Current glut of Laptop/mp3 "DJ's" - Why do we put up with such talentless buffoons?

Recently reading this blog entry, I got all heated over the kids steeped in irony and camp hijinx taking over the club scene with their trendy posse's whilst playing a set of tunes entirely off of a laptop. Sure, I'm jaded and come from a time when vinyl was the only accepted source, however, I feel that in this age, it's too easy for schmoes who shouldn't be anywhere near a sound system to gain undeserved fame. How do some of the younger (18-24) posters here feel about this?

PS - read the link before replying - it all makes sense!

"You really have to possess a young, absorbant mind to be romantically blown off your feet by every new genre derivation -- not too mention being simultaneously repulsed and secretly thrilled by the trendwatching fashionistas invading/hyping the scene. Guess what, the very young aren't very appreciative of being told their scene is dead. If it's dead to you, that doesn't mean it's dead, but it no longer matters what you think." - Ian Christe, 9 March 2004

Rikard Fortworth, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

Ban paul edward wagemann

JW, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

that blog post was a really really really longwinded way to say "he had sound problems," eh?

lfam, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

haha...no, not really. I was hit with the whole spectacle of him running in and hitting the spacebar and also the fact that he was reaching behind him and shaking hands with the crowd without looking at them. Mind you, it probably says as much about the fanboys of such scenes as it does knobheads like Girltalk.

Rikard Fortworth, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, have you heard of the Arcade Fire?

JW, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

The Reverend, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

Why are we talking about Girl Talk when we could make fun of Canada?

JW, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

that was also the worst blog entry ever, fuck off you stupid blog reposting nerd

FUCK OFF

JW, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

JW, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

The part I love best about that is the corner headline about the Schiavo legacy.

The Reverend, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:50 (nineteen years ago)

why did ILMers like girltalk? i sat through 10 minutes of that shit waiting for something more than a new indie rock song every 5 seconds over Luda verses or whatever.

artdamages, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

"that was also the worst blog entry ever, fuck off you stupid blog reposting nerd

FUCK OFF" - JW

oh, of course JW. I'll listen to you and your rhetoric. You're a great guy, aren't you.

If you don't like the post, there are plenty of others here for you top spit your vitriol towards.

Rikard Fortworth, Thursday, 8 March 2007 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

why did ILMers like girltalk?

Those who don't like him mostly seem to talk about it on a conceptual level, but I could give a fuck about that. All I care about is that its one of the more purely enjoyable records I've ever heard.

(I must say, though, that I come from a standpoint of unfamiliarity with most of the indie references, so they're just music to me, as opposed to "OMG! THAT SONG!".)

Good job, JW, on perfect crosspost.

The Reverend, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

i hate canada on a conceptual level, too

artdamages, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

girltalk deserves scorn on every possible level i can imagine.

good concept, poor execution

artdamages, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

Google image search turns up no burning Canadian flags. Google image search deserves scorn on every possible level.

The Reverend, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

I don't see why people get bent out of shape about girltalk. Like anyone will care in 4 years?

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

i dont care i just want the 10 minutes of my life back

artdamages, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

artdamages otm

deej, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

I like the execution better than the concept though. (wrt to Girl Talk, not Canadian Bacon. Spot on about that one.)

The Reverend, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

it's not Girltalk i have a beef with, it's the overnight DJ's who love the whole 80's irony/mashup/dressing in tennis gear scenario. Having said that, what's fun for me is probably root canal work to them.

Rikard Fortworth, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

I want the 10 minutes it took us to reach this common ground back.

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

There is a widely recognized codicil that any such ulterior-motive invocation of Godwin's Law will be unsuccessful (this is sometimes referred to as "Quirk's Exception".)

The Reverend, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

Forgive me, for I am a noob here, but I just wanted to establish if in fact JW, you are a "personality" in here (eg. Pancake Repairman on the slsk forums), who is here ALL the time and has a sarky opinion on most posts?

As I'm sure you'll agree, boundaries must be established, and royalty respected - right?

Rikard Fortworth, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

link to wikipedia: Godwin's Law, etc.

The Reverend, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

Please tell me about this pancake repairman!

The Reverend, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:29 (nineteen years ago)

No, JW just quit smoking so he's crankier than usual, even if he's 100% OTM. Also, he got fat sonned in a noize board beef with a non-coder or something.

All I want to know is if there is going to be some "true school" movement with vinyl DJs who punch people who use the phrase "mash-up," and talk about "blends" in a few years. I sure hope so, because I have a lot of late-90s turntablism stuff to unload.

mh, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

jw isn't royalty, he's just the dictator of brooklyn

lfam, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

Where's that "gentrify brooklyn / neu! 2" image?

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

"JW - just found this:

"Pancake Repairman a.k.a. FlapJack (a licensed Pancake repairman and FlapJack expert) has been known to make absurd music lists that no one really cares about. He has also been known to insult your musical taste which is always humorous since his taste is the opposite of impeccable. A fan of Juliana Hatfield. Overall ok guy. And a Pancake Pro"

here's an example of his shining wit:
[BitterHeart] I just want to see pancake make a list, its like being blessed by the hands of a legend himself.... Its like meeting with buddha or something
[BrokeAccount] What if Pancake IS Buddha?
[BrokeAccount] I've had my suspicions for some time, I must say.
[Pancake_Repairman] broke, why did u browse me?
[BitterHeart] if pancake is buddha we are all entirely fucked
[Pancake_Repairman] try downloading kim's chords from me so i can ban u plz, n00b
