"The Third Hand blatantly draws its inspiration from '60s psychedelic rock, '70s funk and '90s indie pop, and, like each of these genres, is monotonous and boring."

From the Duke Chronicle. I realize that the standard for music journalism in college newspapers isn't particularly high, but jesus.

the end of the review:

Life would have been better for everyone if Rjd2 had just stuck to the sound he had mastered and kept making layered, complex, interesting hip-hop albums. And though many ignorant people will admire his efforts and originality, as well as his bravery and weirdness, the fact remains that the album just isn't any good. Rjd2 gets an 'A' for effort, but as we all know, sometimes effort just isn't enough.

Whoa, way to be dismissive duder.

(basically this is just a thread for me to:

A. thank god that ILX saved me from a life of obnoxious music snobbery
B. ask whether The Third Hand is really as bad as all the reviews are making it out to be (indiedelic funk-pop doesn't sound half-bad to me!)
C. gloat about NC State's first-round ACC tournament victory over Duke. FUCK YEAH, GO PACK! BRANDON COSTNER SHOULD CHANGE HIS NAME TO KEVIN, BECAUSE HE'S THE MOTHERFUCKING POSTMAN!!!)

bernard snowy, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

dead wrong about 60s psych & 70s funk but that doesnt have anything to do with the fact that this rj album is the worst of all time

and what, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

i bet his goony lookin ass was devastated when the OC got cancelled right after he finished this bullshit

and what, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

i wanted to like this album for some reason. i put it on and at first it sounds kinda neat and then it just keeps going and going and dude can't sing and his idea of "pop" is indierock with no hooks and it sounds really similar to a ton of other one-man projects by indie-hoppers and rockers who make with the diy emo brian wilson fatty sandbox vibe and soooooo few of them get it right.

scott seward, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

i got thru most of it though which is more than i can say for that aesop rock nike thing i got.

scott seward, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

Yuck, who the hell would want to listen to Aesop Rock's yapping while running? That would just make me tense.

Hurting 2, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

he has the taint of ric ocasek so we can just write off the rest of his career forever

artdamages, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

And this is why I'm glad they didn't have the Internet in my college newspaper days.

mike a, Friday, 9 March 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

Album is actually pretty OK--and much better than the Aesop running thing which has literally no rapping on it and is kind of a ripoff. New Rj's not as good as Boom Bip, but not like " JUX0RS SUX0RS" either.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

more like The Turd Hand.

See, where Rjd2's other albums just kind of played right past me, this one sticks. Especially "Have Mercy," the way it keeps hitting at an unresolved chord for most of the chorus and then comes around for a resolve at the end before going back into the verse. Indie bands aren't smart enough to write that shit.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 10 March 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

lol, i think you missed the point somehow am0n, but keep on keepin' on

Matos W.K., Monday, 12 March 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

doesn't it trick you during the first couple minutes into thinking it might actually be good? it tricked me. and its all downhill after that.

scott seward, Monday, 12 March 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)
