Revive!
For two reasons.
1. i am hugely hugely disappointed by Sensuous. He's made absolutely no progress from Point and dammit he should've done.
2. i'm still really excited about seeing him tonight in the London! last time i saw him i was absolutely dumbfounded.
Ok, three reasons.
3. anyone need a ticket? i find myself with a spare. face value, natch.
― CharlieNo4, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)
Saw him at ATP, and he was great, although not as good as when I saw him in Bristol without about 20 other people 10 years ago, which nearly melted my face off. Selling some very nice t-shirts as well.
― Neil S, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)
so anyway. hope he plays lots of fantasma and point and just ignores the new one. except he won't, he'll do precisely the reverse and probably change my mind about it completely in the process...
― CharlieNo4, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)
The new one will be good live I think.
― everything, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)
the live show was amaaaaazing
almost too much so

how do you expect someone who is basically working on just exploring formal qualities to move forward?
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)
the only things i remember him playing off fantasma were "count five or six" and "star fruit." everything else was split pretty evenly between sensuous and point.
― strongohulkington, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)
Exactly this; what were people expecting, some kind of vast improvement in songwriting?
― Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)
I agree that in relation to Point there's no "progress". That does nothing to reduce my love for it. Easily one of the best albums I've heard in quite a while.
― Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)
I also disagree that Cornelius' music is simply interstitial sound collages or something. There is that aspect but they are also beautifully arranged songs (for the most part).
― Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)
I was there last night at the Koko show, and it had all the things I love about Cornelius live - astounding visuals, fabulous sound, talented band, fun with theremin etc. Prior to the gig I said to a friend who doesn't have the album that i wanted the gig to bring Sensuous to life, as i hadn't really fallen in love with the album, and it more or less succeeded. Those synths are so deep!
I loved the demure-looking drummer, too.

exactly. i wanted to be convinced that he hadn't just rehashed Point - and actually he failed to do that. it was still a great show, and there were various moments when i allowed myself to think "fuck me, this is what it's all about" (not least the point during "count five or six" when i got a text off a mate asking if i was at Editors - i absolutely pissed myself laughing), but if you listen to Fantasma and then point, and then point and then sensuous, i think it's completely obvious that he's in, shall we charitably say, a period of consolidation.
also, 25 quid for a t-shirt? come on. luckily, there was an alternative...
― CharlieNo4, Thursday, 24 May 2007 09:46 (eighteen years ago)
That must have been the import version. Mine was $15.
― Spencer Chow, Thursday, 24 May 2007 11:04 (eighteen years ago)
yes well admittedly i bought one of the £10 cheapies that weren't being displayed, but that the nice merch lady spirited up from behind the counter when i baulked at the price of the on-display stuff. fleecing much?
― CharlieNo4, Thursday, 24 May 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)
I can't find the thread where I was previously commenting on this, for some reason.
I just listened to it again, very loud, and I don't understand why I didn't like it before. "Beep It" could go on forever and I'd be ok with it, and I love the way it sets up and then shifts into "Like a Rolling Stone".

This is slowly grabbing me. "Music" is probably my current favourite.

"Fantasma" got remastered last year! Sold out but there's the internet and it sounds AMAZING! Bonus disc is a must have.
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 20 August 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)
Cornelius is still mad underrated IMO
― Lophar Andreusz DeLeone (admrl), Saturday, 20 August 2011 20:03 (fourteen years ago)
Beach Boys sampledelic electronic pop that proved to be 10 years ahead of it's time.
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 20 August 2011 21:49 (fourteen years ago)
Take almost every retro fetish in modern indie: the Beach Boys, death metal, shoegaze, garage rock, krautrock, it's all here.
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 20 August 2011 21:52 (fourteen years ago)
I just picked up the remaster!! It seems to be missing "Typewriter Lesson" but otherwise many of these tracks are super hard to find. Can't tell you how hard I search for "Ball in - Kick off" a couple years ago.
― frogbs, Saturday, 20 August 2011 21:59 (fourteen years ago)
It's like the guy fell off the face of the earth. I check his website every so often, never see anything new.
― suspecterrain, Sunday, 21 August 2011 08:37 (fourteen years ago)
Sensuous isn't all that close to Point. Much more minimal, laid-back.
― lol sickmouthy (Scik Mouthy), Sunday, 21 August 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)
The website stays up to date but it's all Japanese.
He's been touring with the Plastic Ono Band and still doing a zillion remixes. Also I think YMO reformed and he has been playing with them. And doing music for various art shows/promotions/commercials.
Supposedly he's working on a new album!
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 21 August 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)
Website goes english, too — nothing new i've seen there in 3-4 years. Gotta go for the money — i guess — from whence does word come of something new?

otm & should probably also be ref'd on the headphones thread, dude's stuff sounds sweeeet

oh wait, this does have "Typewriter Lesson" on it
the bonus material here is really worth getting. nothing too surprising but if you're a fan of the album it's most definitely valuable.
I remember seeing him on the Sensuous tour about 4 years ago. He used to be super prolific - can't believe Point is a decade old now!
― frogbs, Monday, 22 August 2011 21:04 (fourteen years ago)
god DAMN Point is overpriced on vinyl, shoulda bought it for ten bucks when I had the chance.
― sleeve, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 00:31 (fourteen years ago)
Amazing album. I want a surround sound mix so bad.
Live show was great too. Amazing seeing/hearing those drums live.

Oyamada wore what looked like the world's first T-shirt mash-up: a Neu! shirt sewed into a Trouble Funk shirt.
this is still like the best t-shirt i've ever seen.

when I saw him in Chicago the visual part of it was incredible. seriously, the videos are like half the experience and some of them are permanently etched in my mind with the songs. also, the band was ridiculously tight. I'm happy that he's working with YMO and starting a family or whatever but I want Cornelius back! This remaster gave me another chance to listen to Fantasma again and I had forgotten how cool and unique a listening experience it is.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:05 (fourteen years ago)

His myspace has an official Fantasma promotional video that looks like about 4 or 5 of the songs with video collages. I'm 100% sure they are the same things he projected back when he was promoting that album, so it's extra cool to watch, say "Count 5 or 6" and see clips of Keith Moon and Michael Jackson mixed in with anime and Japanese tv shows.
