I Want Candy - Strangeloves
Time Won't Let Me - Outsiders
Little Girl - Syndicate of Sound
Steppin' Out - Paul Revere & The Raiders
I Love You So Much - New Colony Six

Most of the above are on Nuggets. I'm not sure how well the following answer your need for frantic shuffle and twang, but they all fill my head with pictures of shakin' Hullaballoo dancers.

She's About a Mover - Sir Douglas Quintet
I Can't Turn You Loose - Otis Redding
Hip-Hug Her, Time Is Tight - Booker T & The MGs
Jenny Take a Ride - Mitch Ryder
Shake a Tail Feather - 5 Du Tones
Stevie Wonder - I Was Made To Love Her
Supremes - Love Is Like an Itching In My Heart
Dancing In the Streets, Cool Jerk, The In Crowd...

any obscure suggestions? soundtracks, etc...

chaki, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Action "Shadows & Reflections", The Smoke "High in Room", Brigitte Bardot "Contact", Electric Prunes "Everybody Knows You're Not In Love", spring immediately to mind.

The ? and the Mysterians song I'd recommend is "Girl". You've gotta hear it to believe it... starts off kind of sinister with fuzztone guitar and farfisa, then it explodes in the chorus: "Girl... you fascinate me!" But a couple times you swear you hear him say "you masturbate me!!! When asked about this, ? shrugged it off, saying "oh, that's just the Mexican pronunciation."

Arthur, please back me up on this.

Sean, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, after seeing ? and the Mysterians a couple times, it's fairly clear no girl was masturbating or doing much else to him; he's obviously a flaming queen. He's also a goddam genius. The band has all original members, and if you get the chance you'd better see them. They rock, and ? is a true star.

Sean-You have shamed, me, you have shamed me terribly--I don't know the song! And I used to own the album, it was a gift from this company I rated records for when I was 10 or 11. They'd send me really shitty white label albums and I'd fill out the forms and mail them back in. After a few months of negative feedback they terminated my record reviewing stint and sent me the ? album. I thought it was stupid and wrote all over it, drawing clown faces on all the guys, with little cartoon bubbles saying things like "I love my horsey." How could I have been such a fool! Why didn't I save it?

I'd love to see them live, everyone tells me they're incredible.

Arthur, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is it called "girl, you captavate me" rather than just "girl" ?? if it is, then i just downloaded it and its perfect!

The John Barry soundtrack for Beat Girl has lots of twangy guitars and 60s go go beats, although I think it was written in '59. Also, "I'm So Young" by Lynn Redgrave from Smashing Time.

Then there's "Low Grades and High Fever" by Linda Laine and the Sinners, "The Jet Set" by The Jet Set, and some Lulu songs like "Love Loves to Love", "Boy", or "The Boat That I Row". And Marcello mentioned a song called "I Want You to Be My Baby" on a Move thread a while ago. It's great, but I can't remember the name of the singer. Found it on Audiogalaxy, though.

Busy Body -The Jolly Green Giants, vol. 1, track 2 on Teenage Shutdown

Curt, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I FOUND A GOOD ONE ITS CALLED TALK TALK BY THE MUSIC MACHINE I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND IT!

chaki, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh fuckin' hell Chaki that song "Talk Talk" is such genius - what a gloriously annoying voice! I need to check out some of these other tunes.

Clarke B., Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll Keep On Holding On - The Action
Theme from The Party - Henry Mancini
...plus, at some point in the proceedings : Georgy Girl - The Seekers

Jez, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

aha, Mancini's Party theme tune is pretty groovy stuff, although if it's groovy sitar rather than a twangy guitar you want, have you included Dave Pike's Mathar?

Braces Tower, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...or Brigitte Bardot's Harley Davidson? Apparently, that song is officially regarded as Gainsbourg's worst song...I think it's a bloody corker!

Jez, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kim Fowley-Animal Man
Troggs-I Can't Control Myself
Steppenwolf-Sookie Sookie
Not too twangy, but they'd fit in with the stuff you've like so far, I think.

John Peel sometimes plays a very strange record from the early Sixties called "the Great Namedropper" by the Legion of Superheroes. The record has all the qualities of a normal go go record : a great beat, twangy guitars and female backing singers. However over the top of the music an announcer names lots of pop acts of the day (such as Boy Bennett and His Rockets, Rosie and the Originals and Butch and the Bells). People in the studio shout and clap whenever they hear a bandname that they like. It's a brilliant record. I don't know if it's available on any compilations though.
