I love them, think they improve every song I've heard that features 'em, and they make Peter Frampton listenable for TWO WHOLE MINUTES.
But I'm surprised how few songs feature them. Is that because (unlike, say, a wah pedal) they're tainted by "novelty" status, or is the spectre of appearing influenced by Pete too big a cross to bear?
