposters of Life's Magazines" CLASSIC

Totally classic stuff! I brought them up in a recent thread about uniquely British music... they have that (uniquely British) whimsical quality that many people must hate but I really love it. Could be construed as "cornball", but I prefer "whimsy" to that.

I still have a thing for "I Like My Toys", which is so twee it is just genius. I mean, other than stuff like Mr. Blobby, Teletubbies or Bob The Builder, you cannot get much tweer, but that's exactly where the genius of that song lies. :)

pretty good Move soundalike

They're so much better than the Move! My Father's Son, Worn Red Carpet, The Morning Sunshine, On With The Show, Hurry Up John, Come With Me... I don't know, pretty much all of their songs are killer twee-as-fuck pop psych.

Amen, brother

haha, after reading that other thread I see that I should have just said Geir OTM. It feels so strange.

eight years pass...

Yes indeed, Geir otm.

Death of Keith Harris led me to dig out this song...

seven years pass...

It looks like their stuff is being released on CD after being OOP for years. The 2CD complete collection thing that came out in '96 was ridiculously collectable for a while.

I suppose it isn't anymore because I just got it secondhand for like six quid. After the first six tracks, the second CD is entirely superfluous as it's post-Jeff Lynne and pretty bad - unless you're interested in hearing boring lifeless versions of "In the Summertime" and "Neanderthal Man". Completism, eh?

i like the version the fall made of 'birthday'
